Pain and Allergy Relief: One Medical Doctor’s Personal Experience
From Andrew Doan, M.D., Ph.D. (December 2018): “The current epidemic of chronic pain and unwellness, and tragic opioid overuse, calls for exploration of alternative solutions. I strongly believe grounding is one such promising solution. “About a year ago, I injured the bottom of my left foot and continued to aggravate it when using the foot pedal on the operating microscope for cataract surgeries. I’m an ophthalmologist and use the bottom of my left foot to move a joystick to position the scope’s field of view. “The foot pain plagued me for more than three months until a friend sent me information about grounding/Earthing. Willing to give it a try, but not sure it would do anything, I simply took a barefoot walk outside on the grass for a half-hour. Within a half-hour after returning, I was surprised to experience that my foot pain resolved. “I kept walking daily. The pain recurred, however, as I re-injured the foot with continued use of the microscope. “I was able to eliminate the pain by using a BBQ skewer, speaker wire, and then taping the speaker wire ends to the bottom of my feet at the K1 acupuncture point and sleeping that way. The setup wasn’t very comfortable so I decided to get an Earthing mat for the bed. The pain has never come back! “During the time I have been grounding, I have seen other benefits, such as better sleep, lower blood pressure, less fatigue, and much reduced seasonal allergy symptoms. One Massage Therapist’s Experience (Earthing / Grounding)
Nancy Reid, a massage therapist in Gowanda, NY, first contacted us in 2010. Here’s what she said:
“Nothing so far has helped me as much as Earthing with my sleep and energy levels which were in the basement. My pain level was sometimes 6 to 8 on a 10 point scale. Now it’s down to 4-5 and sometimes I don’t have pain at all.
“There have been times when I would just sit in my chair knowing I had chores to do and not do them. Now I get up and do things and then find more things to do that I haven’t been able to do before. Clean out a closet, feed the birds, clean up the yard. I can actually do them instead of just thinking about them.
“I am having a wonderful response to grounding. I have had sleep difficulties for many years and can now say I sleep 100% better. I have been trying to repair my body for years with other natural health means, herbs, supplements, etc., and maybe after all this time, they have finally helped, however, it wasn’t until I had grounded for two months that I noticed SIGNIFICANT differences in sleep as well as energy during the day. In 2015, Nancy wrote us to say that she’s still grounding routinely and “doing great.” She says she still has some muscle pain and attributes that to her massage work. “But I recover and the fatigue is much, much better. Feel some relief after grounding!
Colleen Flynn is a 76-year-old Australian woman who has had fibromyalgia for more than sixty years, a result of multiple stresses in her life: the early death of her father, growing up in various homes, caring for a new husband incapacitated by a back injury, then a son born with a severe immune system deficit, the sudden death of her husband hit by lightning. and a double mastectomy (breast cancer). There were times, beginning as a girl, she told us, that her body was so painful that no one could touch her. Even a mere breeze made her feel worse.
“Over the years, I went to so many specialists to evaluate what I had, and after patting me on the back, they told me that there are just some people that doctors can’t help and I was one of them,” she said. Finally, she received a diagnosis of fibromyalgia, along with medication that helped her to some degree. Still, her pain issues continued. In the afternoons she would often collapse into a chair to watch TV, tired and in pain from just “doing the little bits around the house that I could manage.” She said she would frequently just stumble painfully to her room for a night of more pain. In the spring of 2014, she heard about David Richards, an Australian physician not far from where she lived, who was grounding his patients “and getting great results for people with pain.” Although skeptical, she went to see him and obtained some Earthing bands. She recalled the first time she used them. “My daughter had come over for lunch, and afterward we sat on the sofa. I put on a wristband. After 45 minutes, my daughter asked me if I felt any different. I replied I didn’t think so. Then I fell asleep, a deep sleep. When I woke up, I was full of energy. I cooked pikelets (pancakes) for tea, then cleared up and wouldn’t let anyone help me. I did the lot. I went to bed and slept all night. Later I got an Earthing throw and a sheet. I soon realized that when I use them, I have little or no pain.” One of Colleen’s doctors suggested she form a fibromyalgia support group in her hometown. Since its formation in 2009, the group has attracted about 30 members and holds monthly meetings.
