a/n: I started this story a while back ( a year ago?!) and pretty soon fell out with the idea I claimed stupid, but then upon rediscovering it recently again I was adamant that it really did need to be finished, l've wanted to write this guy forever and this is the final result...I dunno if it was worth the wait🤣I just hope that I captured the 99 good enough!
Jake Peralta x F! Reader
Almost as if by magic officer Jake Peralta was gifted decent coffee at work practically every day, and it always put him in a good mood courtesy of you his desk buddy, only he still had yet to realise why this was actually happening much to their squads mutual annoyance.
Until Jake spots another guys name and digits on his styrofoam cup at first acting indifferent, but soon realising he’s jealous so it’s time to do some detective work of his own, and get to the bottom of this mystery…

{Coffee is for closers}
~Two~
Thanks to falling back asleep again after your alarm you were feeling both flustered and annoyed, unable to start this day just right you were already in a bad mood, which follows you all the way to the subway station and even to the elevators in the precinct.
Without your nice coffee in hand you would have to suffer the offering in the break room, which was usually cheap and old having been left out in the pot for too long, the thought of drinking that alone enhances your mood towards the negative ten fold.
Add to this the fact that Jake wouldn’t be arriving into work until after lunchtime, you weren’t looking forward to this shift at all especially seeing how you had to go back out with Rosa, yet again the memory of yesterday afternoon reappearing in your mind.
Julius had been very surprised to see you twice in one day, it was usually unheard of yet there you were and your once favourite barista had even more to say, which went in one ear and out of the other because you weren’t confident enough to follow it through.
In a work situation you found spending time with Jake fine, the pair of you worked well and it got the job done, but to approach him socially the very idea made you want to run in the other direction, afraid of rejection or even worse your desk buddy laughing in your face.
This very notion alongside the elevator doors opening super slowly, you welcome the distraction that falls upon you when Boyle appears wearing a pair of white feathery wings, over his work clothes with a silver halo headband to complete the look.
“Is this an undercover outfit or is it Halloween again?” You ask him with a smile as he shakes his head with an excited giggle.
“I was just checking out lost property and came across these wings don’t they look good!” Boyle explains with a wink and a wiggle of his shoulders, as if he was about to take off in flight.
“They look something-“
“Boyle, if I can’t say the things that are occupying my thoughts right now I’m gonna go insane!” Gina cuts in with an exasperated look on her face but clocking you it changes instantly.
“Wow, you look so bad can I talk about just how bad you look right now instead?” Gina shouts grabbing onto your arm, whilst ignoring the phone at her desk which was ringing loudly.
“Please don’t-“
“Boyle please take off that outfit it’s distracting others.” Terry asks with a sharp look at his colleague, desperately trying not to laugh which was proving hard so he turns around instead.
“I can’t work in these conditions!” Gina yells as she stalks back over to her desk, snatching the offending phone up off its cradle in record speed.
Boyle was definitely on some kind of high all morning, seeing how he still hadn’t removed those damn wings which had now put Terry in a bad mood, yet the officer persisted much to your annoyance.
Gina meanwhile was sending messages to the group chat that even had Boyle in, so he could read her hurtful words as she went full-Linetti, giggling as she furiously typed on her keyboard with the whole office rolling their eyes.
You smirk to yourself as you start to think of Jake defending Boyle, at first of course but then even adding a few teasing comments himself, because he never went as far as Gina nobody could ever match her sarcastic prowess even you it truly was a gift sometimes.
Luckily Holt was out of the office for meetings which meant that Terry was in charge, trying to control Boyle who was truly in such an annoying mood, which is proven when the sergeant carries the smaller officer off into the break room with apparent ease.
“Can you carry me around next?” Gina asks Terry from across the office but he fails to respond with an answer.
You roll your eyes then notice the look on Rosa’s face, making you stand up from your desk ready to roll because your colleague also looked super pissed, which meant the current investigation they were on had hit a problem.
“I don’t like the alibi that Mrs Rose had and her ex husband is not answering my calls which annoys me as you know.” Rosa states as you hit her desk with a simple nod.
“I didn’t believe that Bobby hated her ex husband as much as she said-“
“Always the romantic!” Cuts in Rosa with a snort as she grabs her phone and they start heading out.
