summer camp counselor here! especially when working with kids, water breaks for everyone are super important! my camp has more inside options, so it’s not as bad for me, but still! hydration and sunscreen are key! i like to make my campers drink water at the start of every activity, and sunscreen every 2-3 depending on if we go inside for some time. i also make sure they refill their water bottles by lunchtime every day.

Reading my own fanfiction is basically just a rollercoaster of emotional whiplash.

20% of the time: “Hold on. I wrote this? This is fire. This is emotionally devastating in the best way. This scene is dripping with tension. I’m a literary perfectionist. Someone give me a book deal.”

80% of the time: “Straight to jail. Immediate prison. Why is everyone’s breath hitching?. I used the word ‘gaze’ three times in one paragraph like I was possessed. Did I think 'his eyes darkened' was profound? Why is everyone clenching their jaws? Why is someone whispering 'their name like a prayer' again?? No one talks like this. What is this dialogue. Why are there so many weird metaphors and em-dashes…”

this is what i try to work into my star wars stories. kaia, my jedi oc? she totally leaves a half-eaten protein bar on the countertop and remembers it once it’s no longer edible. she cleans her boots after every mission, but nothing will ever get all of that gunk out of her boot treads. her lightsaber hilt has multiple scratches from where she’s dropped it, or it’s scraped against her rings, or something else. she paints the blasters she acquires later in her life, and the paint chips over time. she keeps saying she’ll touch up the paint, but there’s always something else to be done first.

i think all the best sci-fi is the sci-fi that looks dirty and lived in. like yeah we could have space travel and lasers but people are still gonna leave dirty cups by the side of their sleep pod and get weird alien mud stuck on their boots and put off fixing that faulty light on the lower deck of the spaceship. its relatable. its humanizing.

i swear to god people think i’m insane. i don’t like the struggling with hard problems. i don’t like the not understanding part. i like the numbers, the patterns, the way things align. i like this kind of math. the satisfying stuff that doesn’t necessarily change the world, but it’s still really cool nonetheless.
