“Look into my mind?” Layla was confused by the verbiage. Sure, the entire scenario was bizarre to begin with. Who was this woman, and what did she want? A pickpocket, perhaps? She placed her hands in her pockets casually just to be safe, just a slight gesture that hopefully wouldn’t cause any alarm.
There was a sincerity in the woman’s eyes, a strong urgency that cause Layla to feel more inclined to believe her, rather than not. “How do you mean?” She asked, trying to gain a better feel for what was going on. If the redhead was in some kind of trouble, then of course she would help her. “What’s going on?

Jean nodded. “I’m a telepath,” she explained. “I can access your memories, see what you saw. It won’t hurt,” Jean assured her carefully. She knew how people tended to react, to people with powers. Especially mutants. The world wasn’t always so friendly - in fact, it rarely was. But she had never let that hold her back, and wouldn’t now, staring into the woman’s eyes, trying to make a connection with her. Not a psychic one, just a human one.
I’m a friend, Jean thought. You can trust me. “I’m -” Marvel Girl. But that name didn’t feel right, not the way it had used to. “My name is Jean.” she said instead, smiling encouragingly. “My friends and I, we’re looking for someone who came through here. Someone who ... has powers like we do, but uses them to hurt people. Who’s going to try to hurt people, today. I’m going to stop them, with your help.” Jean spoke calmly, but there was something hard and cold lurking underneath. She heard it in her own words, recognized it with a sharp sense of unease. The Phoenix had had a retributive sense of justice. If it was still there, if she still felt angry... then maybe all along that anger had just been hers.

She had sensed a disturbance all the way from inside the school, the usual low level hum of the minds of the students heightening enough that Jean felt she had to investigate. It was a relief to see the portal opening and the blonde figure step out. Or more like, fall out. Jean approached cautiously - Illyana’s shields were strong enough that it was impossible to so much as probe her mind to check her identity, but few people were so capable of creating portals, especially portals right into the heart of the school. It must truly be her, Jean thought, heartened by the sight. “It surely can’t be worse than Limbo,” Jean said, caught a little off-guard by Illyana’s first words, but amused all the same. She stepped forwards, reaching out one hand to place on Illyana’s shoulders, her smile warm. “Welcome home.”

Illyana really had to get better at not opening her quick getaway portals ten feet in the air on the other side. In her defense it was a little hard to get an exact location for the exit portal when she had to do it in less than a second while running from demons. Still it was something she should probably work on she thought as she got up from the ground. Falling from a portal ten feet in the air was less than pleasant. She checked her phone, barely getting a glimpse of the date, seeing that it’d been three months since she left for Limbo, before the phone died, yet another ruined phone. She sighed as she exited the alley she’d ended up in, wincing slightly at the sun “fuck that’s bright” she cursed as she shielded her eyes with one of her hands.

Jean reached out a hand, placed it on the other’s shoulder gently. She weighed up her words before speaking, though there was a sense of underlying urgency that made her want to push harder. “I understand what I’m asking. It’s a lot, and you can say no... but I promise, if you let me look into your mind, I won’t go further than you want me to. My team and I, we’re looking for someone ... someone dangerous. And you might have been the last person to see them. It would help but ...” Jean shrugged, her neutral expression composed. It was hard not to be affected by old memories, of pushing her way into minds, doing whatever she wanted, the power of the Phoenix urging her on, always more, more, more, always hungry. She was different now. She was going to be different. “It’s up to you,” she finished.

The red of Scott’s glasses prevented her from making out his expression. Once, it wouldn’t have mattered. Once, Jean had always been able to tell what he was thinking, even before they’d had a psychic link. They’d never actually needed it. One look had been enough, a perfect team, on and off the field. Not anymore, clearly, if her performance in today’s mission was anything to go by. She’d just been off, a little bit behind every move the team had made, a little too slow to follow every instruction, throwing everyone off balance. “So,” Jean broke the silence eventually, looking up at him and then away again. “That didn’t go well. Maybe I’m not ready for-” She stopped. There was nothing Jean felt particularly ready for: not being alive again, not pretending everything was fine and normal, as though she hadn’t gone power mad and killed a lot of people, begged Scott to kill her, and then killed herself. Maybe that was what it came down to, in the end, like it always had for Jean: Scott Summers. Not ready for him. She was definitely not ready for him. “For being on the team again.”