“Yeah but not in real life.” You retort with a sigh watching as Boyle reappears in the office, finally without his wings but he is now on a private call with a huge grin on his face…
Standing outside of the coffee shop Jake regrets a lot of things, from being here in the first place to drinking way too much alcohol last night, he had a lot on his mind and somehow it all came back to you his desk buddy.
Having just spoken with Boyle who confirmed you were both in the office, and in a good mood Jake recalled the conversation he had with his best friend at the bar, finally admitting that someone was on his mind a lot but working together with them was a negative obviously.
Cue flashback to Jake dating another cop from a different precinct, him bringing officer Collins to the nine-nine and it being a huge disaster, them working together had been conflicting to the relationship especially seeing how neither of them were on the same page.
“Me and Jake are going to start looking at places soon-“
“But my apartment is so cheap!” Cuts in Jake noticing the look on Boyle’s face as Emily rolls her eyes.
“Yes, but you need a kick in the right direction and I’m just the girl to do it!” Emily states firmly catching the attention of Terry who walks over.
“I get a say in this-“
“Couples should talk things through how long have you two been together?” Terry cuts off Jake.
“Barely three months-“
“Over seven actually.” Emily informs Jake with a glare as he tries to smile an apology, but the look on her face was really something.
“It’s still early days we’re just having fun right?” Jake questions but again it’s the wrong one when Emily literally stamps her foot on the ground.
“I want a relationship not a fuck buddy-“
“Some people are actually trying to work here!” Y/n yells from across the pen, with a pointed look on her face.
“I think we should take this outside.” Jake nods at you and then addresses Emily again who has her mouth set in a thin line.
“Is it worth it? I think we should just break up-“
“What here right now!” Jake interjects with a hint of sarcasm, knowing that he should’ve gone with his detective gut all along.
“Yes, get out-“
“Er, this is my place of work.” Jake snorts turning round to look at you, but you’re hiding behind a thick purple binder.
“Ok, so I will leave then!” Emily shouts angrily.
“What is happening-“
“I’m leaving and you won’t see me ever again Jake, this was supposed to be a good day and I was willing to wait for you to grow up but here we are.” Emily snaps back.
“There is nothing wrong with Jake but it’s obvious you two are mismatched, let me show you out.” Boyle states in an adult voice that makes Jake go still, and Emily nod in agreement as he finally leaves the pen.
“Nothing to see here move along!” Jake calls out when he notices Terry, Gina and even you reappear from behind your binder.
“That was a lot.” Gina begins with a chuckles as she elaborates that “I should know but damn it Jake you don’t meet potential dates at work.”
“Hey, I met one of my ex wives here-“
“See! Do you want to end up like Hitchcock I think I already know the answer to that.” Gina explains with a knowing smile on her face.
“The answer is of course yes!” Laments Hitchcock with a knowing grin.
“I need to get out of here.” Jake groans because it was his day off after all, and now he suddenly had some free time on his hands.
“Have you not gone in there yet?” Boyle questions quickly alerting Jake, who had been locked down in his own thoughts.
“Clearly I’m waiting for you-“
“I can’t believe that we are actually doing this!” Boyle exclaims happily talking over Jake with excitement in his eyes.
“You are doing this Boyle I’m not going in there you just need to get some intel.” States Jake diplomatically.
“This feels like we’re back in high school exchanging letters in class and I’m here for it-“
“Cut it out! Just go in there and get some coffee’s, but one has to have extra caramel syrup don’t forget.” Jake informs Boyle who smiles happily back.
“I can’t wait to see y/n’s face when you give her the coffee, and then finally ask her out for a drink don’t forget!” Boyle claps his hands with obvious glee.
“This isn’t like one of those books you read Boyle this is real life.” Jake reminds him with an eye roll.
“But what’s wrong with some romance? You should totally get her flowers as well!” Boyle cries out whilst Jake wishes that he wasn’t here outside the coffee shop.
“Look just get the coffees and we will go from there.” Jake nods firmly, watching with a smirk as Boyle puts on his black sunglasses as if to not look out of place.
“This is insane.” Jake reminds himself softly because he hadn’t dated anyone since Emily, and to go back on his word and meet someone at work once again…
You stand outside the closed up jewellery store with Rosa cursing by your side, Mrs Rose was supposed to be here a timeline needed to be established again, and her ex husband Keith needed to return their calls for further questioning.
Rosa had put out a call for someone to collect Keith if need be, but standing outside the store was getting boring very quick, you try and start a conversation but your colleague changes the pace.
