the craziest thing about this 1983 circus draft business is that teddy is a character that had apparently already existed in the raggedy ann musical. damn. RARE does it again.

Question,
Recently I saw an ask blog question about if General D is still going to have pedophilia tendencies and what I could gather from that was...
"We're keeping the pedophilia but putting it on the down low"
You can most definitely write a villain-like character without pedophilia. Personally, there are different ways you could go at this script to make it less disgusting. Also, it rubs me at least the wrong way since Marcella was an actual person.
That is not what I said, and not what I intended. We're removing the pedophilic undertones, keeping the cannibalistic and power-hungry undertones. He is a military general, so of course he is power-hungry, but that has nothing to do with the sexual or predatory undertones in the original script. He doesn't just want power over Marcella either; he wants power over her pets, Mommy, Raggedy Ann, and the rest of the dolls. He wants total control over the universe. That's always been a part of the text and it always will be. Nowhere in the script (anymore) is it implied that he wants Marcella as his bride/queen.
Also, while Marcella was a real person, this Marcella is not the real Marcella. This is a character who shares her name, and besides that, along with her illness, there are no other similarities. She is not the same person. This has been done throughout the history of the franchise; even Johnny Gruelle himself did it. Gibson tried to make it clear along with the Gruelle family that most depictions of Marcella ought to be separated from who she was in life.
I hope this clears up some confusion. We have put a lot of attention into making a script which won't endanger it's performers, both children and adults. Thanks for the ask.

Hello!
I've been looking at your blog for a bit and it is just amazing how much people have come together to revive a musical all the way in the 80s!
Just a couple questions if you don't mind:
1#: If you and the rest of the R.A.R.E group do manage to get the musical back on Broadway, I'm guessing there's gonna be a few edits in the script like General D hitting on Marcella and the racial stuff with the Panda? Because...yeah, it's an old musical.
2#: Out of curiosity, if and when the musical comes back to Broadway, will other theatre schools be able to do it? I'm talking for pantomimes, plays, stuff like that. (I live all the way in the UK, and it's boring over here 😭)
Oh god haha this show was not designed for Broadway and we hope it never gets quite that far again. Some shows are better when they don't try to appeal to Broadway audiences and that's ok! Arguably, that was this show's downfall! Broadway doesn't necessarily measure success. We are, however, aiming for a large-scale production somewhere else with a great theatre scene, so don't fret. And yes! We've already changed plenty areas of the script that wouldn't (and shouldn't) fly today. As for the General, it's definitely been toned down and the direct references to anything sexual have been removed. We decided to keep the other undertones of cannibalism and overall control because.... like... he's literally death. he's kind of the grossest and most evil villain to exist. It's also a bit empowering for Marcella to stand up to those kinds of things. Equally as gross baddies do exist in the real world too! As for Panda, they've been replaced with a completely new character, Teddy, a vaguely European (but commonly British) bear. We put a lot of time and care into making sure that they fit within the story both narratively and in a way that blends well with Gibson's writing. They are dorky and loveable with no cannon design, and can be played by any gender, use any pronouns, and display any culture (or none in particular if you don't have the cast for it!). I love them so much and I'm so excited to see what people do with the role.
Our end goal is granting licensing rights to schools, community theatres, and regional theatres across the U.S.! We would absolutely love for the show to be available in other countries, but that is a bit tricky to work out under U.S. copyright law and with the existing licensing. Of course, if there is enough demand, we will certainly try!!! Thank you for the questions!