“We are all trying to control some level of neuropathic pain,” she said. According to Colleen, Earthing has helped many individuals in her group. She offered several examples:
– “One lady also has Parkinson’s, restless legs, and incontinence. She obtained an Earthing sheet but couldn’t use it because of the incontinence. So she decided to go for a walk with her dog each morning barefooted. In about six weeks, the restless legs were gone as was the incontinence. She now sleeps grounded on her sheet. The change in her has been remarkable.” – “One of the young women has several serious problems. She obtained an Earthing sheet but when she put it on her bed she felt silly, that it was probably just a gimmick and wouldn’t work. The next morning she texted me to say it was the first time she had slept all night in five years. When I saw her next, the difference was remarkable. Her face looked so rested. She said she was sleeping on the sheet pain-free.” – “At one meeting, I brought some grounding wrist bands for others to try. One woman stood up at the end of the meeting and said she was now pain-free. She suffered also from irritable bowel syndrome and had a pain that never left her.” – “We have about sixteen people in our group grounding themselves indoors. All of them get great results.”
Colleen said that when she gets into bed and onto her Earthing sheet, she usually sleeps all night: “I am getting that deep restorative level of sleep. I wake up in the morning feeling fresh with energy and ready to face the day. If I have to get up to go to the bathroom, the pain will come back strong all over my body and sometimes I think I won’t make it. Once I get back on the Earthing sheet, I can feel the pain being drawn out of my body. The pain goes away and I usually fall back to sleep. If I don’t go back to sleep, I lay awake and simply marvel that I’m not in pain. When I am having a tough time through the day, I go to bed and the pain leaves me.”
Colleen said that Earthing has infused her with energy and enabled her to reduce her dosages of medication.
“I have discovered the magic of Earthing. When I go to see my specialists, I arrive fresh and alert, not tired at all. I am having a much better quality of life. I am now able to play and converse with my beautiful grandchildren and great-grandchildren, instead of struggling and pretending when I really wasn’t coping very well at all. I teach scrapbooking and can sit and work for two hours and control my pain. I am living. My challenge now is to pace myself and realize I can’t do everything. ”

Scientific researches on Earthing & Grounding
After discovering the healing energy of the Earth, Clint Ober joined the Polish Drs. Pawel and Karol Sokal to establish scientific evidence.
Their research on the Earth has produced fascinating evidence of the Earth's ability to generate a positive effect on the electrical state of the human body. Their studies laid the foundation for subsequent studies that echoed the same result: that grounding allows the free circulation of Earth's electrons in our system, and that electrons are the source of the antioxidant neutralizing power.
Studies also indicate a reduction in pain and chronic inflammation in many patients with pain or chronic disease. Here are some highlights of the most important grounding research.
GROUNDING AND BLOOD VISCOSITY
With respect to health benefits, it is known that grounding has a significant impact on blood viscosity.
For this study, experts Dr. Stephen Sinatra and James Oschman recruited three people with chronic inflammation-related pain. They measured the blood viscosity of the subjects with a method called zeta potential, which measures the speed with which red blood cells migrate into an electric field.
If you fail, your zeta potential increases rapidly, causing your red blood cells to develop more on their surface and distance themselves from each other. In turn, your blood viscosity improves. They used a darkfield microscope to capture their results (right).
The images on the left are before grounding, and those on the right are 45 minutes after grounding. The images show significant thinning and decoupling of blood cells.
GROUNDING AND CHRONIC KNEE PAIN
For the above case study, a 48-year-old woman with severe chronic bilateral knee pain (resulting from a 6-year injury) used a grounding patch for 30 minutes. The thermographic images above before and after the treatment show a drastic reduction in chronic inflammation. After initial exposure to grounding, the patient reported a 20% reduction in pain and after 12 weeks of regular grounding, she reported an incredible 90% reduction in pain.
Earthing and chronic foot and ankle pain
The 57-year-old patient in this case study suffered from chronic bilateral foot and ankle pain. After 2 nights of sleep on land, he reported a pain reduction of more than 80%. After 4 weeks, the patient said that his pain had disappeared with only occasional stiffness. The images before (left) and after (right) above show a marked improvement in circulation and a decrease in inflammation. Note that his toes are not initially visible due to poor circulation and ambient temperature levels.
