Time for Reimiko!

who’s the cuddler: Kumiko. She'll either lean her head on Reina’s shoulder and grasp her arm or hug her fully. Reina always returns the hug and lets a little smile grace her face.

who makes the bed: Either one. They’re both very neat but sometimes Kumiko gets a little groggy in the mornings and forgets so Reina will make the bed while softly chiding her. (“Kumiko, it was your turn to make the bed today.” “Ah! Sorry Reina, I forgot… I’ll make breakfast today!”) 

who wakes up first: Kumiko’s an early riser. She likes to wake up early to make breakfast or surprise Reina with breakfast in bed. Sometimes, she prefers to stay in bed a little longer and just wait for Reina to ‘wake’ her up with kisses. 

who has the weird taste in music: Neither. They both have rather normal tastes in music, mostly listening to songs that can be played by concert bands. Kumiko also listens to the popular pop songs and idol songs sometimes/when classmates tell her about it.

who is more protective: Reina. Though she doesn’t always voice it, she cares a lot for Kumiko and is watching her silently even when Kumiko does little things like putting on her shoes, carrying her euphonium etc. She’s always looking out for Kumiko, for example, Kumiko is putting on her shoes when she slips and falls backwards but Reina is there almost immediately, catching her swiftly and she looks into Kumiko’s eyes and asks, “You okay?” and Kumiko can only nod dumbly because dashing Reina. (I should write a fic for this)

who sings in the shower: Reina. She often does it without realising, humming a soft tune or singing a song. Kumiko likes to hide outside her bathroom and listen but the first time Reina found out, she called her a pervert.

who cries during movies: Kumiko perhaps? Reina doesn't get too emotional about stuff like this. Kumiko gets teary eyed at touching scenes and Reina pats her head while mumbling, “It’s just a movie, I don’t get why you’re so emotional about it, Kumiko.”

who spends the most while out shopping: From episode 8, we see that Reina has quite the fashion sense so she probably tends to spend more money buying clothes than she would like to admit. 

who kisses more roughly: Reina. She’s very passionate about the things that she does so she naturally expresses it and at first Kumiko is a bit taken aback but after a short while, she finds it hot. And they make out a lot

who is more dominate: I'll leave this one up to your imagination. 

my rating of the ship from 1-10: 10. They have so much chemistry it’s overflowing and the way they behave around each other, they just fit each other like pieces in a puzzle and I'll stop here bc I could go on for hours.

KyoAni, the animation is so good and so is the storyline but I will fight you, I WILL FIGHT YOU if Taki-sensei and Reina somehow end up together because it's immoral and illegal. Please, don't even go there. He is twice her age. TWICE her age. (+4 more years)

Hibike! Euphonium: Appreciation

Dear Hibike! Euphonium fans,

Can we take a minute to appreciate how good Hibike! Euphonium is until now? Just ignore the shipping wars and stop hating on KyoAni for queerbaiting, forcing a het-plot or yuri-plot or whatever. Just stop for a moment.

Think about how how stunning the art is with the gorgeous scenaries, how beautiful the music is, how interesting the characters are even the side characters, how incredible the montage is with the magical touch of attention to detail and what an amazing job the voice actors do. 

Just let it sink in for a sec and give KyoAni some credit. For we talk shit about the company only based on fear not on facts. So as long as they don’t ruin their anime, there is no reason to hate. 

OK. Thank you. Now carry on with your lives.

Honestly if reimiko isn't canon, which would really disappoint me, I feel that Kumiko should remain single. Because from my observations as a watcher of the series, no other pairing has struck me with “This ship should sail” besides reimiko.

I am unable to support shuichi/kumiko because even if there was/is chemistry between them, it’s hard for it to resurface. Firstly, has Shuichi apologized for what he said to Kumiko? No. Has he supported her in any way? Not in the anime at least. Has he even shared a conversation with her that actually captures her interest and makes her feel any sort of positive emotion? No. If they had placed hints and moments between them like this, then hey, it would be a reason to ship them. But at the moment, the only reason is that their childhood friends.  

They do not show any sort of chemistry. For reimiko we see serious talk, silly jokes and emotional sharings. That is what constitutes a good relationship, be it romantic or platonic. For shuichi and kumiko, we have one-sided conversations, no regard for the other’s feelings and basically it ends with both parties feeling upset or confused. This is not a healthy relationship, be it platonic or romantic. 

The anime has not put in any effort to show Kumiko having any interest in Shuichi. There’s no blushing, nervousness or interest which are the common signs of having a crush. Asuka shows more romantic interest in her euphonium than kumiko does to shuichi. Thus, if this pairing does become canon, it would disregard the build up of reimiko and force two characters together which is practically throwing the scenes from ep 1 to ep 8 away just to have a poorly developed romance in the form of het ship.

Hibike Euphonium and Queerbaiting

For many Hibike! Euphonium fans, the dominant ship of the series is Kumiko x Reina. There are a smaller amount of people who insist on shipping Kumiko and Shuuichi together, and though they are a minority, I have seen a decent amount of posts complaining about Kumiko/Reina shippers hating Shuuichi for no good reason and general pleas for others to respect all ships, no matter how much they don’t agree. I’m going to go into detail in this post about how that kind of discourse is counterproductive and comes from a place of heterosexual privilege.

What do you think about the hints given in Hibike ep.9, like Kumiko might not realise she's in love with this guy, and Reina enrolled in this school just for Taki sensei? I seriously hope they will close both routes.

I apologize for my rant in advance.

