Another trip down memory lane today as I sit in quarantine. Here’s a collection from my first ever trip to Yosemite National park, in November 2018. Been obsessed with the place ever since… which is your favorite? 🏞

“We’re gonna face the future together, Hosea. You and me.”
No sleep only drawing young Vandermatthews. I pictured Hosea’s line about Dutch saying they’d “face the future together” as a sorta under the stars moment,, so here we are.

If John could do it all over again, he would have tried to join them sooner, catch Arthur as young as he possibly could. He would have talked to Hosea more, and kicked Dutch in his shins a few more times as pre-revenge and also to make Arthur laugh when he did it.
He wouldn’t have fought with him so much after he started dating Mary. Arthur did always invite him, but childish jealousy and his genuine sadness always made him decline. He would go every time Arthur asked.
He would have been kinder to him whenever Arthur talked about Issac or asked for John to meet him. He felt like one day Arthur wouldn’t come back after he was born and that he would be left behind so he thought being mean would lessen the blow.
And he definitely would not run off for a year like he did. He wouldn’t try again neither when they were stuck in the Grizzlies that spring. Their relationship wasn’t quite the same after he ran off the first time, and being caught and saved by him no less didn’t do him any favors.
John would have thrown a tantrum fit for a little brother in order to keep Arthur from riding off to Downes’ Farm. Or he would have went in his place, or at least joined him.
He would be nicer to Jack and Abigail much earlier. He knew Arthur was envious and hurt everytime he caught him with his family. He was a fool, and he always brought up these feelings whenever they fought about John’s bad parenting.
He would’ve killed Micah after the Blackwater heist, or even before it.
The Pinkertons were waiting for him outside the barn, he saw an army of suits through the cracks of the wood. He’s reminded of the time where his brother fought an army of them off with the machine gun and he wasn’t there to help. It’s different now. He tugs at the brim of Arthur’s hat as he steadies himself.
He’s here with him now.

Arthur eyed the boy with a look of disdain. "He ain't mine." He said to the lawman holding the runt by the scruff of his collar.
The boy looked heartbroken. 12 years old, underfed, all bite and twice as much bark. His face fell and he went slack under the lawman's grip.
It was pathetic, pitiful, and Arthur hated the rush of guilt that swept over him.
"Oh, what the hell," he scrubbed a hand over his jaw. "I'll take him. But you know Hosea is gonna give you hell for this, boy."
The lawman released John and he ran to Arthur, hiding behind him, tiny hands fisted in his shirt.
Arthur rolled his eyes and sorted things out with the deputy. 'He's just a stupid kid. He didn't know any better. His pa will beat some sense into him.'
John looked up at Arthur with wide terrified eyes as they made their way to where Arthur's horse was hitched. "Is Hosea really gonna beat me?"
The question stopped Arthur in his tracks. He looked down ay John, bewildered. "Marston, I have never seen Hosea raise a hand against someone as long as I've known him. I only said that to get rid of the deputy."
He let John scramble into the saddle. "Grimshaw, on the other hand, can knock your lights out." John stiffened, and Arthur was glad he couldn't see the shit eating grin plastered across his face.
-
"You stay out of this," the drunken man snarled. Arthur was tempted to listen, to walk away and pretend he didn't see anything, but he couldn't.
"Seems you have my brother there," Arthur responded coolly. John's head fell back and he grinned at Arthur, lips and teeth bloody, eye already blackening. "And the only one allowed to beat his ass is me."
The drunken man dropped John, and he hit the ground hard. A graceless, muddy heap. Served him right.
Arthur sidestepped the first few hits and clocked the man in the jaw. He took a fist to the gut for hit and cursed Marston for dragging him into this mess. Two more hits and the drunken man went down. Arthur spat on him before knocking the toe of his boot against John's hip.
"Up, you idiot. You owe me a drink for that."

John: I’m John Marston and this is my much older brother, Arthur Morgan.
John: We don’t have the same last name. We were adopted that’s why we’re not both named Marston.
Arthur: I think they get that.
John: His dad is my dad. He adopted both of us.
Arthur: They get it!
John: Our dad doesn’t have the same last name either.
Arthur: *sigh*

