Just so you know, if you ever told your clique (Ace, Deuce, Epel, Jack, and maybe Sebek) that you got yourself a boyfriend in NRC that's just some random NPC, chaos would erupt very quickly. They'd be the quickest to snitch to their dorm and vice dorm leaders alike about the newly acquired information too.

Riddle is shocked to his core and rendered speechless because, great sevens, he thought he had all the time in the world to court you in the most perfect way possible he could think of, and then some rando decides he can just ruin it??

Trey has this almost condescending look on his face, which he tries to hide behind a hand, but the look seems to say your current boyfriend doesn't deserve you and someone else (clearly him) is more suited for you.

Cater is annoyed he didn't catch wind of your relationship sooner because if he had, he would've tried to break you guys up sooner or at least created obstacles so such a disaster would never occur in the first place.

Ace just shouts a big "what⁉️" because he's jealous that some random boy managed to weasel his way into your life and get the honor of being your boyfriend, even though Ace has been stuck to you like glue since day one.

Deuce goes quiet, has a blank look on his face from the shock, and tries to recall any instances where it'd seem you were getting too close to another boy and trying to figure out his identity.

"Oh no--it’s happening again."

"What’s happening again?"

"The prefect--they're-"

"What, Ace? Spit it out!"

Ace looked at Deuce with wide, panicked eyes.

"They're obsessed with pickup lines again..."

~ In which shrimpy recalls their old love of pick up lines—now it’s a full frontal assault on the Heartslabyul student they love most ~

Riddle:

"You're not close enough to the garden for me to tell you the secret, you silly billy!"

"For my dignity and yours, please never call me a 'silly billy' again," Riddle sighs as you drag him from the Heartslabyul dorm to the gardens. "Okay, we're here. What's your big secret prefect?"

"Come closer," you say in a hushed voice. He reluctantly does so, a pink hue appearing on his cheeks. "If you and I had a garden, I'd put your tulips and my tulips together."

"Okay?" Riddle says confused. For a moment, you think you'd been cruelly rejected--Riddle's face changes, though, and you realize it just took him a minute to realize you'd used a pickup line on him. "P-Prefect!"

"Yes Riddle?"

"That... that is... did you seriously bring me out here just to tell me that?" He stutters, face entirely red. In your head, you hear Floyd calling Riddle 'goldfishie' and giggle to yourself.

"Not at all. I have plenty more to say, actually."

Riddle crosses his arms, giving you a look that was probably meant to be a glare, but instead looked rather nervous.

"If you and I were flowers, I'd want us to have a budding romance."

Riddle clears his throat. "What a strange thing to say..."

"And if we were flowers, do you know what I'd do if you wanted a kiss? I'd plant one on you."

"So we're making puns then?" He says, voice shaky. "Fine. I... I lily like you--no, that's stupid." He shakes his head. You laugh.

"They're pick up lines, sweet pea. Flower-based, hence the garden," you gesture around you. "You know... roses are red, violets are blue, I'm glad I came to Twisted Wonderland because I got to meet you."

"O-Oh..."

Riddle knows he’s being dry. He knows it--he can’t help it, he’s too flustered for words. Luckily, you’re having no such problem, because you continue to flatter him with sweet little lines.

"If I planted a rose for every time you crossed my mind, I'd have garden that would put the Queen's to shame."

"Don't say that!" Riddle huffed. "How impolite."

"Something tells me she's not offended, since she's… um… deceased and all," you reply. Riddle silently bristles at your words.

"I've finally thought of a line for you!" He says in a nagging tone, as if he were lecturing you. "But you have to come with me. Now."

"Oh, okay... am I in trouble?"

"What?"

He looks offended. You can’t help but laugh at his theatrical expressions.

"You sound mad."

“Mad? Of course I'm not--hush!"

"Okay..."

Riddle guides you inside the Heartslabyul dorm, right into the kitchens. He sits you down on a barstool and goes to find a kettle, along with a box of tea. He places both in front of you and folds his hand like he's about to give a business proposition.

"I think you're pre-tea cute. Would you like to join me for a cup of tea?" He asks.