“Do you know what’s fun? Hooking up with someone because I had one hell of a time last night.” Rosa states with a confident nod of her head.
“Rub it in-“
“I do have a lot of cleaning up to do when I get back home.” Rosa informs you with a grin when she clocks the look on your face.
“Ok enough!” You retort back with an eye roll.
“All I’m saying is if you’re free tonight, why not ask a certain single detective slash idiot out with you?” Rosa questions with a laugh at the pure simplicity of it all because that shit was easy as hell.
“Jake is working late-“
“That’s a stupid excuse.” Rosa sighs but before she can say anything else, a commotion causes them to follow the loud noise, arguing down the side of the short red brick building.
You recognise the suspect Bobby who was wearing a blue baseball cap covering her face, but you registered her voice right away shouting at the man next to her, who was holding a shiny black gun in the air high above his head.
“Drop the weapon!” Rosa shouts which causes them both to look round, whilst the guy attempts to hurriedly yank open the back door.
“Don’t move.” You state back at the same time that Bobby bursts into tears, and the guy next to her snaps and starts running.
He still has the gun in his hand so you set off chasing after him, to the very end of the alleyway where he tries to climb up a fire escape but he can’t reach it, so you pull on his leg to get him down both falling into a large pile of disgusting rubbish bags.
“Get off me bitch!” The guy shouts but you manage to swiftly apply the handcuffs, ignoring his curse words as you read him his rights out loud.
Rosa nods as you eventually walk back up with the guy in custody and a cop car appears moments later, depositing both the guy and Bobby who wasn’t crying anymore but looked super pissed instead, yet none of that mattered right now because it was time to go back to the precinct and book them job done.
“Mrs Rose has just told me that her ex husband is still in the building, another car is coming by in a minute and there are some guys inside right now checking the whole area.” Rosa informs you with a simple nod.
“So you think it was an inside job? Claim on the insurance.” You ask Rosa who again nods in the affirmative.
“We will need to interview them of course, but it appears that Mrs Rose was trying to get help from her ex husband for some insurance money.” Rosa explains because the women had become very chatty, especially when you had run off to catch the other perpetrator.
“Another day-“
“Another set of idiots.” Rosa continues with a scoff but then pulls as face as she asks “Do you smell that?”
“Oh, that’s me I was rolling around in the trash it’s all in a days work.” You retort with a smirk.
“You definitely need a shower-“
“I kinda like it.” You joke back with an eye roll aimed at Rosa, as you watch another man finally exit the shop with two cops either side of him.
“Let’s get back to the precinct, unless you want to go and grab two coffees-“
“No way.” You interject with a shudder as you choose a car to hop into for the quick drive back to the precinct…
Standing at the empty counter Boyle notices the guy called Julius, going by his name badge and wow was this man attractive, the thought makes his heart sink as he thinks of Jake outside.
But then Charles recalls in a short montage that only he can see of Peralta and you, both laughing as you talk together at your desk, Jake watching you reading your book with coffee in hand, then finally eyes meeting from across the pen as if neither of you were far from the others thoughts this guy couldn’t match up to that kind of chemistry…
“What can I get you?” Begins Julius arching an eyebrow at the guy wearing the sunglasses inside as he adds “Specials are on the board and I would highly recommend the macchiato today.”
“Can I just have three latte’s with one that has extra caramel syrup in my good sir.” Boyle replies nonchalantly, but not without turning round to reward Jake with a thumbs up.
Julius of course notices this followed by the badge number pin on this guys tie, he couldn’t be more of a cop which makes him wonder if this was in fact Jake, the object of y/n’s affection one of his best customers on the block.
“Did you say one latte with extra caramel syrup someone has a sweet tooth!” Julius smiles back at the guy in front of him who just nods playfully.
“It’s for a colleague of mine back at the precinct er, I mean the office I’m trying to sweeten them up actually if you must know.” Boyle replies almost giving away where he works but remains cool in his efforts.
“You’re sweet on someone!” Julius grins playing into the playful and sugary theme that had organically started between them.
“I could use some advice really if truth be told.” Boyle nods looking down as the barista starts to operate the large coffee machine next to him.
“I’m all ears, but one moment please.” Julius smirks as he starts to prepare the coffee’s, flicking switch’s and a loud hissing noise that makes the guy in front of him jump.
Boyle is watching this guy working fast as he operates the machine like it was a part of him, lost in his own thoughts until he notices the barista watching him back, an inquisitive smile appearing on his handsome face.
