A Burning Hill Song Analysis
here's an essay i wrote on Mitski's "A Burning Hill," i submitted this for a poetry project in highschool and thought i should post this here. i painted the shirt myself to resemble the "white button-down"
Tumblr media
In “A Burning Hill,” poet and songwriter Mitski describes her failed relationship and the self-healing she experienced afterward. Mitski’s use of metaphorical language and rhyme structure illuminates the hardships she experienced consequently from this relationship and her own destructive nature. She highlights the optimism that still remains despite this. The varying rhyme scheme reflects these conflicting feelings the speaker has.
The poem begins with the speaker sharing the clothes she is wearing. The “white button-down” symbolizes the start of a new beginning, starting fresh. White is associated with blankness or purity; this is what the speaker desires to have. The next line seems to be completely different from the first. She expresses her exhaustion and continues to share that in the third line. She further explains why she is so tired in the upcoming line, which cites a second person with the word “you.” Someone else, presumably a significant other, has drained her with these false promises they keep providing her. Lines 5-8 are the most meaningful in this poem, in which they mention the title with references to burning and fire. Each line is one whole extended metaphor describing the destruction the speaker has self-inflicted. The speaker describes herself as “the fire” (the destruction), “the forest” (her physical being) and the “witness watching it.” The witness is a metaphor for how the author is simultaneously watching this self-destruction happen to herself from an outsider’s point of view. She is self-aware, but does not do anything about it, as she states in the following line: “I stand in a valley watching it.” The stanza ends with the speaker stating her partner’s absence, seeming to have left her in her time of need and self-destruction.
The second stanza opens with repeating the first line of the poem. It is emphasized with the conjunction “so,” and instead is followed by a positive outlook; this marks the shift in tone of the poem. Consequently, the speaker declares that “at least'' she can “be neat,” which continues in the third line by stating how she can be “clean.” This again alludes to the white button-down, with the color white being symbolic of purity and being clean. The speaker desires structure in her life after the chaos she has previously had. This theme continues with the following line listing the monotonous tasks the speaker can do to maintain a sense of normalcy in her life. The speaker wants to keep up appearances and be a conventional and functioning member of society. The poem ends with the speaker repeating the same thing in the last two lines; this emphasizes and shows the certainty in her decision to heal and focus on the little things in life to become happy again. She uses the word “love,” which could mean that instead of this partner, she previously had she will now “love some littler things” in place of them. Additionally, these last two lines use euphonic sounds to express the peace that the speaker is trying to achieve.
The author uses a change in rhyme structure to represent the changes in the speaker’s life. The first stanza is mostly free-verse, corresponding with the chaos the author describes going on in her life. This changes in the second stanza where each line rhymes, which matches the author’s self-described desire to be “neat” and “clean.” She wishes for stability in her life after this failed relationship.
Overall, A Burning Hill conveys a beautiful message about self-healing and persevering despite adversity. The world does not end during a break-up; there are still things in life to keep living for.

EP Review: I'm Not Here to Make Friends - Roar (2012)
Tumblr media
Genre: indie pop, pop rock, chamber pop
Released: February 28, 2012
Length: 13:13 (4 tracks)
this ep means a lot to me! ive been listening to roar the band's music for a while, and i just love their unique sound playing around with combining different sounds that shouldnt work together, but do. i went more into detail with this one because i have a personal relationship with each song and im a bit biased with this one hehe
Tumblr media
Chinese Tattoo:
This is such a fun, upbeat sounding track that is the perfect intro to this EP. It's one of those songs where you have to listen to the lyrics to tell "Oh wait this isn't a happy song." It's very coming of age and introspective of someone growing up and learning new things that change their perspective on life. Someone who is relying on empty relationships to provide them some sense of comfort (which is a common theme of this EP).
"This isn't love but it still feels nice"
The constant drumbeat at the verse
“Never once stopping like a shark in its sleep Moving just to breathe”
is perfect because it expresses the urgency the speaker feels with the constant anxiety they feel fighting to stay alive, in which they use relationships to fill the hollowness they feel.
This isn't my favorite track on the EP, but it is very fun nevertheless :)
Flightless Bird:
This song is really good at using metaphorical language to get the idea across of someone who has lost their direction in life. From the title alone you can see someone who has lost their purpose in life. What's the point of giving a bird wings if it cannot fly?
The first verse has a lofi sound using minimal instruments, which shifts before the next verse. It brings out this beautiful melody that builds with the percussion bringing it all together.
When it reaches the next verse the singer has this very sing-songy tone that's very dreamlike, exaggerating the first line.
"Replaying the gory scene incessantly Forgot the safe word was "imaginary" Forgot about my poor selective memory Feeling like a fat kid at the beach who's still weighing The pros and cons of weak bulimic teeth"
I think the last two lines of this verse are so clever in how the artist provides two different meanings for the word "weighing," weighing in the literal sense and then weighing as in contemplating a choice. Like some sick and twisted pun.
"You tell yourself that this is for the best"
This line repeats over and over again at the end, showing how the speaker has given up and is trying to accept his unfulfilled life.
Poor Grammar:
This was the song that got me into ROAR! The intro is SO good, the overlapped synthesizers give the illusion of a choir singing, and then there's the percussion and fun bass in the background. Throughout the entire song I think the bass is my favorite part.
This following single line is what got me through high school:
"This life is punctuated like a texting session Between two overheated, insecure teens"
The desperation from the speaker trying to repair this failing relationship with someone who is putting no effort to do so on their end hits so hard.
I love how he enunciates each syllable on these lines
"I can't see you when I need to"
In this particular line ROAR uses drums to emphasize each word here.
"Premeditated like some sick joke"
For this line the buildup on the melody completely stops, showing how heartbroken the speaker feels from being stood up by his partner.
The outro is stunning, it has the overlapped synthesizers return and makes me feel like I'm ascending up to heaven.
The Comfort Of A Laugh Track:
This is my favorite song on this EP by far. The title alone describes how lonely the speaker is that they take comfort from a laugh track playing because it tricks them into thinking that they aren't alone.
The lyrics discuss the speaker's struggles with forming connections with others because they keep pushing everyone away. It describes the alienation one feels from not learning how to talk to others. Like there's some secret language everyone learned but you, and you're trying your best to keep up with it.
"Why is it so hard to speak To people I don't know? Is it something that you learn When constantly alone?"
Musically there are just so many good parts. My favorite part of songs is when they utilize phrasing, which helps emphasize different lines and shows their impact. Such as the buildup that starts at
“If you could only see me now”
and then how it gets louder and louder and suddenly Roar is using every single instrument together for one line:
“Where I could be all you would need”
This emphasizes how important this line is to show the desperation the speaker has in wanting to connect to his partner. On a side note, the riff that plays directly after that line is my favorite ever.
At 2:57 it’s pure instrumental and it’s beautiful. The different sounds create such a funky feel with an almost haunting sound like ghosts in the background.

