Rhinoceros Ratsnake
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Rhinoceros Ratsnake, also commonly known as the Vietnamese longnose snake, is a species of non-venomous ratsnake in the family Colubridae. The species is found from northern Vietnam to southern China. It has a prominent, distinctive, scaled protrusion on the front of its snout, which has led to its common naming after a rhinoceros.

Tahiti 1959

From “Hina, la petite tahitienne”, 1959. https://www.instagram.com/p/CL7ZjpfAYsQ/?igshid=1dz8oot1efkps

Leopard Gecko
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Leopard Gecko (Eublepharis macularius)
Leopard geckos have a small “bark” they use if agitated
Unlike most other gecko species, the leopard gecko has eyelids. They can even blink and close their eyes while sleeping
Like many lizards, the leopard gecko has a tail that can come off if grabbed by a predator. Giving them time to escape
Leopard geckos are nocturnal, keeping out of the heat of the day, emerging at night from holes and crevices to hunt for food
A leopard gecko’s sex is determined by incubation temperature. At 90° F, virtually all the eggs are male; near 80° F, most of the eggs will be female. An incubation temperature of 85° F will produce about an equal number of males and females
Leopard gecko tails are used as a fat storage in case of food shortages
When hunting, mating, and defending territory leopard geckos shake there tails
The Latin genus/species name of leopard gecko is, Eublepharis macularius, meaning well-made eyelid and spotted
Unlike most other geckos leopards have little claws instead of sticky pads
With eyesight comparable to a cat’s, geckos can see better than any other lizard whose vision has been studied

Merten’s Coral Snake
Tumblr media
(Micrurus mertensi) Merten’s coral snake, Chaquira, coral, coral del desierto, coralillo
Habitat
Mainly found in tropical deciduous forest, dry tropical forest, thorn-scrub & desert; most commonly found near streams. Occurs from near sea level to 1,600 m elevation. Limited to semi-arid coastal regions of southern Ecuador through most of western Peru.
Activity and Behavior
Not much known. Probably mainly nocturnal (or crepuscular) & terrestrial (also probably burrows in loose soil or forest floor litter). Most species of coral snakes are usually not aggressive, but some will bite readily if restrained or molested.