“So, what’s the deal then?” Julius asks the guy who calls himself Charles as he starts to talk at hyper speed.
Jake can see that Boyle is talking at ease with the barista, who looked like he worked in a coffee shop by day, but by night he was behind a bar talking it up over happy hour with women all around him.
Again Jake reminds himself how ridiculous this is because either way, he didn’t have a chance seeing how y/n would let him down some way, or even worse this sexy barista would tell him to back off and that would be that.
Noticing suddenly that Julius had walked round from the counter, to stand closer to Boyle was when Jake had realised that something was about to go wrong, so he reacts by swinging open the green door to finally make his presence known.
But Jake pulls a confused face when he spots Julius nudging Boyle hard on the shoulder, the pair of them laughing heartily at something until they both look up, and he suddenly realises that it’s him he’s the butt of the joke right now.
“What’s happening-“
“Julius is on our side!” Cuts in Boyle with a smile as he elaborates that “The name and number on the cup were just a ruse for you to do something Jake.”
“Oh, so you’re Jake?” Julius questions giving an appreciative glance over at a still confused looking police officer.
“The one and same how do you know about me?” Questions Jake arching an eyebrow at Boyle who grins back.
“Now that would be telling.” Begins Julius with a smile as he heads back round to the coffee machine adding “But I feel you’ve already figured it out seeing that you’re finally getting the coffees for once.”
“This is adorable-“
“Shut up, Boyle.” Jake deadpans in a dark voice heading back outside, holding the door open for an old couple who both nod their thanks.
“He’s almost as stubborn as y/n is!” Julius chuckles which make Boyle nod back in agreement.
“Short of knocking their heads together or better yet locking them in the briefing room, they need to just figure this out for themselves.” Boyle states wisely which causes Julius to roll his eyes over dramatically.
“Why make things so difficult?” Julius questions with a sarcastic tone, watching his next customers who were hugging one another closely.
“Love isn’t as simple as the movies make it out to be.” The woman chimes in with a friendly smile, looking up at the grey haired man next to her who winks happily back.
“But it’s a lot of fun along the way when it happens!” The man reminds his wife with a soft smile one that makes Boyle cluck happily in the background.
“Drinks up!” Julius calls as he places them down on the counter, holding one back as he looks up at Jake who was still outside the door.
“Perfect, let me grab a tray-“
“I can help!” Julius cuts off Boyle as he calls out for another barista, a young woman named Violet who had the same coloured hair as her namesake appearing stage right.
Boyle grins as he leads the way outside with the barista following behind, only when Jake spots him he lifts up his chin glancing away defiantly, pretty much looking like he was sulking right this second.
“Y/n will really appreciate this.” Julius tells Jake with a wink, holding out the drink for him to take which he does, whilst muttering something that sounded like a thank you.
“Then you can finally ask your desk buddy out at last-“
“For the love of god please!” Julius begs cutting off Boyle as he even places his hands together, holding them up in a silent plea in front of them both complete with a wide grin on his face.
“I think that’s a sign Jake.” Boyle jokes with a giggle whilst his best friend nods back with his eyes closed.
“This is all getting out of hand.” Jake sighs aware that too many people were now invested in this, his dating life and of course yours which if he played his cards right could soon become one…
Attempting to drink from one side of your mouth was already getting super old, all this hassle because your bottom lip was currently swollen and split like an overdone hotdog, courtesy of Mrs Rose hitting you with her elbow back in the interrogation room.
It hadn’t been enough that both Bobby and her ex husband Keith, were seated next to one another whilst the third guy was still awaiting his own interview in due time, but angry words shouted between the ex lovers had caused you to get caught in the cross line a direct punch to the face being your reward.
Which was a pretty good estimation of how today had gone, all because you hadn’t visited the Bean Stalk things had all turned to shit, you were thankfully clean now after a cold shower in the changing rooms but there was the whole gnarly lip thing to contend with next.
Having left Terry and Rosa to get answers from the couple that deserved one another, turns out that it wasn’t only a cut and dry fake insurance claim but the shop was also part of a money laundering scheme as well, all within the walls of the deep cellar which was a pretty obvious place to have it you decide to yourself.
But that didn’t matter right now all because it was finally the afternoon, only both Boyle and Jake were not here in the office which made you feel jittery despite the severe lack of coffee, but you were happy of course that the case was practically closed and you were back at your beloved desk.