Ranking:
The Comfort Of A Laugh Track
Poor Grammar
Flightless Bird
Chinese Tattoo
basically the tracklist order but backwards ;)

Single Review: Procraaa - AYU OKUDA (2025)
youtube
Genre: j-pop, breakcore, idm
Released: January 8, 2025
Length: 2:04
I found this song through my YouTube recommendations. It's a single from a J-Pop idol named Okuda Ayu from the group SWEET STUDY.
Her voice is very soft, which is a nice mix with the breakcore elements. It's something I've never heard before from a J-Pop idol. The song is very recent, so I can't find shit on any translations. So don't ask me what the song is about I don't know lol
You can also listen to this song on Spotify! I just don't really like Spotify links, so I used YouTube instead ;)

EP Review: Lonely in Gorgeous - Tommy february6 (2005)
Tumblr media
Genre: synthpop, j-pop, electropop
Released: November 30, 2005
Length: 16:51 (4 tracks)
Given my love for all things cute, I'm surprised myself that I haven't really listened to anything by Tommy february6. I've heard I ONLY WANT TO BE WITH YOU, and snippets of Lonely in Gorgeous (the track) on TikTok, but otherwise I haven't listened to her.
It was an absolute treat listening to this EP, right away I was surprised by the 80's music influences, I felt like I was listening to some 80's classics and was reminded that this was a Japanese artist every time she sang. The lyrics are so girly and cute! Despite the cuteness of it all there is still a mature image that remains.
Here are my thoughts on the individual tracks below!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lonely in Gorgeous:
As I mentioned before I've only heard snippets of this song on TikTok, but god does the full song live up! I do feel like the song gets a bit repetitive at some points, but otherwise it's a fun listen.
Is this feeling love?:
This track feels a bit slower than the others on this EP. This gives off the vibes of someone obsessively in love with someone. I'm not complaining though! It seems from the lyrics that it's about unrequited love with someone who is already in a relationship.
E-mail more:
This is by far my favorite. Desperate yearner music you will forever be my favorite <3. The intro is so fun and makes me think of disco music. It makes me want to get up and boogie! This song is so cute, and I can't get enough of the instrumentals. The whole song being about e-mailing really dates when this EP was made, which makes me fall in love with this track even more for that early 2000s nostalgia.
"I'm waiting your e-mail any time At my strawberry pop-station Give me your love words, send to me Give me your love inspiration"
I love the nonsensical lyrics. This is what pop music is all about!
Lonely in Gorgeous - instrumental:
Normally I don't care for listening to instrumentals (ahem instrumental tracks put onto K-Pop albums), but I loved just listening to the instrumental of this one because it is just so fun sounding! It just feels so nostalgic, and I'm glad I can fully appreciate the beats of Lonely in Gorgeous without focusing on the lyrics.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Overall, this was a very fun listen, and I'll definitely be checking out her other music soon :3. I would recommend this EP to anyone who loves pink glitter gel pen k-pop. Tomoko Kawase's image is adorable and chic, and I aspire to be like her.

The way most autism literature describes "literal interpretation" is often not at all similar to how I experience it. Teenage me even thought I couldn't be autistic because I've always been able to learn metaphors easily.
In fact, I love wordplay of all kinds. Teenage me was fascinated to learn all the types of figurative language there are in poetry and literature.
But paperwork and questionnaires are hard, because there's so much they don't state clearly. Or they don't leave room for enough nuance.
"List all the jobs you've had, with start and end dates." What if I don't remember the exact day or month? Is the year enough?
"Have you been suffering from blurred vision?" Well, if I take off my glasses the whole world is blurred, but I'm fairly sure that's not what the intake form at the optometrist is asking.
Or the infamous (and infuriatingly stereotypical) "Would you rather go to a library or a party?" What sort of party? Where? Who's there? I work at a library. Am I currently at the library for work or pleasure? Does it have a good collection?
It's not common figures of speech that confound me. It's ambiguity, in situations that aren't supposed to be ambiguous.
