Excerpt from the notes of Aqua's in-house medical doctor: "The Alpha markings that appeared on the patient's skin after the use of the Blue Orb do not appear to be scarring of any kind. Rather, microscopic analysis suggests that they are closer to tattoos and are a series of small structures embedded just underneath the skin. The function of these structures is unknown; Admin Matt has speculated that they may serve as a form of energy storage, though they do not resemble any form of storage he or I are familiar with. Their arrangement seems reminiscent but not directly parallel to the bioluminescent markings that Kyogre has in its active state. The patient has stated his counterpart's (see file 3B) Omega markings glowed after the Mt. Chimney incident (see file 3B.3) and slowly faded over the course of several hours. He described them as, quote, "looking like a freshly cracked glowstick". The patient's own markings have exhibited no luminescence at any point, nor any indication of fading over time. Although the patient has expressed interest in learning more, testing on this subject will likely prove difficult now that the Blue Orb is no longer in our possession."

A dislike of surprises is--oddly enough--something the two of them could hypothetically agree on, and Maxie has had more than their fill of unwanted surprises today. The voice is one that they don't recognize, which doesn't bode well for a Magma allegiance. A flashlight sweeps over them before they can study the silhouette in the dim lighting, and their eyes narrow against the sudden light.

Then the person turns it back on himself and confirms Maxie's suspicions, illuminating the casual uniform of an Aqua grunt. Not the outcome they were hoping for, all things considered, though perhaps at least preferable to the cops--or worse, the Champion himself.

They relax marginally when Ethan clarifies his intent. The pokeball stays in their hand, but it's a pure bluff to ease their suspicion of him. They'd won their battle against Archie only by a thread. Their team is in no condition to fight; that doesn't mean they're fool enough to let on.

"Your leadership went that way, after Groudon. I won't stop you." Maxie musters up their best authoritative voice as they attempt to point further down the chamber. The motion sends a spasm of pain through them.

"Doubtless they need--" They mostly manage to suppress the hiss, but they can't stop the grimace that passes over their features. "--all the help they can get."

Ethan was a naturally curious person, but somewhat paradoxically he wasn’t a very big fan of surprises. Surprises meant a lack of control over the situation, and for someone like him that was so focused on being organized and having every step of the way planned out in advance, that made them a major source of anxiety. Because of that, when he was told about an emergency at Mt. Chimney, he felt an intense sense of dread and knew that nothing good would come out of it.

It was as if the place had been torn to shreds. Ethan wasn't very familiar with the original state of the Magma base, so he could only assume how much damage Groudon caused on its way out as he made his way through its underground chambers, searching for people that could’ve gotten hurt in the struggle. The leaders of Team Aqua had departed to deal with the bigger threat at hand, so he and a few other grunts had been tasked with cleaning up the mess in the meantime.

It was then that he found someone struggling to stand upright, looking like they had sustained far more serious injuries than the others. A familiar face.

And, assuming by the fact that they already had a Pokéball in hand, someone that wasn’t very happy to know that they weren’t alone. Right, he knows how to deal with agitated Pokémon in need of help, but people are a different matter, aren’t they? Especially when the person in question happened to be a really big deal.

“Hello? Can you hear me?” He pointed a flashlight towards himself so that Maxie could easily see him in the dark, approaching slowly and stopping a couple meters away so as to respect the other’s personal space. “I don’t mean any harm, so if we could, uh, not fight right now, that would be pretty great!”

DRABBLE set POST-Pyroclasm.

Working on the Sky Pillar is not a job without its perils. It positively makes Magma's old headquarters look safe and OSHA approved, in Archie's opinion; another reason to be glad he's not working there every day. In between the rickety ladders, the partially collapsed floors, and the raging currents that surround every bit of the rocky outcropping, it's an accident waiting to happen. He's not surprised when it does; he's not even that surprised that it's Maxie, honestly. He's just glad that it happens while he's visiting, because there's no one better to navigate the tempestuous waters than him.

Jumping in is second nature to him, and his sharpedo Riptide is out before he even hits the surface. The water's force is far stronger than what he's accustomed to in Lilycove, but he trusts the shark to keep him safe. Finding Maxie is another matter. Even in broad daylight, light has a hard time penetrating more than a few feet, and the rush of water past his eyes makes it even harder to see. He's reliant on his sharpedo there too, urging him in the direction where Maxie had fallen and letting him know they're looking for a drowning person with a couple of precise taps on his fins.

It feels like it takes ages. Maxie's form doesn't come into focus until Rip is almost on top of them. Archie locks one arm around their waist and grips the sharpedo's fin with the other. Rip jets back to the surface, where Tabitha and Matt are waiting to help pull them out of the water.