Mid way through filling out your report which was reminding you where it had all gone wrong, Amy hands you a injury report form which had caused you to giggle at the stupidity, the movement causing your lip to spilt and bleed yet again of course.
Which was why you now had your mouth partly stuffed with a tissue, giving up completely on drinking when all you wanted right now was a sugary coffee, but instead you were staring down at the injury report which was ridiculous yet mandatory.
Suddenly hearing music being played from somewhere you look up to glance at Gina, a usual culprit for hosting impromptu dance parties at her desk, claiming that it either helped her mind or she was readily showcasing some new moves for her latest dance trope.
“Oh that’s a dope song-“
The chorus to a popular Whitney Houston jam was being played out currently, by a Bluetooth speaker that was held aloft by none other than Boyle, who was back to wearing his feathery wings with an extra wide smile plastered across his face.
“I get so emotional baby, every time I think of you!” Sings both Whitney and Gina but only one of them is out of tune right now.
“What is all the commotion, Boyle do I need to write you up?” Holt appears from his office shouting at Charles who instantly drops the speaker onto the floor.
“Er, no it’s all good captain sir!” Boyle shouts seconds after picking up aforementioned speaker, then saluting at Holt who just walks back into his office silently.
“Silent burn, wow there’s no recovering for that my little sugar plum!” Gina states with a loud laugh, wiggling her shoulders as if the music from moments ago was still playing.
“I’m Cupid Gina not a fairy.” Retorts Boyle in a sulky voice.
“I hope that you’re not wearing a diaper right now!” Gina quips back with another loud laugh, one that both Hitchcock and Scully join in with on cue.
“Let’s leave some mystery please, but if you must know I did try and buy some-“
“Boyle, please don’t finish that sentence for us.” Terry begins in a firm voice but it descends into giggles as he adds “ Leave your kinks at the door please officer.”
“Don’t kink shame me!” Boyle retorts loudly but then lowers his head, muttering something to himself as he returns to his desk sitting atop it grumpily.
What a day and you still had the rest of the afternoon to watch unfurl, because there was never a dull moment in this place and time had its own agenda, you think whilst giving the injury form on your desk the stink eye.
Glancing back at Boyle who was still talking to himself as he checked out the speaker, it looked a little dented on one side but he shrugs, then noticing you watching he winks back an overexcited smile appearing in slow motion.
Watching him as he drops the speaker in favour of a white styrofoam cup, which briefly makes you freeze until you realise a lot of places use them, surely Boyle hadn’t gone to Bean Stalk of all places he was a particular type of foodie.
He knew about all the best places in Brooklyn even boasting about them on his blog, the one that you should look at someday but right now wasn’t the time, because you still had this stupid form to fill in and Boyle was really getting on your nerves with his giggling.
White cup still in hand he gets a call through and talks to someone quietly on his desk phone, leaning back against his chair with a smug smile now on his face, making you feel like Boyle was up to something when clearly you were just overthinking everything as per usual.
Cue flashback to grabbing some doughnuts from your favourite place, having bypassed breakfast you had become hangry and in need of some carbs, so with two boxes in your hands you headed to the precinct.
The shop which was aptly named Voodoo doughnuts, had helped you with a case the manager answering questions to an incident that happened across the street, so you were friendly with the staff and besides their food was absolutely delicious.
As soon as you had placed the boxes down on your desk, you’d caught the interest of both Hitchcock and Scully, also Boyle who had taken one look at the purple coloured box and scoffed out loud.
“What’s wrong-“
“Voodoo is so overrated.”Boyle tutted at you as if you should know better.
“If you don’t want any Boyle I will!” Jake nods leaning forward in his desk with a grin on his face.
“Of course Jake.” You nod back happily feeling your face flush, which your desk buddy doesn’t notice but of course Boyle did because he never missed a single thing.
“Oh I get it.” Charles giggles softly as he looks from you to Jake with a smirk.
“Get what? That you’re being weird-“
“No I’m just watching something unfold right now and I have front row seats.” Boyle declares cutting off Jake who rolls his eyes in your direction.
“Ok, then.” You reply awkwardly avoiding Boyle who was batting his eyelashes, in favour of opening one of the purple boxes.
“Can we have one as well?” Scully questions with a smile on his face.
“Sure, they are for anyone besides Boyle who has far too good taste buds for these doughnuts.” You reply with a sarcastic grin.
