Renewable Energy Targets set by Government Is Real
Ratul Puri, the Chairman of Hindustan Powerprojects Pvt. Ltd. highlighted that a clear and comprehensive strategy roadmap along with integrated planning is a pre-requisite for achieving the target of 175GW of renewable energy capacity by the year 2022. The analysis of domestic developmental and environmental considerations along with a whole-of-system approach is also required for it.
In order to beat the target of 2,000 MW and 2,400 MW, the solar and wind energy capacity of 3,019 MW and 3,300 MW respectively has been added by India in 2015-16. With tendering completed for an additional 21,000 MW of solar, India is poised to cross 20 GW, a target earlier set for 2022. The cost of new solar power is touted to come down below new coal power, resulting in growing optimism on India’s new renewable energy (RE) target for 2022 and its potential to transform the energy mix. The current government is simultaneously committed to ensure 24×7 power access for all by 2019 by creating cost-effective and sustainable infrastructure, inclusive of clean energy solutions.
The successive governments have set the virtuous goal of universal access to electricity. The current target to ensure affordable, quality and round-the-clock supply is ambitious for a country with the highest energy poverty, but not unattainable. However, it would require major transformations in the way electricity is produced, consumed and marketed in the country.
The government recognises the need and urgency, as reflected in domestic policy agenda. In its Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDC), India has set a target to achieve 40% cumulative installed capacity from fossil-fuel-free energy resources by 2030. In an earlier move, the government has committed to achieve 175GW of renewable energy capacity by 2022. Both the targets, backed by recent legislative initiatives, show India’s commitment to the promotion of renewables and reduction of their reliance on fossil fuel. Undoubtedly, renewable energy holds good promises for meeting India’s energy needs, in a sustainable manner.

Ratul Puri’s viewpoint on energy stations of renewable sources in India
With high demand of power consumption and low availability of fossils, the upcoming years for each nation in the world may acknowledge difficulties if timely action are not in place. The need for strong use of renewable sources of energy is recommended in each aspect of energy utilization for prosperity of respective country. This is what Ratul Puri has revealed in his recent interview in regard of Indian power scenario.
The government has brought forward various policies and tariffs to mitigate excessive use of non – renewable resources by virtue of engaging companies to increase investment in renewable resources of energy. Ratul Puri opines that enforcing approach in lowering tariffs is not maintainable whereas correction in the range of 10% may enhance productivity in the sector. Additionally, strengthening of grid is necessary according to him.
Since Hindustan Power is waiting for the policy announcements from the government, Ratul Puri continues to investigate hydro projects. The aim of the company is to take its two ready to built projects onto the construction site post the confirmation of new policy. While critically reviewing the infrastructural issues pertaining to hydro projects, Puri details out that some of the run-of-the-river hydro projects are typically built out in mountainous regions and a lot of the incremental hydro potential of this country is situated in the northeast. In order to access those sites, ability to bring construction material, equipment and most importantly the ability to evacuate power is necessary. Hence, for a developer it is eminent to construct the requisite infrastructure for building an asset.
The new thermal plant at Hindustan Power has implicated enormous development during its first phase, basis which second phase would include comparatively lower expenses. Puri further confirmed that India shall restart the investment cycle on coal thermal as it is crucial today due to limited size of thermal resources.
