i think rukia has a natural magnetism + charm that draws people in when she lets them get close and that's why she has people lined up ready to kill slash die for her

wrt rukia's feelings about byakuya i think from the beginning she held a deep admiration for him and looked to him as a role model for the type of shinigami she wanted to be (even more so than kaien who was in her life briefly and became too painful to think about. ) "love, romance... I think that stuff's boring. feelings of attachment, affection, friendship... it's all boring." that doesn't sound like any sort of ideology promoted by kaien or ukitake but that's basically byakuya's MO combined with her own decades of loneliness. it makes sense, though, to me, why she would admire him, abandoned to the tender mercies of inuzuri she managed to survive, but she struggles to adapt to the soul society. while byakuya is powerful, feared, respected, unflappable and i think she wanted that for herself regardless of how he made her feel personally (nervous, unwanted). "my heart is at peace now[...] could it be because my brother turned his back on me when i was confused and shamefully clinging to life." is a bit of insight into their relationship i'm always going back to, his opinion is important to her even when it's in contrast to her own will to live. it's also why he's forgiven completely for his casual (and sometimes deliberate) cruelty towards her, she wants his love, attention, respect and when she gets it we see the normally reserved rukia moved to tears or blushes. the climax of her character arc has nothing to do with ichigo or renji, but byakuya acknowledging her strength. and it's the reason why it's so so so so important that she ends the series as "captain kuchiki"