“His loss.” Hitchcock declares making grabby hands whilst you issue out two doughnuts for the oldest officers on your team.
“Now it’s my turn.” Jake looks up at you from under his thick eyelashes, which clearly does something to your brain when you forget how to speak.
“What’s happening here?” Amy asks with a smirk noticing the look on y/n’s face, accompanied by the smirk on Jake’s which was a pretty cute moment.
“I think they’re about to make out right there on the desk.” Declares Hitchcock with an amused snort, one that breaks the spell between you and Jake almost instantly.
“Don’t be rude-“
“Our first kiss wouldn’t be here.” Jake announces with a scoff but then, attempts to flip it back when he hears what he’d just said out loud.
“This is too cute-“
“Shut up, Boyle!” Both you and Jake retort in unison much to everyone’s delight, the doughnuts forgotten about as you go to one side to the pen and your desk buddy takes the other hiding a goofy smile on his face.
Lost in your own thoughts you suddenly feel super hungry and in need of a beverage, having skipped food for this stupid form and to tend to your broken lip instead, the taste of metal still present on your tongue what you wouldn’t give for some decent coffee right about now…
Spotting y/n at her desk Jake tries to walk slowly over but then gives up, resuming a normal pace as he tries to look nonchalant, despite his heart hammering in his chest and the feeling that this was all a very terrible idea.
What if he had got things wrong or even worse Julius the barista had lied to them, there was no way that you liked him this was a precinct not high school, but this moment in time was pretty reminiscent of another back in his youth.
Only then did he have longer hair and a pizza face, using his humour to hide the fact that he was from a broken home but that didn’t matter right now, because he was way more confident than the teenage version of himself or so he had always assumed.
…this was it!
“For you, madam.” Jake begins with a hint of shyness in his voice, one that he stubs out as he then places the coffee on your desk confidently adding “ I think it’s about time that I bought you a coffee in return.”
Not even looking up at Jake you stare at the tall styrofoam cup instead, the one brandishing the green Bean Stalk logo which makes you then glance up at your desk buddy, who takes a step back when your eyes finally meet.
“You have something on your mouth-“
“Ohhhh no.” You mutter as you hastily take out the tissue, which had spots of dry blood on it as you wish to somehow disappear.
“What happened to your lip?” Jake asks dark eyes full of concern, as he places a hand under your chin to lift your face up heat illuminating your cheeks on cue from his touch.
“Long story-“
“Let’s go talk outside then.” Jake cuts you off as he rolls his eyes and glances beside him, to where Boyle was now standing with a huge grin on his face looking like he was about to explode.
“Off outside together and all alone!” Boyle declares in an excited voice, whilst the rest of the team had at least been trying to act subtle despite watching things unfold in real time.
“Boyle, at ease!” Amy snaps angrily then nods encouragingly at you, as if the camera was rolling and the penultimate scene everyone wanted could finally play out at last.
“I do need some fresh air.” You inform Jake getting up from your seat, grabbing the coffee that your desk buddy had bought just for you, which now made a smile spread across your face.
…which of course makes your lip split open attractively once again the taste of metal stinging your tongue.
Licking your bottom lip you briefly wished that your appearance was better, rather than damp hair and a swollen lip but this was the best it was gonna get, now wasn’t the time to overthink things you did have a coffee in your hand after all.
Noticing Gina give you an over exaggerated wink from across the pen, and then Amy closely follows this with an encouraging nod you finally stand up from your desk, following Jake happily out onto the balcony area for a talk because this was definitely the right moment.
Only then do you notice Boyle with his face pressed against the window, having literally shoved his head through a gap in the blind he was now stuck, but then Rosa appears pulling the officer away with an annoyed look on her face.
“Do you think that the whole team is watching us?” Questions Jake with a low chuckle his brown eyes meeting yours inquisitively.
“Most probably, or Boyle is telling them what we’re saying because he can read lips.” You smirk back flinching at the same time when your own stings in protest.
“So, how bad is the other guy?” Asks Jake motioning to your lip with a concerned look framing his features.
“Got caught in the cross fire between a scorned woman and her ex husband it’s all in a days work.” You reply with a shrug but Jake is still glancing down at you with worry in his eyes.
On cue you explain the case with Rosa and what had happened, even the part where you had caught the guy in the trash bags and arrested him, omitting the part about having to need a shower because of the stray banana peels you’d found inside your jacket somehow.