So you don't see Hosea and Dutch as actively being in a relationship during the story of the game?
Mmm, yes and no? No, I don't think we're seeing a romantic relationship at this point in time. I do think that these two do, and always have and always will, very deeply care for each other.
The game goes out of it's way to show how much Hosea means to Dutch, how much he relies on him and his guidance, and how much he admires him. Dutch adores Hosea, he takes care of him and checks on him and praises him and actually takes his opinions into consideration- things Dutch does not tend to do for other people. From the opening scene of the game, we see him trying to take care of Hosea (hosea: "what should we do, Dutch?" Dutch, grabbing Hosea's shoulder: "YOU are gonna get inside and stay warm.") When Dutch loses Hosea, he grieves him intensely. I don't think we ever see him stop grieving Hosea. He loses everything when he loses Hosea, he can't think, he can't use reason, he makes bad choices, he loses his entire gang and family, loses the two boys he raised as his sons. He isn't himself without Hosea. When he gets in from Guarma, the very first thing Charles tells him is that he got Hosea's body and gave him a proper burial because Charles, who had only been with this group for a few months at this point, knows how important that would have been to Dutch. Dutch tells Arthur he misses Hosea and that Arthur reminds him of Hosea, which makes sense, Arthur writes in his journal that he loved Hosea more than Dutch and you can clearly see Hosea's influence on Arthur in the way he acts and talks.
Hosea, for his part, also cares deeply for Dutch. Honestly if he didn't he wouldn't put up with Dutch's shit. Hosea is a no nonsense kind of guy, as we can see when he loses his temper with various characters throughout the story. He would not tolerate Dutch if he didn't care for him.
Hosea is the one who referred to them when they were younger as a curious couple and called Arthur their son, neither Arthur nor Dutch dispute this, they laugh and reminisce happily about it. Hosea, at the Shady Belle camp, talks wistfully around the campfire about Dutch, about how he used to be, how he was when they met. He says "Oh he was really something back then, I guess he's still something now." To which Arthur replies "You two was meant to be Hosea!" Hosea chuckles, almost sadly, and just says "Well" again, sounding sad and nostalgic. Hosea is tired, he's tired at this point in his life of the running and of Dutch's grandiose ideas. From as early as chapter 2, we see him trying to talk sense into the younger gang members and trying to get them to move on and live normal lives. He still cares for Dutch, they've been together for 25 years, give or take, at this point. He isn't going to leave him but he's tired and he's weary and I don't think anything that he has left for Dutch is romantic, it's close and deep and loving sure, but they're not currently in a romantic relationship from what I can see. Dutch does hold Hosea's hand, and apart from that, they're generally very physically affectionate and can often be seen in the campsites with their arms around each other or touching each other or just being extremely close. But I think that's more of a habit, at this point.
My headcanon is that as younger men, they were in a relationship that was, at least partially, romantic in nature. I think that there are just a lot of indications that there was probably something deep, loving, and even romantic between them at some point in time. They probably were together, in a relationship, for a few years, maybe around the same time they picked up Arthur because we hear references to it being just the three of them, Bessie and Annabel aren't mentioned yet. They probably ended the romantic part of their relationship at some point, I imagine Dutch is just hard to be with and Hosea probably just had enough. They then likely found Bessie and Annabel and settled into happy relationships with them until they both, very unfortunately, died. At that point, Dutch and Hosea are alone again. They have their boys, they have some degree of a gang at this point, they still care for each other, how could you not love someone that you've raised two boys with and spent decades of your life living with. They decide to still stay together because like I said they're lost without each other. So they stay together, they fight often, but they still do love each other and care for each other and try their best to be happy. They reminisce about happier days, Hosea lovingly tells stories of their old days and keeps newspaper clippings of their fun heists, Dutch still takes care of Hosea and keeps an eye on him.
They genuinely give off "I will always love you but I'm not in love with you" vibes and it's tragic and beautiful and really fitting for the characters and their story.

Not a major detail that I noticed right away but, replaying Chapter 3 for the third time I noticed that each mission you do with a gang member has its own music that sort of..fits? Like! When you hunt with Charles in Colter it’s tense and there’s drums and it’s new and exciting, and when you go house robbing with Sean the music is bouncy and daring and loud. I never paid attention to that before! I’ll soon rediscover what the fishing trip with Javiers music is like. Just thought it was cool.
This is on my low honor route too because as much as it pains me I want to at least try it once- and I did the mission with Charles for scouting Clemens point and it’s endearing how Charles and Arthur bicker back and forth like an old couple. It hurts! Because Arthur’s being a rude bitch. But it’s also endearing 😂

So, apparently Hosea wanted to rob some family, instead stumbled upon a man's funeral, had to pretend he was his closest friend from times of gold rush that nobody heard about, got too sad about it and only robbed a priest. What a man.

The fact that Arthur still hasn’t forgive John for running away that one time even tho it’s been years and everyone else forgave him already, but not Arthur. ‘I want you to never look back’

John refusing to leave Arthur’s side, wanting to stay with him so he doesn’t have to die alone, thinking that maybe he can still save him…
… only leaving when he understands how much Arthur wants him to succeed and survive, because it would mean a lot to him in his dying moments, the mere thought that John is safe will make all of this pain worth it
Arthur giving John his hat and satchel
‘You’re my brother‘
‘I know… I know‘
Arthur keeping pinkertons distracted so John can escape
John thinking about Arthur often even years after his death
John rushing to a fight at Hanging Dog Ranch with Arthur’s hat on his head
John talking with sadness but also fondness about Arthur with people they both met and have been friends with
John looking back despite Arthur telling him not to because he couldn’t stand the thought that Micah is still alive and well while Arthur is dead
John avenging Arthur
Those two loved each other so much and no one can convince me otherwise.
