romanticize a quiet life - other snippets here
“Time s’it?” Leckie’s breath is warm against his bare hip, the pajama bottoms he’d shrugged on before bed – an extra precaution against the cold, having ridden down, Hoosier assumed, when Bob did.
He turned enough to blink at the clock on the nightstand, felt every bone in his neck complain against the movement. It was dark enough for him to have to squint, even though the blinds were open, the bed pushed up against the window. “Almost seven.”
Leckie didn’t respond. Bill was pretty sure he’d fallen back asleep. They didn’t necessarily sleep on one side of the bed or the other, but more often than not, Bob tended to migrate towards the window, caged in between Hoosier and the wall and usually either plastered to one or the other.
Still, that didn’t stop him from jolting Bill awake at all odd hours of the night, reaching over him to either retrieve or put away a book or — god forbid — some sort of light.
Thinking about last night and, specifically, the heavy Dostoevsky that Bob had accidentally dropped on his bad leg when trying to put it back on the nightstand, Hoosier tugged on his hair a third time and got an incomprehensible mutter for his trouble.
“We were up at four in the Corps.”
“We’re in Indiana.”
Leckie said that a lot, now.
He hadn’t really, when they’d still lived in the tiny, cramped apartment just outside of Indianapolis that always had something broken. But, same as the bed, same as the new complaints that are never that serious, anymore, he said it now like it had begun to sink in. Like he’d realized that they actually were in Indiana: that they were in a house and weren’t going anywhere.

Remember the fallen
Today, July 21, would have been Captain Russell B. Rippetoe's 49th birthday. Captain Rippetoe gave his life while attempting to assist an Iraqi woman, where he and two other soldiers, Staff Sgt. Nino Livaudais and Spc. Ryan Long, were killed by a suicide bomber. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery. If you could, take a moment today to wish him a happy birthday and thank him for his sacrifice.

the text on his headstone reads:

hbo war fans: what is a line from one show that you feel belongs in a different show? i'll start:
original line: 'The only hope you have is to accept the fact that you're already dead. The sooner you accept that, the sooner you'll be able to function as a soldier is supposed to function: without mercy, without compassion, without remorse. All war depends upon it.' -Ronald Speirs, Band of Brothers
where i think it belongs: The Pacific (i feel like leckie would say something like that)

1,3,4,13 for the HBO war asks!
omg hi emily! thanks for asking!
the first hbo war show i watched was band of brothers. my parents told me about it and i fell in love with it!
3. i have read band of brothers and i'm currently reading generation kill. i do plan on reading with the old breed, helmet for my pillow, and masters of the air this summer.
4. my favorite bob character is eugene roe. i love his characterization and shane taylor's portrayal of him is just *chef's kiss* and also i love george luz because i too use humor as a coping mechanism lol
13. my favorite bob episode is a tie between bastogne and why we fight. they are both heart-wrenching and show how the guys have been affected by the war. i love babe and doc's relationship in bastogne, and i love how human liebgott is in why we fight.