“Well you look like a badass with your badge of honour, AKA the swollen lip it’s kinda cute on you y/n.” Jake nods with a playful smile aimed in your direction.
“Watch out Peralta it sounds like you’re using a line right there.” You inform him with a roll of your eyes as he arches one of his eyebrows right back.
“Maybe I am or maybe, I’m just telling you that you look cute.” Jake replies with a sidelong look that causes you to choke on your sip of warm drink.
“Thanks for the coffee by the way!” You nod back shyly glancing back at the window, but thankfully there was no one there.
“Well I think it’s about time that I actually owe you a coffee and extend a heartfelt thank you.” Begins Jake with a smile which changes into a laugh as he adds “I just had to go and check out the Bean Stalk for myself.”
“That’s sweet-“
“I met your favourite barista by the way!” Jake interjects with a wry grin as your eyes widen at the same time.
“Oh?” You reply noncommittally ignoring the smile that spread happily across your desk buddy’s face.
“Yeah, he had a hell of a lot to say about you but he was glad that I’d finally showed up for once.” Jake states his brown eyes watching you very carefully as he talks about the digits he had found on his styrofoam cup.
“I didn’t even know that he’d written something did Julius really do that?” You question with both confusion and embarrassment colouring your face a soft pink.
“Yes and it made me so jealous-“ Begins Jake in a low voice clocking the loud gulp you make as he continues by saying “I had to enlist Boyle to help me get you a coffee, and see who my competition was but turns out it was just me battling against myself.”
“At least you got the coffee I hope Julius was easy on you-“
“Oh totally the opposite but it made me see what I was fighting for, and I want to stand in your corner if you will let me.” Jake tells you in a voice that has excited butterflies fluttering in your stomach, unless that was because you hadn’t had any lunch.
“Of course I let you we work together-“
“Sure, but I kind of meant outside of work like us having a date styles.” Jake cuts you off with that playful look pinning you in your place as his words finally sink in.
“You’re asking me out on a date?” You ask Jake who silently nods and you follow suit, both wearing ridiculous smiles on your faces.
“Tomorrow night let’s go for a drink-“
“Hopefully I will be able to use my mouth better by then.” You cut off Jake whose brown eyes crinkle with glee whilst you attempt to backtrack what you’d just said.
“You know what I mean-“
“Detectives, what are you both doing out here?” Questions Holt as he leans against the exit door then motions back to the window where at least five other officers are standing and waving at them.
“Oh captain we were just discussing a case-“
“Actually I was asking officer y/n if she would like to accompany me on a date tomorrow evening.” Jake cuts you off with a quick nod aimed at the Captain who remains poised.
“A bit long overdue Peralta but can you both get back to work after y/n answers your question.” Holt nods back a brief smile appearing on his face, as he turns round to rally the rest of his team.
“So that was awkward but if you don’t want to join me for a drink date or it doesn’t even have to be that it could be any date-“
“I’d love to join you for a date.” You cut him off before Jake spirals a look of relief flooding his handsome face.
Hearing banging on the window the pair of you look to see Boyle and Terry, both of them grinning manically as you slowly take a happy sip from your coffee, feeling Jake watch you sends a shiver down your back.
“I really wanna kiss you but right now isn’t-“
Projected purely by instinct and the knowledge that you were both on the same page, you rise up on tip toes and place a soft kiss on Jake’s cheek which makes him look down, then like the plus side of magnets you both move closer to one another pulled by an electric force of emotions…
“Do I need to have HR on standby?” Terry questions now standing at the door that captain Holt had just vacated, strong arms folded but a cheesy grin on his amused face to show he was just joking.
“Not yet Terry.” Jake explains with a wink aimed in your direction, as you both walk over to the sergeant who finally steps aside to let you inside.
“Wait for it.” You state quietly glancing around the pen which was back in action, what with Boyle on the phone and Gina reading a glossy magazine zero focus aimed at the two detectives.
Not even Hitchcock or Scully who were both eating hotdogs collectively, various condiment stains on both their face and shirts which was a regular occurrence, usually pointed out by Amy who you notice was grinning in your direction.
“I thought we would at least get some acknowledgment.” Jake questions in your right ear making you look away from Santiago, to glance back at Peralta with a firm nod.
The pair of you return to your desks together eyes glued on one another, Jake is the first to look away with a smirk which turns into shock when he spots Boyle, causing you to look around and almost knock your coffee over as a result.
