The term “masterpiece” originally and traditionally meant a piece of work that an apprentice or other aspiring craftsman created to show off to his master or the town’s guild. So naturally, it was intended to be the best fucking thing that you could make, demonstrating just how fucking good you are at what you’re making - 100% to flex your skills. And if it was approved, the applicant was accepted as a member of the guild and could now call himself a master, and work in this craft in this city.

So the next time you’re looking at The One Great Thing you made and think “this is it, my masterpiece, I have peaked, it’s all downhill from here”, consider looking it the other way: Making your masterpiece means you’re only getting started.

I'm not even like deaf or hoh but if you're adding subtitles to something I think you should always transcribe foreign languages too. None of that [Speaks Spanish] shit. You don't need to translate it to english. But you need to at least give the option for a deaf person to read it and understand it themselves. I don't care if it's not important to the plot. I don't care if it's just them saying like Okay or Damn or whatever the fuck. Write it down

if you want people to be honest with you when you do something that makes them uncomfortable or want people to tell you when they're upset with you, then you have to

make yourself a safe person to talk to. not just physically, but emotionally. obviously don't threaten suicide, but like. remember that they're telling you because they want to keep the relationship. remember that them telling you is better than them keeping it a secret. let them know you're listening, apologize, and let them know you'll work on it. if it's a small thing (eating your roommate's snacks, using a slur you can reclaim that makes them uncomfortable in their presence), you can leave it there. if it's a bigger thing, talk to them about it calmly, and help them with figuring out a solution. remember, they're nervous about this too. if you need a break from the conversation, tell them directly, let them know you'll be back. all in all, be mature about it, keep your own guilt/shame/rejection sensitivity in check, and treat this as a mutual trust building activity, rather than a trial

know when someone is being unreasonable. some people want you to just stop being yourself, or to make yourself small, or to just stop existing in ways that inconvenience them. for example, i used to know someone who got really embarrassed when i ticced in public. she'd talk me about it and tell me i had to go hide in the bathroom whenever i felt a tic coming on. she was perfectly calm, using the "you're making me uncomfortable" format, but like, that's obviously an unreasonable ask for someone with brain damage. ultimately the solution was me not hanging out with her anymore. it's not going to be as obvious as that all the time, but some people will use the "i'm uncomfortable" thing for things that are actually perfectly fine for you to keep doing. sometimes preserving the relationship isn't an option.

really i think the key difference between david tennant and peter capaldi as fans of the show they were in is that david tennant's childhood obsession shows through when he comes face to face with elisabeth sladen in school reunion with all the joy of someone who was in love with the show as a kid in the 70s. you know, like a normal person. (by doctor who standards.) whereas peter capaldi's childhood obsession shows through when he comes face to face with creepy mummy-like cybermen based off a partly-lost william hartnell serial which is deeply deeply disturbing on a psychological level with all the glee of someone who was disturbed on a psychological level by the show as a kid in the 60s

If I somehow ended up as showrunner for Doctor Who I would start my series off with the Doctor tumbling out of the Tardis, played by an actor who fans have been clamoring for years to get a chance at the role. Some big name star, ideally one with a fan hashtag.

The I'd have him look in a mirror, shout "oh god I'm hideous!!", and run back into the tardis. You'd hear a single loud gunshot, 5 seconds of silence, and then a complete nobody of a newbie walks out, pats her face, and goes "oh much better", then credits roll
