Hello, I just wanted to pop in and tell you that i‘ve returned to my tumblr since forever to find you again because i love Bearskin so much! It‘s the closest thing I‘ve heard of to a modern fairy tale on here and i hope that you‘re still working on it and that i‘ll get to read it one day because it‘s premise sounds so whimsical! Anyways, i hope you‘re doing well! Sending you all the best wishes! 🎐
I've been dealing with a lot in my personal life and at work lately, and I can't express how much it means to me to get a message like this -- thank you so much!! I'm so, so happy that Bearskin is memorable for you, and I hope to be posting about my work on the full version of draft 3 in the coming months! (Everything is just Weird right now.)
I've got the barest bones of it down and I'm hoping that giving myself time between drafts (it's been almost 4 years? yeesh) will help me bring forth the strongest version of it yet! I'm excited to delve back into Irina's headspace and once more explore whatever tf is up with the Prince of Always Night. Watch this (metaphorical) spot!

I think another trend I've seen recently is the lack of Real Problems. The main characters face a threat from an encrouching overlord - but one of them is the most Magical Person Ever from page 1 and can just turn the guy into an ant. The love interests have an argument that may endanger their relationship - but nope, by the next chapter they've made up and the fight wasn't that big of a deal.
Conflict, both external and internet, is the guiding force behind plot, but I do understand why it can be lacking. It can be really hard to put your characters into a Situation and to keep making that Situation Even Worse, but it's also the only way to really earn a satisfying conclusion.
This doesn't mean every story has to be bombastic or over the top. Quiet, character-driven stories still have conflict within them (MC gets fired, breaks up with his boyfriend, avoids honest conversation with their mom, etc) that drives the story into a deeper understanding of that character and why they are the way they are.
If your character can solve their problems from the start, you need to either take that ability away or create a Situation preventing them from doing so. Without that, your worldbuilding feels flat, your plot meanders, and your characters come off as tropes and not relatable beings.

immortality as theft (you have to steal life from something else) immortality as parasitism (there is something else inside You that is keeping you alive and you become less of yourself more and more the longer it stays in you) immortality as violence (everything is trying to kill you because everything is supposed to die and the universe will always try to find a way to right the wrong that is You) you understand

the infuriating thing is that there is genuinely so much good queer literature out there, contemporary and not, but there is also a sizeable chunk of readers who think that a book only "counts" as good queer literature if it's a) unproblematic, b) contains romance as its central focus, and c) has the characters state their orientation and/or gender identity directly to the audience using socially acceptable 21st-century terms (as opposed to resorting to cowardly tactics such as Subtext and Themes)

people who attempt to distance autism from the less socially acceptable traits think they’re destigmatising autism when what they’re actually doing is pinning all inconveniences back on individual autistic people. which funnily enough is what I would call Bad and Unhelpful

when i was at walgreens (at 3 in the morning which explains all of this) the cashier was talking to her coworker about how shed rather be a werewolf than a vampire because vampires are condemned to hell but werewolves arent and then she asked me what i thought and i said vampire because im already condemned to hell and she said in the nicest tone of voice “i dont think anybody is condemned to hell….” paused, stared at me for a few moments, and added on “…not even gay people”

hate when people think the only archetype possible for a male sidekick to a female protagonist is a soft boi and/or himbo. like the implication there is that the only reason a man would ever defer to a woman’s authority is if he was a bumbling idiot. love male supporting characters who are smart and strong and confident and can step up when necessary but still kind and humble enough to let someone else take the lead most of the time

i walk a fine line between “i’m asexual and i hate how much the world revolves around sex” and “sex is way too stigmatized and people should be able to be more open about it if they want to”

'I asked chat GPT-'
oh did you? You asked something that steals shit to lie to you about a subject? And you just tell me this like I care to know what it said? Like I wanted to know its opinion? I regularly ask my cat Cheesey Gordita Crunch about many subjects and I think I trust his judgement more than whatever bullshit ur shitty algorithm spat out

People should be having fun making genre films. They should be having the time of their lives. They should be so into it and they should talk fondly about their time working on it. Superhero movies started going awry when everyone stopped having fun and started talking about Stepping Into the Legacy
