The Sunset Plume Affair

So @gogglemeister-rinni sent me THIS prompt and as I tried to decide what kind of Boss Battle Zee would be, I realized he wasn’t just one battle. There was an entire story building in my head as to what would happen and how it would play out. I started writing and working it out in my head, and before I knew it, idk, a week or two had passed?

So without further ado, I present the fruits of my weeklong efforts; The Sunset Plume Affair project.

The project/fanfic/etc is meant to be read as a Alexander/Omega/etc style Raid tier, set sometime after the events of Stormblood but before the Omega arc begins, and serves as something of a ‘what if’ story. It’s meant to be read Story section > Raid Breakdown and I’ll post it as such.

Please feel free to throw any feedback you have my way and of course none of this is canonical in any way, nor do I expect or want people to treat it as such. I’m very proud of this, and exhausted after spending so long on it, but I’m still really happy with where it all ended up.

There is a slight smile on Ezekiel’s lips, thin and quaint.

“I only know him by reputation alone, but his reputation is of a very gruff man with a liking for the finery things and heavy armor. It makes it hard to read such a man, doesn’t it? Perhaps he has a reason for this secretive behavior, but I do not know or care much to know it.”

“A man is entitled to his privacy, after all! It would make examinations much more difficult, but then I am nothing if not adaptive to the nature of the work in front of me...”

Louisoix: What is the greatest sacrifice my character has made? / Estinien: Is my character the type to take matters into their own hands?

There is a slight frown to Ezekiel’s lips as he looks towards his hands, fingers rubbing against each other a little as he then clenches his fist. “I do not think I can quantify sacrifice in some unit of measure that would work to actually answer your question, but what I personally consider my greatest sacrifice was my leaving of Gyr Abania.”

“I had waited too long, and I could take so very little with me. My family was already lost to any faith they could escape and would not listen to reason. It tore me apart to abandon my life and research there, but it had to be done.”

Yet the frown has faded as he looks back to the speaker. “Of course, such a sacrifice has become only a footnote in my recent successes. I have come to a wonderful place, built a business I am quite proud of and have many associates now whom I would not have met if I had not come to Ul’dah and started a new life here. Nevermind the fascinating things I have come to find and discover here. I cannot say I do not miss my family, or what I once had, but I endeavor to not let it stop me. I let it instead drive me to make such a sacrifice well worth it.”

Though the next question has him straightening himself, brushing his hands clean of whatever he had been smudging between his fingers.

“I suppose that would depend on what you mean by such a question? I of course lead and control the direction of my research and the way my organization runs itself, though I leave much of the day-to-day affairs to my assistant and confident Zhera...but I am out of principle opposed to the more hostile connotations of that statement.”

There is a pleasant, if somewhat creased smile on his lips and he lets his eyes relax, looking at the speaker a bit earnestly. “The more brutish and crude implications are opposed to my core values, and I would prefer to let the proper authorities or rightful parties deal with any situation in which I might feel the urge to take matters into my own hands.”

“As an aside I am, by admission here, horribly unsuited to violence and the rigors of combat, so it would make more sense for me to allow others to handle the affair instead of myself. I do not much care for bloodshed.”

“Of course. Ethics and morality, as a practitioner of the medical arts, are of the utmost importance to me. The trust of others is how I earn my trade, and if Twelve forbid it was known I ever engaged in any activities that are unsavory, I would lose a great deal.”

His glasses are removed now with a pleasant smile as he begins rubbing a soft cloth against their lenses, looking downward at that. “Yet I am a man of science, as well, and what man driven to better the lives of others would allow anything to stand in his way? Of course, a man of less savory character would remove such obstacles, by whatever means necessary, sparing nothing and none who might impede his progress.”

“Such individuals might rationalize that their cause is so just, their work so important, it is worth sacrificing anything and everything to complete it. That their own personal gains justify secrecy, criminal behavior, illegal and illicit experiments, record forgery, physical and mental alterations, abduction, bribery, blackmail or perhaps even cold-hearted murder...”

There is a level to his voice that is unshaken throughout his words, lifting his glasses up to wipe at a particularly ingrained spot. Satisfaction moves over his lips as he pushes the glasses back over his nose with a small adjusting motion of his thumb.

“It breaks my heart that some might think this way. I, myself, consider accountability and open disclosure of the utmost importance to the community. Progress is, of course, nothing if it is not accepted by those it would benefit.”

Charmingly he smiles now as he clasps his hands in front of his stomach someway, elbows slightly bent.

“Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have important matters to attend to.”

“Another honest looking person,” he tapped his chin as he examined their profile. “I mean, there’s nothing wrong with honesty, of course. But in my world it’s difficult to get by on honesty alone, if that makes sense?” He canted his head slightly, “Healers and medicine makes tend to be the most trouble because of how they can be honest to a fault. Trusting. Maybe too much. But they can also be quick to turn too,” the Seeker frowned slightly, his ears pinned back, “I fear they could be the first to jump to poisons. They have the knowledge to do it… But an innocent refugee… Well, I hope he maintains his innocence.”

Case Study #M434-T\ULH

Subject is a hyur male of Ul’dahn descent, approximately sixty five years s of age. Moderate health, arthritis and occupational health markers for deep mining noted and discarded as relevant to study. Subject presented with chronic coughing fits and hemoptysis was observed along with shortness of breath and chest pains.

After careful examination of the patient’s chest and throat along with fluid samples the complete diagnosis is a thickening and scarring of the lungs due to long-term exposure to coal and mineral dusts during time mining. Prescriptions will include cough suppressants and weekly steam treatments using Compound SD-92A. 

At time of diagnosis there is no effective cure for this condition, treatments will focus on management of symptoms and quality of life. Examination has revealed tissue thickening in fourty-five percent the subject’s left lung and twenty percent thickening of the right lung. Subject is at high risk for heart-lung related conditions and will be monitored.

Compound SD-92A is derived from fragmented logs of medical formulae recovered from the latest shipment of tomestones and suggests possible cellular reversion and regeneration. Doses in weekly treatment are to be increased by one mL per treatment.

Week One; Subject shows intriguing signs of increased mental acuity and recollection following initial treatment. Cough is less painful and frequent but within parameters of primary treatment.

Week Two; No progress or improvement observed. Subject has begun to show eagerness to the treatments, possible narcotic qualities to the compound?

Week Three; Increase of dosage from previous week has increased the narcotic effects. Subject is now asking for bi-weekly treatments and insists that they are helping. Mental effects of the compound have plateaued. Suspect increase is restoration of acuity from age, not true increase.

Week Four, First Treatment; At subject’s urging began double treatments. No documented changes, but subject has shown fewer symptoms and reduced pain. Week Four, Second Treatment; Subject’s addiction to the treatment is becoming problematic. Attempted to wrest bottle of compound from hands during treatment. Upon refusal to continue treatment Subject attempted to take compound by force. 

Zhera subdued the subject and he was escorted out of the clinic. Subject has not been seen since despite assurances from security staff they released him outside the front gate.

Private Addendum; During post-mortem examination of subject tissue recovery was noted in both lungs. Final infiltration of left lung is documented as thirty-seven percent and right lung was documented at thirteen percent. Further examination reveals regression of age markers and recent re-development of brain tissue. No restoration of tissue for the heart or other vital organs is noted suggesting effects are limited in scope or nature, or dosage was insufficient to restore more faculties. Further experiments will be required.

These results show promise to the application of the chimeratic tissue research developed from the recent tomestones. While regenerative properties would normally preclude commercial applications, narcotic effects coupled with much smaller doses show promise as a profit venture.