Jean prodded at the minds of the crowd, gently encouraging them to move on, the chaos left in the wake of an X-Men mission having left its mark all over. They did try to be subtle, not draw attention, but it didn’t always work out that way. And there was always an uncomfortable element to mental manipulation, especially now, after everything that had happened, everything she had done, but this, at least, was to save lives. Maybe if she saved enough, there’d be a time, eventually, when the balance would even out, even tip over. More lives saved than destroyed by her. Her mental grip wavered just a little, before she strengthened her hold again. Jean knew, she would have to save a lot of lives before that would be even close to coming true. Afraid she was going to lose the crowd entirely, she scanned her surroundings. Up ahead, she could see Logan and was about call for his help, but - no. The uniform was right, the stance was even right, an almost perfect mimicry, but she knew Logan too well to be fooled.
“You’re not Logan.” Her eyes narrowed, already starting to analyze the defences of his mind. In the past, she could have done both at once, but now Jean felt a wave of frustration with herself as her control over the crowd slipped. “You have ten seconds to tell me who you are before I make you.”

Knocked off her feet in the Danger Room: now it really felt like old times, not least because of the icy presence who’d been fighting next to her. At least now Jean could laugh about it, rueful smile in place. No matter how many years passed, she could still remember that old mortifying feeling of when she’d messed up in front of the others. Maybe only Bobby had understood that - among the five of them, he’d been the youngest, Jean the only woman - they’d both had a lot to prove. She felt the old rush of affection for him, and was glad of it. Ever since she’d come back, everyone around her had felt a little like a stranger, even Bobby, his features older than she remembered them, but  this moment felt so easy, like she really could be the old Jean again, “You know what,” Jean started, smiling as she pulled herself to her feet, “I’m just glad it was you, and not Scott who saw that.”

JEAN GREY / MARVEL GIRL
name  ― jean elaine grey alias  ― phoenix / marvel girl ! age  ― 26 gender  /  pronouns  ― cis woman / she/her faceclaim  ― erin kellyman occupation  ―  teacher affiliation  ― the x-men ! canon― 616 based, the various assortment of comics i have read over the x-men timeline... just don’t ask me to explain it ...
what  was  your  character's  life  like  in  2024 ?
jean was getting used to being restored to life, a state she had swiftly become far too familiar with. her knowledge of death had always been intimate, since she was ten years old and her telepathic powers first developed - while jean was playing on the street with her best friend, annie richardson. a car struck annie down and jean entered another person’s mind for the first time in her life, experienced dying with annie, as annie did. it was intensely traumatizing, but was only the first of many times jean would go on to live through death.
in 2024, she had just returned again from her most recent bout with death, having spent several years as the phoenix in the white hot room, watching over her friends as much as she could. it was difficult to not be able to play a more active role, to only be able to influence them in dreams. jean’s weakness was much the same as it ever had been, from the very first time she had bonded with the phoenix: mostly, it was because she desperately wanted to save the lives of her friends. but also, more selfishly, now, as ever, she wanted to live herself. resurrected by the phoenix force once more, she took control with that old passion for life, wanting things to be different this time, to finally be able to claim her life for herself.
does  your  character  have  any  memories  from  2024  or  their  past  ?
not much. truthfully, jean’s consciousness is so used to being fragmented, split apart: parts of her with the phoenix force, parts of her with herself, in the white hot room, in the dreams and souls of her friends, spread across the universe in so many different aspects ... that by now, her mind is used to compartmentalizing. her memories are largely gone, particularly as she’s very much concentrated on what’s happening to her now.
what  are  they  doing  in  the  year  2012  ?
things aren’t so different: jean is newly returned to life. in 2010, she bonded with the phoenix force to save the lives of the x-men. at first, things were fine. then, it got bad. her new powers consumed her, and the force took control. jean hurt people, hurt worlds. she sacrificed her life to try to make things right. she thought that would be the end.
not so much. the force eventually brought her back, and she’s trying to adjust, not sure who she is anymore, not sure if she should be alive. she feels distant from her former self, distant from her loved ones, terrified of the power that might assert itself inside of her again. afraid to even use the codename phoenix, jean has returned to her old codename, MARVEL GIRL, but it feels all wrong, like she’s trying to put on clothes that no longer fit. in truth, she doesn’t know where her place is, and if she really has one at all anymore.
