Helly and the other innies are furious at this because it's literally just stealing the little time Mark S. has left while trying to kill him

we get to explore the Mark Scout and Helly R. dynamic (he doesn't know anything about her and certainly doesn't love her — but does she love him, or at least accept him, because she loves Mark S.? the way Mark S. accepts Helena because he loves Helly?)

what if making someone understand what you went through because of them was so hopeless that you had given up before ever trying. and what if you went to talk to them about something completely different and very important. and what if against all expectation they started with "but this comes first: I'm sorry for what I did to you". what if they called it by words you never dared to use. what if what you'd gone through mattered more to them than you'd ever been able to let it matter to you.

what if you never had to say a word to make it real to them. and what if it came when you weren't even expecting it.

mark scout absolutely does not see mark s as a person nearly as much as he should, a mistake that promises to cost him

but do you know. do you understand. the decade-old knot in my chest that loosened when the first message he recorded for Mark S contained nothing but an apology. nothing but genuine compassion. when Mark S didn't have to say a single word to make him see what he had done to him.

salty take: gemma is intelligent. she is a russian lit professor. she walked through doors and experienced the gaps in her memory and understood what that meant, and knows the door she's on the other side of is another severed precipice. she was rescued by her man soaked in blood who kissed every part of her face and called her his baby and clearly did everything in his power even years later to deliver her from hell. she does not think HER mark moved on, she knows a part of him is trapped in hell now just as she was, and it looks like it found a reason to stay. it is devastating enough without twisting it into her thinking he's got a wife and children.

something quite beautiful about helly wanting to believe that outie mark will reintegrate, because she loves mark. all of him. even the part that wants to take him away from her. in the same way that mark loves all of helly and helena. what if he’s, like, a total liar? what if he’s not?
