Butcher and Blackbird (Ruinous Love Trilogy) by Brynne Weaver
"I would kill for you, and I have. I would do it again, every damn day. I’d turn myself inside out for you. I would die for you. I don’t just like you, Sloane, and you fucking know it."

“You might be psycho,” I say with a grin as her eyes narrow, “but you’re my psycho, and I’m yours. Got it?”

I wish kinky sex ed wasn't so stigmatized even among left-leaning "sex positive" circles. Everyone's all "uwu I'm a sub I'll do anything you ask" okay mommy wants you to read The New Bottoming Book so you learn how to sub without hurting yourself since your sex ed up to this point is porn and your ex boyfriend Jared who liked to choke you incorrectly

My books are first sorted by genre (like a library), then by author, then series-in-publication-order. If I have multiple stand-alone books by a single author, they get put in alphabetical order.

The Bromance Book Club
A Review
4/5 ⭐️
3.5/5 🌶️
Does it pass the Bechdel Test? I don’t think so, unless you count two toddlers talking to each other about school briefly in the background.
Pro baseball player Gavin Scott is in trouble. Or rather, his marriage is in trouble. He just found out his wife has been, well.. faking it. For the last three years. He didn’t handle the news well. Now Gavin has a month in which to win her back - and he’s determined to do it, with the help of his buddies and romance novels.
It’s a little bit cheesy, but I liked it. Men reading romance novels to learn vulnerability and openness with their wives and girlfriends? Yes please! Both sides eventually realizing that they’re as much to blame as the other? Beautiful. Grand gestures? Abound!
It’s a cute book, and definitely wish fulfillment. I’m glad my library has all five books in the series so I can reread at my leisure without having to spend $50+.

Butcher & Blackbird
A Review
5/5 ⭐️
5/5 🌶️
Passes the Bechdel Test? Maybe. But trust me, this woman has AGENCY.
Two serial killer vigilantes who only kill other serial killers collide in this hilarious, sexy, and darkly romantic friends-to-lovers novel.
Butcher meets Blackbird when they target the same victim, a serial killer that needs doing away with. From there on out, they have an annual competition where they are given a location only and they see who can find and kill their target first. Winner gets the right to the kill and bragging rights for the year. Sounds great, right? Except for Rowan, he only came up with the game in order to spend more time with Sloane. That's right, he falls first and he falls HARD. She.. takes a while to catch up.
This book is not for everyone. It's gory. It's detailed. It.. has some body horror aside from the serial killing. Seriously, pay attention to the trigger warning list. It's hilarious, but so accurate. I don't know when I'll be able to eat cookies and cream ice cream again.
At the same time, this novel is also romantic, spicy, and freaking HILARIOUS. There were times where I wanted to swoon, laugh, and vomit all at the same time. Which, I know, doesn't sound fun - but I promise it is!
This book is a ROMP, and it took me less than a day to fly through it. I loved it so much that I got it as a library book and decided to buy it for myself so I can read it over and over.

Losing Neverland: A Dark Retelling
A Review
2.5/5 ⭐️
4.5/5 🌶️
Passes the Bechdel Test? Absolutely not.
I’m not sure what to say about this one.
On the one hand, it’s clunky and could use a LOT of editing. The first half of the story is confusing, which I’ll grant could be intentional because both of the MCs are working on brokenhearted assumptions and half or less of the truth. The twists were pretty predictable. I did question myself a few times about one of the plot twists, but my initial assumption was right.
On the other hand… I read it all in one night. Flew through it. I wanted to know the truth and I wanted the MCs to talk and be vulnerable and figure out the truth for themselves. And the sex scenes were super spicy, if sometimes hard to figure out how the bodies were configured (especially in the beginning).
The sex scenes, while hot, were unbelievable for two people who’d never had any kind of exposure to physical sexuality before each other. HOWEVER, I don’t mind suspending that disbelief, especially because those scenes were so hot! So that one pans out.
All in all, I would give this a 2.5 out of 5 stars. I would not want to spend money on this book, but I don’t mind having it, as it was a free galley in exchange for an honest review via NetGalley.