EARTHING AND CHRONIC BACK PAIN
The upper images are from a case study of a 44-year-old woman with chronic central back pain. After 4 nights of sleep on land, she reported a 30% reduction in pain and after 8 weeks, the pain was completely resolved. The lower images are of 85-year-old male suffering from chronic low back pain and recurrent shoulder pain. After 2 nights of sleep, he reported a 50% reduction in pain and after 4 weeks, he reported pain resolution and improved sleep
EARTHING AND CHRONIC HAND PAIN
For this case study, a 49-year-old woman suffering from insomnia and chronic pain slept on grounded bed sheets for 4 consecutive nights. The arrows in the upper thermographic images (before) indicate areas of poor circulation, and the lower images (after) show the return of correct circulation and decrease in inflammation. The patient reported a drastic reduction in pain and an improvement in sleep, with constant and continuous improvement after follow-up.

What is Earthing?
Earthing (or grounding, both words will be used interchangeably) is a practice whereby individuals are put in direct contact with the surface of the Earth. It includes walking barefoot outdoors, swimming in oceans and lakes, or sleeping, working and relaxing indoors with bare skin in contact with conductive grounding mats, grounding bed sheets, grounding pillows, grounding body bands and patches in order to maintain the body at Earth’s electric potential.
Unlike past cultures, most people today, particularly in industrial societies, rarely are in contact with the surface of the Earth. They wear shoes with synthetic soles that insulate them from the Earth’s electric charge, and they no longer sleep on the ground. Knee surgery
From Dick Brown, Ph.D., a well-known Oregon exercise physiologist and trainer of elite athletes.
“I personally experienced the benefit of grounding when I had a right knee replacement in 2009. I needed it after years of being physically active at a fairly high level. This is my second knee replacement surgery. The first was ten years ago. Subjectively, I felt I was improving a little bit faster. But five weeks after the operation, when I went to the surgeon for a checkup, he looked at my leg and looked at my movement and said, ‘At five weeks, you are where most people are at three months.’ He was speaking in terms of movement, wound healing, and swelling. I obviously attribute that partly to my knowledge of rehabbing, but the grounding certainly didn’t hurt, and I honestly believe it helped. It had a positive effect.”
“I sleep grounded, and I also use grounded electrode patches locally. Before surgery, I noticed that when I put the patches on the area of the knee that was hurting, it definitely reduced the pain compared to when I didn’t have the patches on. I needed surgery for about a year but kept putting it off because I had things to do. And so at night, my leg got really painful. So I slept on the rounded sheet and slept better, and further knocked the pain down with the patches.”

One woman told me that when her grandkids come over they sleep with her. She’s grounded in her bed. They tell her that they feel so much better. That’s amazing to hear from a young kid.
“My own teenage son sleeps with an Earthing band and also uses one when he plays video games. He tells his friends that it keeps him healthy and that they should get one.
“I told my mother to try it. She has complained about waking up at night. I gave her an Earthing mat and she sleeps like a baby now. “Amazing,” she says. She feels more energized.
“Then there’s the benefit of rapid healing, which is huge. Whether it is low back pain or knee pain, or any chronic pain issue, there is always a change, a difference. Less pain. It works. I see results of pain relief even in a few minutes of Earthing in my office. It is best, however, if people ground themselves at home, at night when they are sleeping, and even during the day if they can. If they don’t want to spend any money on an Earthing product, I tell them to go out in their backyard, weather permitting, and ground themselves there.
“One case involved a woman, the sister of a patient, who fell and suffered contusions and bruising on the side of her face. She used an Earthing band and patches, and in about three days there was only a trace of black and blue marks on her face.
“Earthing fits in neatly with my chiropractic treatments. They work at a deeper level. The pain lessens so much quicker. I may use one or two Earthing patches on a patient, on the top side of the foot (liver point 2), and/or on the sole (kidney point 1). I leave a patch on for up to 10 minutes. This strategy promotes significant relaxation. And relaxing allows for greater energy flow in the body. I can feel the difference in my hands as I treat the patient. Ninety-nine percent of the time, the patient is looser and responds quicker. There is less tenderness in acupuncture points when I apply acupressure. The adjustment is easier. The treatment is more effective.
“There’s another aspect to this as well. Earthing enables people in a very direct way to understand that they are connected to a higher source, to Nature, and they can heal better as a result of this connection.”

Beating Insomnia, Fatigue, and Adrenal Exhaustion – One Woman’s Story
In early 2015, Barbara, a disappointed West Coast businesswoman, contacted us to say that she had been grounding for three nights and hadn’t experienced any improvements.
