EXAM EVALUTATION
The artists I chose to explore for this exam theme were primarily based upon the theme of memory to with internal environment (which I began with), however as my prep work progressed I altered the theme I was working on and it became mental disorders. The first artist I looked into was David Szauder who formed glitches and distortions in portrait face photos, his work maintained an eerie ambience throughout, a rather ghostly mood lingers within his pieces and I took this into account when forming a range of experiments based upon his work. Although, personally I believe that the real influence from his art came from the atmosphere - as previously mentioned, and this was reflected in my final pieces as the dominant figures at the forefront of each poster are hauntingly thought-provoking and this was a key element to my mental disorder theme in aim to raise attention to the posters and the disorders behind each image. For the second artist Sean Dack, I particularly liked his glitch technique. By exploring his work I was able to create my own experiments with various types of glitch effects, which I had not known how to make before. I found the metaphorical idea of Dack attacking the border between the virtual and physical interesting and in relation to my own work this linked in perfectly as with mental disorders the mental state can have an impact on the outward view on life, hence the 2 states directly impose upon one another. Dan Mountford and Aliza Razell, perhaps influenced my work the most out of all of my artist choices, the concept of merging 2 images or mediums together is the main technique which I experimented with in the final pieces as I combined my watercolour paintings with the photographs. The idea behind this was to convey how they have an impact upon each other and it enabled me to emphasise precisely, the extent of the disturbing nature behind the pieces.
The final outcomes which I have created are a set of 3 posters and an accompanying 4 page brochure. I felt that the pieces each work together and form a visually effective set of posters which undoubtedly raise attention to the mental disorder theme. I am pleased with the way in which the various elements came together, for instance the main photograph/watercolour faces and the neurons which I designed in Blender. The interesting look of the neurons and their 3D effect, enabled my posters to in a way appear more life-like; hence making the issue of mental disorders very real indeed. The brochure also was largely successful as it held various aspects of each poster within its contents, yet in a more simplistic way so that the full watercolour pieces were mot fully exposed, instead little parts. The idea behind this was that an individual would have to look at the posters in order to see the entirety of the piece. However, in the exam at times I felt like I was short on composition ideas for the brochure, especially because I left it till last, I placed pressure on myself to think of ideas very quickly. This was not helped by the fact that when inserting the NHS logo and RI logo into InDesign, they appeared blurry. I overcame this by exporting the piece numerous times and hence understood that the resolution was not high enough. Personally, I feel like I have been fairly adventurous with my ideas, given the time restriction. I am happy with how the posters and leaflet work together, especially in terms of composition.
My client, being the Royal Institute and NHS is clear on both my brochure and posters as the logos are present in each. My set of posters match the style of the Ri posters as they hold a dominating image which expresses the general theme behind the poster itself. In addition, the neurons link with the science factor of the organisation and imply that the lectures/talks will be largely science-informative based. The viewer of the final outcomes should be inclined to visit the web address at the bottom of the page in order to find out more information on the event.
The graphics outcomes are aimed at possibly teenagers through to the elderly - simply, people who would have a background understanding of what mental disorders are, and may be interested in learning more. I have done this by making the posters very visually insightful and capturing, however also incorporating key text and information. The poster colours and flow is uniform and there are no childish cartoons which would suggest that the posters are aimed at a particularly young audience. The main impact I wanted the posters to have was a powerful attention-grabbing image which in itself is influential in the melancholic tone that these posters hold. Although, I would say, the depression and insomnia ones are more upsetting, rather than the child dementia image. The font I chose was ‘Letter Gothic STD’ and this is a basic, professional-looking sans-serif font. It is minimalistic and works with the neurons and image so that it does not overpower, however compliment.
If I had more time on this project, I would possibly create some branding elements so that the entirety of the event that I have designed posters for could be made even bigger by some form of marketing factors. These could be simple pieces such as tshirts or pens, however they would force me to think about ways of including the main elements of the posters onto much smaller platforms - hence pushing me to further experiment with each individual component.

Screenshots from the cover of the brochure and the progress. I used a noise-effect version of the insomnia watercolour and underlayed another version underneath to add depth to the background, as a simplistic colour appeared too basic. I kept the information to a minimal on the front, as the columns and blocks of text were seen within the brochure.

Progress screenshots from the brochure. Since I was running short for time I did not want to make it overly complex, although I still wanted to include elements from all posters. The lines in the piece add a geometrical element and add a graphics effect to the visual factor of the brochure.

I placed the posters onto some billboard templates so that I could see what they looked like in a real life situation and I am pleased with the results.

SET OF 3 FINAL POSTERS
I changed the ‘christmas lectures’ on the old posters to ‘child edition mental health’ as this better portrays that the posters are solely focused on children and not everyone in general. Moreover I added an NHS logo, since the 2 organisations are working in conjunction with one another.

Progress of the neck area. In the bottom post the line between the neck and chin appears too harsh and hence to limit this I darkened the area to provide more flow and consistency. However, I think I will change it again as it is too dark.

I used Blender again in the exam and created a collection of neurons. These are the screenshots - I inserted a screenshot of them all combined so that they would all be visible.

After combining the painting and the black and white photos I added noise to the skin in aim of adding texture, although I do not know if I will use this effect in the final posters.

Watercolour paintings that I did in the exam. I changed them all a little, the depression one has more layers and colours - whereas the old post is more just a blend of blue. The new insomnia painting, has more deeper shades of red, layers also. I prefer these to the first ones.
