where is jet in lok??

If you venture into the interior of the earth kingdom, past omashu, through desert and closer to twisting canyons: you may find yourself inside a deep and dark forest. Here, the trees have grown tall, the roots warp the ground below & you may stumble over them. You may find you can no longer see the sky at points, the branches eclipsing the view. It is quieter in here, a sense that this place is very old, that it is protected & if you are in glaring red of the fire nation you may find yourself feeling unwelcome. (you know you are being watched. You forget at times. Then it overwhelms once more, & if you turn around there is no one there. You hear bird calls at times. Now and again, a deep mournful howl joins in, you are not alone…)

There are distinctive wooden signs that you will eventually discover—those that tell you to turn back, this is a place of refuge and healing & those representing the fire nation-be warned this is your chance to turn back Now. If you venture too far past these signs—you will hear the rustle of leaves, is it wind shaking the branches? A snapping of a limb, there is a din of noise now, shapes move throughout the trees, too far off to make out, but you’ve been surrounded for a while now…

hello, it’s true I just started seeing this become more popular...& here I am one of the original shippers... anyways, Jet/Haru : fought for reparations, helped reunite families, fostered children & are both living their best lives in the earth kingdom with all their grandkids <3

//I sometimes feel like getting extremely pissed whenever someone posts something about how “Jet couldn’t let go of his grudge” , like what a way to dismiss and belittle his anger at what happened to him and others–and to ignore the real impact colonialism/imperialism has on others..and here, some notes from a class I took..that I think are relevant when discussing the war in atla and what I feel I sometimes refer to:

The Faces of Oppression,  oppression- one way systematic mistreatment of one group by the other with that mistreatment reinforced and supported by the society at large. Hegemony, group in power, after a while, believe they deserve to be in power because they are superior.  Cultural Imperialism- the dominant groups experiences and culture make the subordinate groups experiences and cultures deviant and inferior, invisible, isolated,.

Genocide/Colonialism- Indigenous people must disappear and must always be disappearing. The dominant group believes everything belongs to them. To strip a people of their land, language, culture, family structure, and who they are as a people. 

Violence-systematic, the oppressed group must fear random and unprovoked attacks on their persons or property, the motive is to damage, humiliate, or destroy. 

Oppressor always has access to violence, it is both a weapon and tool.

     He is not held accountable. Hiding behind a façade of kindly & wise. & yet, how long did he stand by the throne? How long did he benefit from colonization, imperialism, & reap the rewards of war? How many sons did he kill himself in the earth kingdom, before he is so moved by his own son’s death? Countless others fell before him. How many children, civilians, mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers whose humanity was inherent- but it was a humanity that he never recognized or cared to?. The open pits, the levelled towns & villages as the war machine marched towards ba sing se. no, they burned & massacred their way.

    There is a town of no strategic value nor importance- & yet his friends, the rough rhinos strike at dawn. Destroy the town, spare none. & this is but one town of many. General Iroh, the Dragon of the West can scarcely remember the name. does not bother-for there are others of more worth to know. ( “you killed my father.”  “You will have to be more specific; I’ve killed a great many fathers.” )

   For a child looking on with tear stained cheeks, his whole world burning, it is the defining moment of his life, a pivotal one that will fuel him for years. He will think back on this day & let the helplessness he felt move him towards action.

      For the General, it was just another day.

    & we talk of the banality of war & of evil. It is a smiling old man, it is the bitter realization that his name will be remembered. That he will be remembered as the mask, the performance,  a presentation to the world that hid the truth of his crimes. & that this lie will be upheld & perpetrated by those in power.

      His victims will never be remembered, their names lost, their bodies in ashes.

    (it is hard to burn bones. They know this. the hands grasping out of the earth. The skulls still keeping watch. They remember. Do not forget us, we will not let you. Everywhere you dig in the kingdom, we are found)

     There’s a boy brandishing swords, accusing the blood soaked general of firebending. Unknowing, that this man helped to set him on this path. It all led to here. Yet the voiceless, the marginalized remain so.

i simply think jet and his kids deserved to live happy and peaceful lives together in ba sing se and take care of each other and heal from their trauma