“I want so to be among the people who have great results,” she said. “But right now I am a little discouraged. Maybe my sleep is a little better, but nothing obvious and miraculous. I am so hopeful, even desperate, to be well.”
Barbara, 57, is the proprietor of a landscape business. She said she has had chronic insomnia ever since her college days. Over time she developed adrenal exhaustion, anxiety, depression, chronic coughing, and joint and muscle pain flares. She’d lived in a compromised state for the previous eight years, and been fatigued continually for almost a year-and-a-half. At the end of 2013, she became severely ill and weak and had to be treated repeated times at the emergency room or in urgent care.
Stress played a big part in her health problems, she admitted.
Doctors had provided little help or guidance.
“They cared, but they didn’t know what to do with me, other than to prescribe medication,” she said. When one physician put her on an anti-depressant, her exhaustion and despair only deepened. “If only I could have slept, I could have climbed out of this awful pit. But sleep to me was unattainable.”
Two naturopaths told her the problem was adrenal exhaustion, something that conventional doctors often do not recognize. They said her recovery would be complex and slow. They suggested natural remedies. Very slowly she began feeling better but for more than a year she still felt compromised, “a shadow of who I used to be.”
“I needed something to work,” she said. “I was desperate. I was still not sleeping well.”
By chance, Barbara came across an online health forum where Earthing was mentioned. The idea resonated with her. She read the Earthing book and obtained an Earthing sheet.
“I had more hope for complete recovery than I had had in a very long time,” she said.
And that’s why she contacted us after three nights of sleeping grounded and feeling disappointed that her expected dramatic relief hadn’t come.
Many people like Barbara are hopeful that Earthing will generate a quick and significant turnaround in health. When it doesn’t happen as soon as expected, they contact us.
From our side, we can’t predict how fast any particular individual will respond to grounding. We know that grounding works, whether dramatically or subtly, and at many levels.
In Barbara’s case, we told her that we have heard from people over the years with adrenal exhaustion, typically a result of chronic stress, who have reported major improvement. We asked her to be patient and be grounded as much as possible.
About a month later, Barbara contacted us again – with good news.
“I am sleeping longer and more soundly than I have slept in years,” she said. “My energy and vitality are vastly improving. My blood pressure is improving, my aches and pains are far less pronounced. I believe all the other therapies I’ve been doing needed the Earthing as a sort of catalyst to experience true recovery. Earthing has been the missing ingredient. I told two family members about my experience and they, too, started grounding. One with asthma and one started to speed athletic recovery. Both are seeing results and are very enthusiastic.”
Barbara said her life had changed in a single month of grounding: “hugely improved sleep, less joint and muscle pain, feeling less foggy, and, gratefully, having my joy of life return.”
With renewed energy, Barbara was also able to re-energize her business that had suffered due to her personal health and the overall economic malaise.
In October 2015, Barbara contacted us again to report she was “doing amazingly well.”
She hardly recognizes herself, neither can others, she said. “I’ve healed. I’m sleeping well. Handling the added stress of new business excellently. I’m in an uphill spiral so to speak. I feel whole and strong, and so grateful.”

Science has long known that the surface of the Earth contains a natural electric charge, felt by some people as a pleasant tingling when walking on wet grass in the morning or along the wet sand at the beach.
New research has produced convincing evidence that direct contact with the Earth’s electrons (the source of negative electric charge in nature) stabilizes and rejuvenates the body by recharging and thinning our blood, enhancing immune function, and powerfully and dramatically reducing inflammation, pain, and stress. The degree to which the body shifts into a healing state is substantial, and of great medical significance.
In today’s society, most people have lost contact with the Earth and its healing power. We wear shoes with synthetic soles that block the Earth’s energy, and we live and work elevated from the ground. Grounding the Human Body: The Healing Benefits of Earthing
The Earth is like a gigantic battery that contains a natural, subtle electrical charge—a special kind of energy present in the ground. For safety and stability, almost everything in the electrical world is connected to it, whether it is an electric power plant or your refrigerator. That’s what the term “grounded” means.
Being grounded also applies to people. When you are electrically grounded, you feel:
Centered
Solid
Strong
Balanced
Less tense
Less stressed
Overall, you feel good. If you have pain, you have less of it, or maybe none at all, when grounded.
