Every time i run into someone who's like "I had a nazi phase haha" there's three possibilities:

They weren't a nazi and are vastly underestimating how bad it would've been to actually be a fucking nazi

They were a nazi and aren't taking it seriously enough that they were a fucking nazi

They literally still hold their far right beliefs and just had to move away from nazi communities because those communities said "no actually we hate you personally"

In all three cases, the clue is in the flippant attitude they're using. You just don't see actual reformed former nazis act like that, especially not around strangers because it's the kind of information you don't bring up unprompted to strangers if you genuinely understand and regret it.
