AUTOPSY REPORT 001β€”in praise of bacchus
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
DATE OF DEATH: august 20th, 1996
a beautifully tragic song, filled with moody rainy streets and the statue of liberty herself. come with me as i dissect type o negative's discography in all it's doom & gloom glory, one drop of blood after the other.
hey bacchus she hates me hey bacchus she hates me
bacchus is the roman god of wine, partying, and fertility. steele is calling on this god, possibly asking for help? for forgiveness? we know he drank wine a lot on stage. perhaps "she" is angry at him for drinking? "she hates me," a subtle nod to karloff's line in the bride of frankenstein. the creature's reaction to his companion rejecting him. this is clear, steele is telling us that his lover now hates him and is confiding in the roman god.
the street lamps light a wet old red hook road a furry vino tinted slave molten oil painted brooklyn bridge (cobblestone grave)
red hook road is in brooklyn (where steele is from, as most of you know.) it's raining out, hence why it's wet. the brooklyn bridge can be seen as well as the statue of liberty (which will be brought up later, keep in mind.) most of these are self explanatory, but "a furry vino tinted slave" had puzzled me for the longest time. steele has said in an interview, "so vino meaning wine, and furry being under the influence of alcohol." he's a slave to his emotions. (from III literature issue #12, i highly recommend reading it. he goes into more depth than i ever could.) cobblestone grave? in some streets in brooklyn are made of cobblestone. that's what it is to himβ€”he's drunk, she's angry, he's stumbled out onto rainy red hook road, gazing at the brooklyn bridge. that's his grave.
a lonely blue girl guards the river bed she shakes her brown torch at the tide on pier six we'd creep and count the cracks (side by side, see, we're counting cracks)
this "lonely blue girl" is the statue of liberty, who can be seen from red hook road. in his drunken state he may be convinced she is shaking her torch. projecting what his lover feels, shaking her own torch at him. him being on pier six makes perfect sense, as you can see the aforementioned brooklyn bridge and statue of liberty here. the pier looks like to be made out of concrete instead of wooden boards. it's cracked and old like red hook road. he's so distraught, he's slowly creeping around and counting the cracks in the broken concrete like the couple used to do during happier times.
your mom was out wearing herself inside i'll stop the train to say hello a used boyfriend's just bought her this new car (i said i know)
our narrator is visiting the lover's mom's house. asking for her, the mother probably tells him her daughter is not home nor does she want to see him.
"i'll stop the train to say hello" is one of my favorite lyrics ever. so simple, yet so devastating. to me, he's stopping one of the subway trains because he decides to take his life, jumping in front of it.
his lover would be aware of his distress hearing about the incident, hence him saying "hello." she would finally be aware of the anguish she put him through. unfortunately, he's also bought her a new car. he's feeling used about it, she does not even care about him. she only cares about what he can buy her.
she said burn together burn we'll burn together
if they chose to stay together, they'll burn each other. they aren't good for one another and will lead to both of their destruction.
now don't believe she'll never leave again i can't forget the words she said way back when
she's done this before and he knows. she keeps reassuring him that she won't leave. but he knows it's a lie. it's a viscous cycle; she is unfaithful, he gets drunk trying to self medicate, she's upset over this fact, so she cheats again, he drinks again.
dirai di, sincto sin, dominai, requiem
here's where things get a little more tricky because people believe there are different phrases said here*. we will never know because these lyrics are not included in any of the official versions, but steele is clearly chanting it at the end. i'd like to note, steele would also make up his own language and words. this could mean totally different than what a latin translation has to say. i have two different views on this chant. my original translation was "i asked god to let my lady rest." which in hindsight, does not make the most sense. this seems to be more vengeful, like we've seen in slow, deep and hard. why would he be forgiving her now after what she's put him through? here's my second, more darker take, "tell god (dirai di) i'm sorry (sincto sin) for the rest of my lady (dominai, requiem)." the drunken man has killed his lover (physically, emotionally, or both) and is now telling god (bacchus?) that he's regretted his actions and how guilt-ridden he is. *if you'd like to hear different views on it, i recommend checking out the type o negative subreddit and fenton's very helpful breakdown.

☠︎︎ CAUSE OF DEATH: in praise of bacchus is a very unique song in type o negative's discography. october rust is sensually rich and dedicated to women. yesβ€”red water (christmas mourning), die with me, and burnt flowers fallen also hail from this album with darker tones. but it's nothing like this. in praise of bacchus feels as if it is a lost song from world coming down, it's a precursor for where this story is headed. i'd like to expand on this in a later post, in praise of bacchus is like the sequel to slow, deep and hard. the narrator is drunk on bottles of wine after discovering his lover has been unfaithful. when he visits her house, her mom answers the door and tells him she isn't home and wants nothing to do with him. he didn't have any other choice than to stumble to red hook road. he finds himself stuck in the rain out on pier 6. the only one he can turn to is bacchus; the one who put him here in the first place. she just wanted him for material gain. would jumping in front of the train make her realize? would staying in this relationship just cause a deeper burn? all he can do now is beg for her forgiveness for what he's done...even if he's not in the wrong. ⚠︎ DISCLAIMER: when i analyze these songs i am doing it from a poetic lyrical analysis view. i take into account what peter steele has said in interviews, his songs, and actions as i believe it can provide a deeper understanding. though, i also take into account that these lyrics were not completely based on his life. i am writing about the narrator, not the author. my writing is never intended to be disrespectful, as these songs have impacted me in a way i could never truly put into words.
☣︎.⋆ thank you for reading, stay negative ! πŸ–€βŠπŸ’š
