Help a Family in Need

I am reaching out on behalf of my dear friend, Mohamad S., who is facing one of the most challenging times of his life. Mohamad is 37 years old and left his homeland in 2015 in search of a safer and better future. He’s a kind, hardworking man, and his small family has always been his greatest priority.

Living abroad, Mohamad has recently endured unimaginable loss and financial strain. Amidst the ongoing conflict in his homeland, his mother passed away, leaving behind his sister and her five young children—the last remaining members of his immediate family.

As the situation worsened, Mohamad managed to help his sister and her children escape to safety in Egypt, covering their immediate needs and securing a temporary refuge for them. Since then, he has been fully responsible for providing everything they need to survive during this transition.

In his efforts to support his family and cope with this devastating loss, Mohamad has found himself deeply in debt. To make matters even more difficult, he recently underwent knee surgery, which limits his ability to return to work for the foreseeable future. This has made it even harder for him to manage his financial responsibilities and the pressing need to provide his family with a stable future.

Mohamad is now working to bring his sister and her five children to join him in Belgium, where he hopes they can find stability and opportunity after all they’ve endured. This transition, however, requires significant resources that he is currently unable to meet alone.

For privacy reasons, we are not sharing Mohamad’s full name, as he has chosen to keep his identity discreet. While he initially refused the idea of asking for help, I couldn’t stand by and watch him struggle alone. I insisted on doing this for him because he deserves a chance to overcome these challenges.

Your contribution will help Mohamad repay the debt incurred during this difficult time, cover ongoing living expenses for his family, and assist with the costs involved in bringing them safely to Belgium.

Mohamad has been a good friend of mine for years, and I’ve always admired his resilience and generosity. Any support, no matter the size, will make an incredible difference in helping Mohamad and his family rebuild their lives after these painful experiences.

Full List of OLOS Chapter 4 Adaptations, References, Explanations and More (Game & Fic Spoilers!)

Warning: This exhaustive list will hold your hand and treat you as someone who remembers next to nothing about the game. There is a focus on explaining writing decisions of events / character actions / story beats and worldbuilding.

Bug stalking and pouncing on the farm is based on one of the game’s adoptable cat’s idle animations.

The flute block is a canon buildable item. 

Emily being a vegetarian is a reference to how any food items involving meat (fish) are listed under her canon Hated and Disliked gifts. 

Reza buying strawberry seeds at Pierre’s booth and poking his head through the bunnyman cutouts are just some Egg Festival things the player can do in-game. 

Alex and Haley are hanging out at the Stardrop Saloon steps, similar to how they can be found close by said building during the event in-game, at least in the odd-numbered years as far as I can recall. 

For reference, Reza is 185 cm (6’1”) tall and Alex is 180 cm (5’11”) in this fic. One of the women Reza talked to pointed out his height because the average Indonesian man — which Reza is coded as — is typically only around 164 cm (5’4.5”) tall. So yes, he is in fact taller than most "southeast Fern Islanders," but the way the question is posed by her is still meant to be weird.

The saying the group of women told Reza about receiving flowers through spring making one’s Flower Dance ceremony more successful is something I adapted from Demetrius’ dialogue during the Flower Dance event, about how the springtime dances are able to be traced back to ancient fertility rituals. Basically they meant to imply that receiving more flowers means having more admirers, which supposedly speaks on an individual’s eligibility and their odds of completing said “fertility rituals” — or to put it more bluntly: how likely someone is to get laid. This flew right over Reza’s head, who did not have that background information. Though to be fair, I don’t think it would be a saying everyone in the fic's universe takes seriously. 

The Stardew Valley region being mostly made up of a white mainlander majority is just a nudge to the way that most Stardew Valley NPCs are indeed white-passing anyways.

Ferngill Republic’s war with the Gotoro Empire is a conflict canon to the worldbuilding of Stardew Valley, as evident from Kent’s entire backstory told through multiple of his dialogues and Heart Events, some Year 1 dialogues from Sam, and referenced in the titles of a couple books in the Museum Library. 

Abigail is the long-reigning champion of the Pelican Town Egg Hunt referencing the fact that whenever the player character does not win the Egg Hunt minigame, Abigail would win it instead.

Just like how the event minigame unfolds; Abigail, Maru, Vincent and Jas are fellow competitors in the Egg Hunt and can be found wandering around Pelican Town alongside the player during the allotted search time. However, I’ve decided to deliberately exclude Sam from the lineup so he can cheer on Abigail with Sebastian. Alex on the other hand does not canonically participate, which is reflected in the fic by his disinterest in the event. Up until Reza’s taunting, that is. 

The locations of the eggs Reza and Alex come across are largely based on the odd-year Egg Hunt event egg locations, though I replaced some and added more to pad out their chase.

Although the required number of eggs to win against Abigail in the single-player mode of the game is 9, I abandoned that entirely for the fic.

The straw hat Abigail received as prize for winning is a canon prize the player would get for winning the Egg Hunt minigame for the first time.  By Reza looking “much like a kitten falling headfirst into its milk bowl,” I meant like this:

OLOS progress update

Hi! Just wanted to give a little update on the fic in case anyone is keeping up here. Drawings for chapter 5 are finished, and the chapter itself is 90% done, but I have some strong dissatisfaction with my writing for this one so I'm going to take my time doing rewrites and edits instead of driving myself crazy I think.

I apologize for how slow this update has been. I got sick again after going out of town for a few nights (I was properly masking, but it happens, lol) and my coughing fits were so frequent and violent it was hard for me to concentrate on most of anything. But I'm getting better! Here's a little sketch preview as a treat.

Probably my favorite Reza I've ever drawn. My son is such a cutie.

I am Nevin Al-Sir, I live in Gaza, I am 27 years old, I used to work as an accountant in an accounting firm, I am married and have a child, I was also pregnant during the war, the war on Gaza, and when the evacuation order came from our area in Gaza, we fled through the corridor that the occupation lied to us about and the safe corridor was a disaster. We walked on foot, the longest distance I have ever walked in my life. I was displaced to a tent with the rest of my family, and it was very difficult, tiring and exhausting. Every time there was an evacuation in the southern areas, I was forced to evacuate again to a worse tent. Then I gave birth to my child in a field hospital because the hospitals were out of service. I gave birth to my son in the winter, the cold and the war together, which did not destroy my house and my tent. Now we live in a tent, me, my mother, my father, my husband, my brothers, my sisters and their children, and I need your support to try to survive.
