Really getting flashbacks to the gay rights era, where the talking points used to justify anti-gay discrimination were just transparently nonsensical but people just really kept repeating them.
"The purpose of marriage is to have kids so that's why we can't let gays marry"
"So, we should also ban infertile people from getting married?"
"No, because an infertile man and a woman might be able to have kids if they hypothetically became fertile so it's okay for them to get married."
????
Okay, I mean, if we're just imagining an arbitrary change in reality gay couples could have kids if one of them suddenly changed sex, I don't see how "If they could have kids, they could have kids" makes any more sense for one couple than the other.
Same with the transparent nonsense of "In biological reality there are only two sexes"
I mean... There are more than two arrangements of sex characteristics in biological reality.
"Yes but it is an indisputable biological reality that only two of those arrangements count and the rest don't."
Yeah I feel like that's a taxonomy, not a "biological fact".

This is a really interesting article about the history of opium and also the guy being interviewed literally did go from “antique opium pipes and lamps look really neat!” to deciding he’d try it out more and more and becoming addicted to the drug through the same antiques he was collecting

I prefer a society in which even the most garbage brainrot media that I don’t agree with is allowed over one where the government and megacorpos has control over what people is allowed to look at, actually

hi yes hello what the fuck is metrosexual lmfao
It's hard to explain to zoomers just how insanely homophobic the early 2000s were. If you were male, and like, washed your hair regularly, people would call you a faggot.
So, dudes who washed their hair and wore button ups developed the term "metrosexual" which meant "I care about my appearance but I am attracted to women and don't have sex with men."

majora's mask is a game that does live up to the hype
you've already seen my grumbling about the controls and how they drag down the experience, so i won't go into them anymore here, saying only that they do feel better than ocarina did (whether because the controls improved or the game world was better designed around them, i can't say). because other than that, there's just so much to love
My favorite thing about zelda games is the exploration. I thought that I wouldn't get as much of it in this game because of its smaller scale (necessitated by its short window of development). But by instituting the timeloop, the devs basically created a different avenue of exploration: time. because the world and characters move with the passage of time, you get to explore their personalities and needs the same way you'd find a cave or forest. and i think that's really cool. you really get to know this town and the people in it. the sidequests are a little confusing, but they make for some interesting gameplay as you figure out what to use where, and more importantly when
the dungeons were also a big step up. there's only 4, but they're more extensive than anything in ocarina, with some clearly uses of setpieces and puzzles that require full use of your abilities. the transformation masks themselves are such a fun idea. ultimately they're just more involved items, sure, yet it's just really fun to be someone other than basic link. the fact that they can all fight in addition to help clear areas is great. plus all the different reactions people will have to the different forms, and the way they're all incorporated into the story as characters. it just comes together to make a more gratifying, exciting experience to play
but enough about gameplay. the real meat of majora's mask, the reason it has endured as the favorite of so many, is the story itself. not just the story, the whole surreal aesthetic of the game is like nothing that's been in zelda before or since. this brutal, depressing game about death that looms over the whole world. reading people's reactions to it, the ones who give in to despair but also the ones who are determined to stick through it. the time loop adds so much to the experience. I've talked about the nature of the time limit and how stressful it can be, but that's all intentional. the game makes you feel the intense pressure that link and the land of termina is under, the feeling of hopelessness that comes with the end so clearly in sight. the final hours, when the town is abandoned and moon is about to crash, is one of the most harrowing experiences i've felt in a video game
but those bits of joy you get from helping everyone are what make it all worth it. playing the game and skipping the sidequests feels like the absolute way to play majora. saving the ranch and helping both romania and cremia. inspiring gorman to be a better man. breaking the postman from his life-threatening routine. saving the old woman from getting robbed. everything to do with anju and kafei. even skull kid, tatl and tael and our glimpses into who they were before. saving these people means everything, both in a literal and metaphorical sense. it is incredibly cathartic to finally end the threat and reach the dawn of a new day, in a way few other video games have hit for me.
finally i would be remiss to not mention the music. zelda always has good music, but for a game as moody and driven as this one, it was a necessity. clock town, the great bay, stone tower temple, the song of healing, the oath to order, the final hours. you could not have created such a compelling game without the music that went with it
i've said my piece about 3d zelda games before, and I think i'll always prefer the 2d ones when given the choice. but as far as those 3d games go, I don't think I could argue anything other than Majora's mask in that top spot
Twilight princess is next on the list. in a bit. Majora is a game that demands i process it for a while. it deserves no less

Replaying Super Mario Odyssey. This has always been a tough game for me to replay, and I've never quite put my finger on why. It's really apparent this round that most levels have a 2 act "Unraveling" phase before they fully enter the "Sandbox" phase. I think really the game benefits from just rushing the story. Grab the minimum number of moons and move on. Think of any sandboxy moons you pick up during unraveling as like green stars or dragon coins. I did that and I've actually kind of enjoyed it. Finished the main game with 142 moons.
But that's weird right? Like playing it like I play Mario 64 or Mario Sunshine was detrimental to the play experience? I don't really know what to make of that. I'll probably have more thoughts when I finish playing through the sandbox portion of the game.