Episode 9 Hibike! Euphonium: 

I think KyoAni are enjoying very much the agony of the different shipping fandoms. The sadists. 

I still believe in Kumiko x Reina 100%. I don’t mind sinking with this ship if KyoAni wants to destroy their incredible anime by forcing some het-plot with Kumiko x Shuuichi or/and Reina x Taki-sensei. Because the interaction between Kumiko and Reina stays the most convincing evidence for that they are in fact the One True Pairing. 

I want to emphasize that I don’t hate Shuuchi or Taki-sensei. I actually really like their characters. I just don’t like a plot that would for 9 whole episodes be used to build a special relationship between Kumiko and Reina, which seems very convincing and makes a lot of sense to be romantic, to be destroyed afterwards. 

To be honest, even with how much my brain tries to reason why KyoAni wouldn’t go through with Kumiko x Reina, I still believe they will be endgame and I will explain that after I answered your question.  

Let’s recap episode 9. 

1) Hazuki says Kumiko isn’t aware of that she likes Shuuichi. 

This might be true since we don’t know what KyoAni is planning, but I don’t find it very convincing. Every episode when we see Kumiko and Shuuichi interact we get a famous “Geh” or “Tss”, a -glance than ignore- look or a “I don’t want to play eupho with you” reaction from Kumiko. Overall, Kumiko seems very indifferent towards Shuuichi. Are people indifferent towards the person they have unconsciously feelings for? More like curious and wanting to be close to them like Kumiko with Reina. 

Furthermore, every time Kumiko is asked if she likes Shuuichi she denies it with everything she can. No, blush or whatever which we saw with Hazuki when Midori said she liked Shuuichi and she tried to deny it. To add, we see Kumiko talk to her cactus saying she and Shuuichi are just childhood friends, nothing more. Talking to her cactus is something she does when she is bothered with something like the misunderstanding with Reina in episode 1. It’s her way of speaking her mind, letting out her inner feelings. So if she says she doesn’t like Shuuichi that way, I believe her.

2) Reina might like Taki-sensei which might be hinted with the whole *Why did Reina go to Kitauji? For Kumiko Taki-sensei* thing. 

I don’t see a reason to think Reina likes Taki-sensei. She does admires and respects him that is as much as we know. She might went to Kitauji for Taki-sensei. OK. So what? I applied for lessons from my music teacher because he is really good. Does that mean I am in love with him? No it doesn’t. 

We know that Reina wants to become special by playing the trumpet. For that goal wanting good music education from a great teacher like Taki-sensei isn’t strange. That could’ve been her reason for going to Kitauji, but that doesn’t imply she is in love with Taki-sensei. So if *going to Kitauji for Taki-sensei* is the only argument for why she would like him, I am not convinced. I would need more prove. Like blushing or a true confession. I will kill myself if this happens, not really but I might cry for months.

3) Kumiko x Reina

So like I said before, in the last 8 episodes were a lot of hints for a blossoming love between Kumiko and Reina. I think episode 9 even added more evidence. 

We first see that Kumiko’s playing improved a lot. And Asuka asks teasingly if something happened. I think Asuka tries to imply something might have happen at the festival. And the way she says it implies, in my opinion, that Asuka indirectly asks Kumiko if something happened with a boy(friend). For which there is a saying that when people are in love their music becomes better. Kumiko was with Reina at the day of the festival. And we all know what happened between them. So this is hinted in the direction that Kumiko’s music is more beautiful because of Reina. 

Later we see the scene Midori says Kumiko is suddenly more “grown up” and Kumiko thinks this is because of Reina. How she was moved by Reina’s speech about wanting to become special an doing everything you can to improve. The fact that Kumiko thinks it’s because of Reina, says a lot. It says that Reina has left a great impression on Kumiko at the day of the festival. Reina was already almost the only thing on Kumiko’s mind, now she’s even more on her mind. 

Next we see the scene of Kumiko having a mental breakdown while Reina tries to hold her together. Now this is a really important scene. 

In each episode we get to know Kumiko better and we see that Kumiko is actually pretty distant and tries to hide her emotions in order to prevent conflict. But in this scene we see that Kumiko being in a state of panic, seeks support from Reina. Kumiko lets her defenses completely down with Reina and shows her how vulnerable she feels (which is pretty rare!). Reina sensed Kumiko’s mood immediately after Kumiko only said her name and her words and actions are just what Kumiko needs to relax. Now why is this so important? Because this shows the basics of a relationship. Sharing your inner feelings and being each others support is what a relationship is all about. So the fact that Reina is the person that Kumiko can be herself with and for Reina to be her rock, is important. KyoAni didn’t choose Shuuichi, Hazuki, Midori or anybody else for this scene. No they chose Reina. This says something about why Kumiko and Reina would work so good as a couple, apart from their chemistry.

The last scene we see Kumiko getting nervous during the audition. Now how does she recover? She thinks about Reina. Again, just think about how important this is. 

To conclude, I still believe in Kumiko x Reina as (ambiguously) endgame because KyoAni has done everything for 9 episodes long to bring these two characters closer to each other. While KyoAni could have used the same amount of screen time for a Kumiko x Shuuichi or Reina x Taki-sensei plot. But until now they didn’t, so I don’t think they will.

Honestly, I like Shuichi’s character and personality, he’s a laid-back and honest guy who is genuinely kind. But the one thing I can't stand about him is what he said to Kumiko in their last year of junior high and he still hasn't apologised. It obviously upset Kumiko and that’s the reason I can’t ship her with him, it doesn't feel right.