His face was still red. It was literally the most adorable line anyone's ever said to you.

"How flir-tea," you giggle. "It would be my pleasure, sweet pea."

Trey:

"Have you been sitting in all that sugar you bake with, Trey? Because you've got a sweet butt."

*Crash*

Trey drops the baking in his hand, looking mortified at your line. Getting the impression that he hated it, you back up a bit.

"Sorry, too forward? Have you been laying in sugar, sweetheart? Because you're looking pretty sweet. Is that better?" You say apologetically. Trey snaps out of his shock.

"You... think my butt is sweet?" He asks quietly, adjusting his glasses as he processes the statement. "Thank you?"

"I think all of you is sweet, really," you wave off. "I can tell your parents were bakers--they'd have to be to make a cutie pie like you."

"Now I know you're up to something," Trey replies, placing the fallen baking sheet on the counter before walking over to ruffling your hair. "Did Ace and Deuce put you up to this?"

"Are you bread? Because you're the loaf of my life."

"I don't know I'm scared of you or attracted to you right now," he admits quite bluntly, following that up with a humble chuckle. "Are you trying to seduce me into baking you cookies or something?"

"I don't know about cookies, but you and I would bake a great couple."

"You're a little too quick at coming up with those lines..."

You laugh. "I have experience. I used to love pick up lines when I was younger--not necessarily having them used on me or anything, I just think they're neat. Speaking of neat, are you a calligrapher? Because you're the write one for me."

Trey chuckles. You continue.

"Did you just come out of the oven? Because you're hot."

"I hope you're always in my life," He says suddenly. "Your personality brings so much color into my world that I feel as if everything would be so greyscale and dull without you..."

He says it as if he's talking to himself, but you give him a look of awe. When he notices, and he gives you a dorky little tilt of his head. "What is it?"

"That... was the nicest thing I think anyone has ever said to me," you say, hand placed over your melting heart. "Can we skip the pick up line phase and go on a date now?"

It was rare to see Trey with such energized joy, as opposed to his typical tame smile. "I would love to. Perhaps a baking date? I'd love to bake something for those sweet lips that keep giving me sweet words--you know, to return the favor."

"Hmmm, that'll do, though... Trey?"

"Yeah?"

"If you really want something sweet, there's plenty of sugar for you right here."

You tap your lips playfully, not expecting him to take your line too seriously. You're surprised when he laughs and takes a step closer to you, cupping your face.

"I can't think of anything else I'd rather taste."

Cater:

"Wow Cater, you must be a really good texter, because you're just my type."

Cater looks up at you in surprise.

"Just your type, hm? Oh, aren't you just the cutest!"

"I learned from the best," you reply with a wink, before sitting closer to him. "Are you wifi? Because I'm feeling a connection."

"Are you hitting on me?"

"I'm trying to."

At the news, Cater beams--before you know it, he's sitting up and typing frantically in his phone, pulling up a list of pick up lines to fire back at you.

"Are you a search engine? Because you've got everything I'm searching for." He says. You playfully scowl at him.

"Hey, you can't use your phone! That's cheating!"

"Oh, so we're playing by rules now?"

"Yeah," you say. "It's a game now. I'll even give us stakes--if you win I'll give you a kiss, if I win you’ll have to kiss me. Wanna play?"

Cater whistles. "That was smooth. Alright--I'll put my phone away this time," he says. Once his phone is in his pocket, he leans closer to you. "Can I borrow a kiss? I promise I'll give it back."

"Your lips look lonely, would they like to meet mine?"

"I hear kissing is a love language--wanna have a conversatio-"

"Oh great seven..."

You and Cater both jump a little, spinning around to find Ace giving you both a disgusted look.

"Can't either of you think of a pick up line that doesn't involve smooching? Just take it to another room and get it over with, yeesh..."

Cater flushes red. You fear you're no better at hiding your embarrassment. Ace snickers at the sudden change of mood.

"Fine, fine... delay the inevitable. I'll go hide somewhere before I have to bear witness to any more of this disgusting pining. Bunch of weirdos..."

