Me when I read someone over 35 whining about being old in fiction: UNACCEPTABLE. OUTRAGEOUS. THEY'RE IN THE SPRINGTIME OF YOUTH. Also! All of this is ageist and the cult of the youth is a blight on the world anyway. Being old isn't shameful.

aly married and pregnant at the end of TQ is still so fucking ooc to me she would not fucking do that idgaf if nawat wants nestlings. she's like 18 tammy come onnnn. like i fully think she would pull a daine and not have kids for a solid decade+ after getting with her lover and frankly it is downright irresponsible to have children as a spymaster when there's still political upheaval going on. it just does not ring true to me at all

Question for folks: how do we feel about the Mastiff plot twist 14 years later? I remember thinking it was a cop-out when the book was first released but on reading it again I don't actually mind it so much.

(Not using any names to keep this post spoiler-free for folks just going through the tag!)

Personally for me I think I was so mad about the twist that I wrote off the entire book, which is a shame because I think Mastiff actually kind of... justifies the other two books in the series? It takes otherwise standalone stories and places them into a larger Tortallan context, and it does its best to fill in some lore gaps as well (the Sight, the Ysandir, the existence of wild magic prior to Daine). It's a good book, and I'm a little embarrassed that I judged it so hard based on the final few chapters for so long. (In fairness to me, I was 16 at the time and not very inclined towards nuanced critiques.)

So I'm curious - do you like it, hate it, don't care either way? Has your opinion changed since you first read it? Do you think it adds to or detracts from the rest of the book? Would you have felt differently if it had involved a different character?

Laios (non-sam aromantic) - I don't think he's even ever considered romance as a thing he would be interested in. Dating someone has simply never occurred to him. If someone asked him out it would certainly lead to a lot of thoughts.

Mithrun (loveless aromantic, romance indifferent) - I'm right and I know it. This unfortunately means I'm the only person who truly understands Kabru/Mithrun (/lh).

Mabel Pines (aromantic) - I view Mabel's obsession with boys as playing into her own internalized amatonormativity and comphet. She'll be much happier once she realizes she doesn't actually want to date anybody (I also love the cupio and lesbian hcs, this is just my interpretation)

Tahani Al-Jamil (aroallo) - She really just seems unbothered by the romantic parts of her relationships in the show, and her arc ends up with her staying single.

Before Ran can answer, Azusa comes over and places their food and drink in front of them.

Azusa: Sorry for keeping two of my favourite customers waiting, I gave you a bit extra as an apology.

She winks at the two before walking away.

Shinichi turns back to look at Ran to continue their conversation: So what's the real... reason...

Only to drift off when he notices Ran's complete attention was on Azusa walking away and she was sporting a light blush on her cheeks.

Shinichi, with a role of his eyes: Oh. I understand now.
