The Doctor knew Rose couldn't stay with him. And not just because she is a human and they "wither and die", and he as a time lord doesn't.

He knew because he met River Song, and he knew his future self would marry her. And that can only mean one thing, Rose Tyler will truly never come back. And that hurts him so deeply that he tries even harder to just *forget* her. Obviously he can't, but oh does he try.

And then she suddenly is back, and Donna wonders why he isn't happy, or at least not as happy as he should be. That's because the doctor knows something will happen to his beloved Rose. How could he live with that? So he tries to be distant, but that only works until he sees her smile again.

The thing is though, he knows he will lose her. But he cannot live with the thought of her dying, so when the meta-crisis happens he knows what he has to do.

He will store her safe and sound in Pete's world, will never see her again, but will know that she has this other version of him, and that she won't be alone, and that dulls the pain a little bit. Just enough so he can keep going.

the actual causes of ten's regeneration are probably the best it's ever been, because the stakes are... one person. one person's life. not the whole world; not a whole people; not a whole country. not even a companion. just one guy that the doctor happens to like. he doesn't even have to give up his life. wilf could die and he could just walk away. but he can't. because he's the doctor, and his reign of terror ends with the sight of the first crying child. it's also good because ten fully deserves to be kicked down the stairs repeatedly