Exchanging eye contact with Cater after that was somewhat of a challenge. Finally, his bright green eyes meet yours, and the next words out of his lips come as a pleasant surprise.

"Do you want to... follow his advice?"

You smile, and he matches your expression. "Sure, I'll give you a kiss. If you don't like it, feel free to return it."

"Oh you--stop with the lines, would you?" He laughs, grabbing the sides of your face and pulling you in for a sweet kiss. "There, you're the winner of this match."

"This match, implying there will be more?"

"After this? I can't imagine wanting these games to stop-"

"FOR THE LOVE OF SEVEN," you hear Ace yell. "GET A ROOM!"

You and Cater exchanged a look. This time, all previous embarrassment was gone.

"Wanna go use cheesy pick up lines in front of Ace?" you suggest. Cater grabs your hand and threads his fingers with yours, grinning.

"Let's go."

Deuce:

"The weather today reminded me of you," you suddenly tell Deuce in the middle of a study session. His brows are furrowed as he glares at his notes, clearly unable to focus any longer lest he stress himself out.

He glances at you in relief, eager to take a break from all that thinking.

"The weather? Of me?"

"Yeah," you say. "You're both hot."

"Oh."

He says it casually at first, and you watch him raise a hand to his forehead, checking his temperature. He gets the line a few seconds later, and you watch his face turn beet red. "Oh! Oh? O-Oh, I..."

"Hey Deuce?"

"Y-Yeah?"

"I can't taste my lips," you say thoughtfully. "Shame... would you taste them for me?"

Deuce was speechless. Just... just what were you up to?

"Too forward?" You guess, reading his expression. "Sorry love. How's this one--can I follow you back to your dorm? I've always been told to follow my dreams."

"I'm... your dream?"

He was suddenly shy and blushy; it was the most adorable thing you've ever seen. You open your mouth to say another line, but he cuts you off.

"I, um, I really like you!" he blurts. "No, that's not right... I'm in love with you! I think? I... I don't know, I talk about you all the time and I always want to be around you, and every time you're around me my heart feels like it's gonna beat out of my chest..."

Oh.

You weren't expecting a spontaneous love confession, but woah, you were delighted. "You're in love with me?"

He suddenly pales. "Did you... did you not mean those... oh no."

"Oh, I meant them,” You insist quickly. "In fact, I meant much more than what I said. I think I'm in love with you too! In fact... there's nothing I'd like more than to go on a date with you sometime soon, if you’d like."

He visibly relaxes. "Really?"

You nod. Suddenly, he's grinning from ear to ear and pulling you into a tight hug.

"Yes! Oh man, I can't wait to tell my mom... She's been nagging me about asking you out forever."

"Oh? And why is that?"

"Why do you think?" says Deuce. "I can't stop talking about you, and she reads me like a book. She's given me all sorts of advice on how to treat you... which reminds me," he suddenly stands up and offers his hand to you. "Let's go on a date now! I have the perfect one planned... if you're interested?"

Of course you were interested. You take his hands, and Deuce leads you away from your study space with a grin. He practically runs to the Ignihyde dorm, confident they would have a blastcycle he’d be able to borrow.

A ride to the beach was excellent for a first date, right?

Ace:

"You're trash."

Ace scoffs at you. "Oh yeah? You're trashier. What're you suddenly attacking me for?"

"Well, you must be trash, right? Because I really wanna take you out."

He processes your backhanded pick up line for a moment, and then suddenly, he's looking away--with a blush on his face, no doubt.

"Of all the pick up lines you could say to me... that's the one you choose?"

"Well, I thought you'd find it funny," you say. "Are you an artist? Because you're good at drawing me in."

He wrinkles his nose at you, trying to ignore how flustered he was becoming. "Ew. I think I prefer the insulting one."

"Fair. You remind me of my favorite library book--I keep wanting to check you out!"

"Perish."

You laugh. "Oh, was that where I crossed the line? Hey Ace, are you tired?"

"Of you?" He says. It was hard to be insulted when his face was so red.

"Well, sort of. I was just asking because it must be exhausting running through my mind all day."

"Tch."

