PM Dawn vs. KRS-One
Hadda be like 1992, I was rolling up to the sound factory, in Chelsea, like I normally do. The bouncers are BK dudes from around the way and let me in on the love! Turns out it’s a MTV function, Todd One/T-Money or some hosts of YMTVR bday party. I’m dancing solo cause that’s how I rolled to a lot of spots at that time. Then the show starts. Some say supercat performed before PM Dawn but I don’t remember any act before them. They got a lot of mtv play so they could’ve been a headliner. Anyway, they get one song in and and to my left I see a bunch of cats walking up the ramp to the stage. No bouncers or nothing around! I see KRS and Kenny Parker. Along with them I see Treach from NBN, he got a chain n machete! I’m like what the fuck is about to happen?! When I look back at the stage I see KRS snatching the mic from Prince B. It’s a bum rush now. I see cats swarm the DJ and stage. I’m facing the stage and to my left is a pylon of speakers on my right peripheral vision I see this wide dashiki fabric coming at me!! It’s Prince be in mid air from being tossed off stage, he was on the far right stage last I saw! For him to make to my side he must’ve gotten a strong ass push/shove/toss!!
I’m freakin out as the crowd around me moves, it’s me and the speakers behind me he’s headed straight for! Lucky I’m a skinny fast dude in good shape at the time. I narrowly dodged the impact. Prince B slams into this speakers and struggles to his feet. This is split seconds mind you. I don’t notice if he managed to get up or exit cause now KRS is doing “The South Bronx” and the energy is so hype that everyone is singing the hook!
That night I saw LONS rock the mic for the first time as well! What a time to be on the NYC hip hop scene. Not for the weak of heart cause it could go down at any moment. Had to stay aware of your surroundings and act like you know. This was all about a few words said in an article where Prince B calls out several rappers as possible frauds. Momma always said, if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all!