INCREASE IN ILLNESS
Many people live with daily pain and constant stress, anxiety, depression, and fatigue. They feel out-of-sorts--not centered, strong, or solid. Doctors often can’t find the cause and resort to prescribing medications that produce side effects like fatigue, poor mood, gastrointestinal upset, and headaches.
There has been an increase in the number of people suffering from autoimmune diseases. Fifty million people in the U.S are suffering from diseases including:
Multiple sclerosis
Lupus
Inflammatory bowel disorders
Rheumatoid arthritis
Researchers don’t know the specific causes behind the steep increases in a diversity of illnesses. Some say it is because people are eating more unnatural foods than ever and that the ingredients in these foods could be harmful.
While certain lifestyle approaches such as meditation and yoga can help, there are limitations to their effectiveness for many of these illnesses.
LOSING TOUCH WITH THE GROUND
You are a bioelectrical being living on an electrical planet. Your body operates electrically. All of your cells transmit multiple frequencies that run, for example, your heart, immune system, muscles, and nervous system.
With the exception of humans living in industrialized societies, all living things on our planet are connected to the ground’s electric energy. In industrialized societies, you rarely go barefoot and walk around outside or wear natural leather shoes that allow you to absorb the ground’s energy. For many decades, people have increasingly been wearing rubber and plastic-soled shoes that act as a barrier to the Earth’s energy, insulating them from electrical contact with the Earth. People also generally don’t sleep on the ground anymore, as many cultures have done throughout history. They live and work above the ground, even far above the ground in high-rises.
The truth is, you’re disconnected. You’re ungrounded. You are not in touch with the Earth. Could this disconnection be an overlooked factor in the increase of illnesses noted earlier?
HEALING BENEFITS OF GROUNDING
Scientific research over more than a decade indicates that your body can be protected and helped—and that you feel better—when you electrically reconnect to the Earth. That is when you are grounded. Here are three examples of potential benefits that have been reported in these studies:
1. DECREASED LEVELS OF INFLAMMATION AND PAIN
Being grounded can help relieve inflammation. The following images show a 44-year-old woman with chronic back pain, as monitored by thermography, a commonly used imaging method in medicine. The left image was taken before grounding. The red patterns represent “hot” areas of pain and inflammation. The right image shows a sharp reduction in inflammation after four nights of sleeping grounded, at which time the woman reported:
30 percent reduction in pain
70 percent reduction in pain interfering with sleep
30 percent reduction in morning stiffness and soreness
After four weeks, she reported:
80 percent reduction in pain
No sleep interference
70 percent reduction in morning stiffness and soreness
By eight weeks, she said her pain was gone.
2. REDUCED STRESS LEVELS
When grounded, the diurnal rhythm of the stress hormone, cortisol, begins to normalize. Cortisol is connected to your body’s stress response and helps control blood sugar levels, regulates metabolism, helps reduce inflammation, and assists with memory formulation. The figure below shows the results of a study that examined the effects of being grounded while sleeping over the course of eight weeks.
In addition to a normalization of the cortisol rhythm, participants in this study also slept better and woke up feeling more refreshed.
IMPROVED CIRCULATION
When you are grounded, your circulation improves, aiding in the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the tissues in your body, including better blood flow to your face. HOW TO RECONNECT TO THE EARTH
While the research on grounding for your health and well-being is relatively new, the practice is timeless. Past societies went barefoot or wore leather footwear made from hides that allowed the energy from the Earth to rise up into their bodies. They were grounded.
Here’s the bottom line: You have lost your electrical roots, so to speak. You’re disconnected, and this disconnection may be a seriously overlooked cause of human pain and discomfort and the steeply rising incidence of chronic illness worldwide.
The good news is, you have the potential to reconnect. Weather and schedule permitting, go barefoot for a half-hour or so outside and see what a difference that makes on your pain or stress level. Sit, stand, or walk on soil, grass, sand, or concrete. These are all conductive surfaces from which your body can draw the Earth’s energy. Wood, asphalt, and vinyl are not conductive.
Ideally, you want to sustain the Earthing experience incorporate this healing energy into your daily routine.
For many people, however, there isn’t time in their current busy schedule to go out barefoot. So, there are also indoor options. Invest in grounding products—which can be used while sleeping, relaxing, or working—such as conductive:
Chairs
Bed pads
Floor and chair mats
Body bands
Patches to place on your body where it hurts
Whatever route you take, get grounded and feel vibrant.