Ace goes silent for a moment, and you take the opportunity to think up more lines. You're so lost in thought that you miss his determined look—at least until he grabs the sides of your face and pulls you in, keeping your lips inches from his.

"I've forgotten how to kiss--could you teach me how?"

Before you could respond, he releases you and backs up like five feet, covering his face.

"Ew, no, I can't do it! How can you say all that cheesy stuff with such a straight face? Geez..."

You smile at him fondly. He looks torn between making fun of you and making another attempt to match your flirtatious energy, but you end up speaking first.

"Does that mean the offer is off the table?"

"What?" He scowls again. "What are you talking about?"

"Kissing lessons!" You remind him. "I could still teach you how to kiss, if you like."

"Bah, that's not even a pick-up line anymore, that's just... just blatant flirting. That's-" He cuts himself off, eyes going wide. "Do you like me?"

You raise your eyebrows. "Respectfully, Ace, I'm not the type to offer kissing lessons to the homies."

"Is that a yes?"

“Yeah, dummy."

"Well why didn't you say so!" He’s grinning hugely now. He grabs your face again, this time with more confidence. "I lied. I know how to kiss--and I'm real good at it too. Would you like me to show you?"

Looks like your pick-up lines produced better results than expected. "I would like nothing more."

Mc/yuu: "listen here, I love you from the bottom of my heart but I don't trust your cooking. Stay out of my kitchen."

Ace, Deuce, Yuu, & Grimm Relationship Analysis

Before we got into this, I wanted to specify why I added Grimm in. Typically, when I see people talk about the relationship of any of the characters and Yuu, Grimm is never mentioned. Unless of course, they are referring to the relationship of Yuu and Grimm.

I think this is an oversight. Simply because Yuu and Grimm are quite literally a package deal. There are a few characters in the game you so rarely see without each other, Jamil & Kalim, Azul & the twins, these are examples of this. But you also see these characters on their own quite frequently. But Yuu and Grimm being separated from each other is abnormal.

I can only think of three examples where they are willingly away from each other. The first, being in Iida’s lab vignette where Grimm was sent by Ace and Yuu to go get snacks. But even then, Ace and Yuu weren’t far behind him. The second, when Yuu went to go talk to Malleus. Grimm was asleep during this, and even then - Yuu’s relationship with Malleus effects Malleus’s relationship with Grimm. Simply put, since Yuu has permission to call Malleus Tsunotaro, Grimm also has permission to call him Tsunotaro. And thirdly, when Grimm went to eat magic stones. Yuu wasn’t always aware Grimm was doing this and Grimm also kinda came off possessed during those times - which is another thing entirely to talk about, but the point still stands. Grimm and Yuu are rarely ever away from each other.

Which is why I included Grimm in this analysis, he is just as important to the relationship as Yuu is.

Now, moving on from that, let’s talk about Ace’s, Deuce’s, Yuu’s and Grimm’s relationship. They by far have one of the most unique relationships in the game. This is because we actually get to actively see their character growth throughout the game through the relationship.

They are the only group in the game that Yuu can say will be there to help them no matter what. Chapter four and six not standing simply because of the unique circumstances. But that doesn’t change the fact that Ace and Deuce wanted to help Grimm and Yuu, they just couldn’t get to them in time.

The other characters don’t do this. Typically, you’ll only see the character for their respective chapters and the following one. Chapter six is unique in that regard, but that seems to be the rule. Only, Ace and Deuce don’t follow this rule. They have been in every chapter, either in big or small ways.

Because of this, we get to see them grow as characters. We don’t get to really see this for other characters, but we can for Ace, Deuce, and Grimm.

In particular, I think Ace, Deuce, and Grimm are all effected by Yuu in a unique way. Yuu is described as “disgustingly nice” by some of the characters. And since they are villains, this isn’t surprising. 

I think we see this “disgustingly nice” trait with Grimm the most. Keep in mind, Yuu took Grimm in. They could have kicked him out, or had Crowley kick him out once he showed up. Keep in mind, Grimm tried to burn Yuu alive on first meeting, and kept insulting and demeaning them second meeting because they didn’t have magic. It’s shown that Yuu feels sympathetic for Grimm, and that’s probably why they took him in, in a way.