Once they're both on the rocks, Archie immediately reaches for their wrist for a pulse. He can't find it and moves two fingers to under their jawline, yelling for Matt to get the defibrillator from the research vessel.

It ends up being a little hasty. Seconds later he feels the faint fluttering at their jugular, and Maxie coughs up a lungful of seawater. The bedraggled redhead reaches up with one hand to loosely grasp Archie's wrist. "I'm alright," they rasp. "No need for CPR. I'm--" they pause to cough again, expelling more salt-- "rather partial to not having my ribs broken today."

Archie huffs a sigh of relief, changing his position to help Maxie sit up. "Oh, you don't even know for sure I would've broken any ribs!" His lips quirk as he thumps them on the back. "We've got a first aid kit on the ship, after all. Barring that, Ray." "I think Ray might be worse than broken ribs." Their voice is hoarse, but they chuckle even though it makes them wince. "Straight electrocution is not what I'd consider favorable either." Archie laughs boisterously, feeling some of the tension he'd acquired starting to dissipate. "Aye, well, lucky you started coughing then, huh." "Indeed." Maxie reaches up to comb some of their wet hair out of their eyes. "What is this, the third time you've saved my life? I'm starting to feel like I rather owe you." "Yeah, you do," Archie says. "Which is why yer gonna stay on the boat for the rest of the day, rest up, and not fuss about it. Cause you owe me."

Archie barely resists rolling his eyes. He's not sure if the guy is like this with everyone, or if it's someone else who read the news and felt like taking a swing at him... Though usually in the latter case, the swing was purely verbal, and tended to shrivel up when he turned his full attentions to them. This guy, though... strikes him as willing to go a lot further than just verbal.

At least he seems just generally disagreeable. Archie's pretty sure he prefers that over finding someone with a bone to pick about Hoenn all the way in Alola.

Either way... Definitely scamp. Big scamp, but scamp nonetheless.

"Alright, alright, hold yer horseas," he says, holding up his hands and taking a step back. "I ain't lookin' for a tourist guide, don't worry. I'm goin'."

Time to head further on down the beach and find those damn corsola he's looking for. Whether that's suitably off the guy's turf, he has no idea.

...scamp. Really. Guzma glares at the other with a clearly unimpressed expressions, his grunts sharing a quick confused glance.

"Do I look like some tourist guide, pal?" the Skull leader snaps, both hands on his hips as he looks at the other up and down before continuing "How 'bout this. I'm sure you'll find plenty.. away from us. Bug off!"

Despite their respective legendaries being dormant again, both Archie and Maxie still have dreams occasionally. Oceans trapped under endless rock. Swaths of ice that burn their feet. Underwater eruptions too hot to be cooled.

Both of them have decided to keep these dreams to themselves, for the moment.

Archie glances the other over more thoroughly. The idea of glasses makes him chuckle, barely more than a huff of air. "Glasses ain't really my style, scamp." One could say he knows from experience, though Maxie's thick safety frames are hardly a metric for aesthetic appeal.

It's not that he's not aware of the obvious challenge here, but he's not exactly been keeping up with battling lately, and he really isn't looking to start now. And if the man wants to intimidate him into it, well... It's not that Archie can't be scared, but he finds he's less fussed by people after facing down the forces of earth and sea.

"Say, you wouldn't have happened to see any corsola 'round these parts, have ya? If not, I'll be outta your hair."

To say that Groudon's revival wasn't going to plan was a bit of an understatement. Or rather--the awakening had gone just as planned. It was everything afterward that had been the problem.

It had proved wholly resistant to any attempts to command it. Groudon had also revealed a startling ability to move much faster than any of them had anticipated, discovered when it made use of one of its enormous, clawed hands to throw Maxie bodily into the cave walls. Everyone else was ignored as it focused its attentions on burrowing its way out of Mt. Chimney.

Archie had spared a moment to check if Maxie was even still alive. Upon finding them still conscious enough to deliriously insist on their ability to help, he'd pushed them back to the ground, told them to stay put, and taken the admins to go after the titan.

It takes them a few minutes to work through the pain enough to sit upright. They'd taken the brunt of the hit with their left side, judging by the pulsing in their shoulder. Standing up was proving to be more of a challenge, but they'll be damned if they're still going to be on the ground by the time some of the grunts arrive.

...Though judging by the sound of footsteps echoing down the connecting chamber, it appears they might, in fact, be damned. Maxie tenses and retrieves a pokeball from their pockets with their good hand. They'd rather have their mightyena at their side, just in case.