Grimm treats Yuu as a henchmen but will get just as offended on Yuu’s behalf when something happens to them. And Ace has made a few comments on home screen, Ceremonial robes if memory serves, about how Grimm acts up the moment Yuu leaves. Grimm does cause Yuu a lot of trouble, but Yuu is known as a beast tamer because Grimm will only listen to Yuu. And I think that’s because Yuu is “disgustingly nice”. It’s kinda like, Grimm may give Yuu a hard time, but he’s the only one that can do that because that’s his henchmen.

Ace and Deuce do the same thing. They’ll give Yuu a hard time and cause trouble, but they are there for Yuu when Yuu needs help. They do this for each other as well. Considering these are the same people that had Yuu give them their lunch to help catch Grimm in the beginning, and they’ve now moved on to helping with much bigger things because they’re worried about Yuu says a lot about their character growth. And I think this is because Yuu is so “disgustingly nice”. Yuu hasn’t made the three of them better people, but Yuu has made them care more for their people.

And this concern isn’t centered around Yuu. It goes between all four of them. We see this in Endless Halloween with Ace. His vignette in particular. He knows Deuce is gone, so he goes to check Ramshackle to check if Yuu and Grimm are gone too. And when he finally gets them back, he’s angry because it was all just some big prank and he was worried something horrible happened to them. And he couldn’t even get mad because it was a prank pulled by the Malleus Draconia, and it was a big party for the ghosts.

This was the person that teased and poked fun at Grimm and Yuu in the beginning and tried to skip out on his punishment. This was the person that refused to work with the others and was content to get expelled. This was also the person that ran to Yuu because he knew they would at least let him stay at their dorm because they were so “disgustingly nice”. And this is the person that traveled a huge distance, spent and did who knows how much, just to get to Yuu and Grimm because they were in trouble. Him and Deuce didn’t even get to spend proper time with their families over break, because they immediately went to go help Yuu and Grimm.

Deuce was the person that got dragged into Yuu’s, Grimm’s, and Ace’s situation. Also refused to work with someone even though it could get him expelled. But he was also the person that went to check on Ace once he learned that something had happened. And even though Ace and Deuce both had times where they wanted something in exchange for their help, they went running to help both Yuu and Grimm once they knew they needed it.

Grimm is the person that didn’t have anyone before he came to NRC. And even then, the only person he had was Yuu. Yuu didn’t have anyone because they came to NRC and didn’t have anyone but Grimm. Ace and Deuce became people they could rely on. And Ace and Deuce could rely on them in turn.

Another thing is - spoilers - how Grimm, Ace, and Deuce are all helping Yuu get home in Chapter seven. All three will lose Yuu, who they care for deeply as a friend. Grimm in particular will be the most alone once Yuu leaves and there is no guarantee he can still be a student once Yuu leaves. But all three are still helping Yuu find a way home.

They have one of the clearest friendships in NRC. You know that they are friends. And I think this is because that they have one “non-villain” character that it’s so obvious that they are friends. Because while Ace, Deuce, and Grimm wouldn’t necessarily say that they are friends, Yuu would. 

That’s not to say they don’t have their ups and downs. You notice this the most with Ace and Deuce. Ace teases Deuce a lot, and Deuce doesn’t appreciate it. While Ace teases people because he genuinely wants to make fun of them, he also does it to people he likes. It’s unclear on if Deuce knows this, but it does upset Deuce enough that he’ll go to the beach and scream about it. It’s also unclear on if Ace knows that it even bugs Deuce this much. It probably doesn’t help that the two can’t get away from each other, they share a dorm room. But they’re still friends. 

People know that they’re still friends even when they frustrate each other, simply because if you can’t find the two with Grimm and Yuu, you can typically find them together.

Ace and Deuce are friends. Yuu and Grimm are friends. And while all four are friends, they do separate in that regard. But together they are a friendship group that cares about all of its members and will do anything for each other.

There’s an interesting phrase I’ve heard before. A hero would sacrifice you for the world, but a villain would sacrifice the world for you. I think this sums up the four’s relationship perfectly at the end of the day.