Seeing that Boyle was back to wearing his wings again shaking his butt as he started to dance, then on cue Gina cranks out a Beyoncé song on her phone which truly sets the officer off, arms high above his head as he continues to shake his groove thing.
“Party time!” Scully shouts as he stands from his chair excitedly, throwing his medicated talc powder high in the air, which of course proceeds to cover Hitchcock who starts to choke on the air.
“What is wrong with you?!” Gina shouts switching off the music from her phone.
“Somebody help him!” Scully announces taking the bottle of water from Boyle’s hand as he opens the lid hurriedly.
“Can we please get back to work now everyone?” Holt asks in a tone that suggests everyone gets back to their desk which they do in record time.
“Nothing else to see here move along.” Boyle announces whilst Hitchcock drinks hungrily from the bottle, and Scully hits him on heartily on his back.
“That was some party!” Scully chuckles as he shakes his head with amusement at his best friend’s close call.
“Was that the right amount of acknowledgment you wanted to see?” You ask Jake in your seat across from your desk buddy, the guy of your dreams and possible future all in one package.
“It’s on trend.” Jake nods with a grin aimed right back at you his desk buddy, looking forward to the date and possibility of more.
“You guys are so cute I’m about to cry!” Boyle cries whilst clapping both his hands together, excited and happy as tears fall down his face.
“That’s what I was expecting.” Jake grins whilst pointing at his best bud who is now wiping fresh tears on the back of his hands.
“It’s a great way to end the day.” You reply with a sidelong look at Jake who winks back playfully.
“Just wait until I take you out.” Begins Jake who then hastily adds after hearing what he’d just said “On a date, I meant on a date I’m not gonna try and kill you or anything.”
“Definitely good to know-“
“Oh my god get a room!” Gina yells in obvious disgust as she sashays past their desk her nose scrunched in annoyance.
“That’s definitely gonna become a regular thing now.” Begins Jake with a grin until he hears himself yet again backtracking immediately “I mean the teasing not us getting a room or anything!”
“Of course let’s not jump ahead too quickly Peralta.” You inform him with a laugh right after you clock the look of surprise on his face.
“Keep things slow and steady-“
“Well not that slow.” You cut off Jake leaning back in your chair to take a large gulp of now cold coffee, which you overshoot and instead pour down your chin and patterned blouse.
“Wow, you sure know how to drive a guy crazy y/n.” Jake finishes with a goofy grin as he watches you pull out some tissues from your purse.
“I’ve been told that.” You nod back shyly finally going to make a start on the accident form that you’d been avoiding all afternoon.
What a ride the past two days had been not to mention all the previous months you’d spent pining, only to learn that all it took was to make Jake jealous so he could finally see, what was just across the desk from him.
Looking up you spot Jake staring at you only this time he doesn’t quickly look away, in fact your eyes are locked together and it feels as if nothing else matters, besides being in this new bubble with Jake which sounded like a lot pretty fun place to be…
Cue flashback to three months ago AKA the first week of your relationship, both you and Jake walking into the Bean Stalk coffee shop, after he had spent the night at your apartment you both were left in serious need of some caffeine.
Julius performs a double take the moment he spots them both together, stepping from behind the counter with a wide grin on his face, the pair of you smiling back in response whilst the barista places his hands on his waist.
“So you took my advice then?” Julius questions with a smug smile, as he addresses both of the officers in front of him.
“Definitely not-“
“It kinda helped-“
“See, my work here is finally done!” Julius grins back as Jake and y/n talk over one another.
“You interfered-“
“Sent us in the right direction-“
“You guys are so cute!” Declares Julius with a shake of his head followed by a smile, when he notices Jake winking in your direction.
“We know this.” You begin with an eye roll aimed at the barista who nods back emphatically so you add “ So can we have the usual plus less of your teasing.”
“These coffees are on the house but only if I can wind you up for the foreseeable-“
“That’s my job!” Cuts in Jake with a laugh feeling on top of the world and it had only been one week.
“One Jake is enough.” You deadpan with a nod and a smile at Peralta whose eyes crinkle happily.
“On that note I better start your order-“
“Before that.” Begins Jake with a smirk as he goes on to elaborate by asking “What did y/n say about me was it super embarrassing for her?”
“Hey-“
“A barista never tells but let me just say that she was smitten, all she ever spoke about was her desk buddy who happened to be you.” Julius cuts you off to lament your feelings which wasn’t even a close enough estimation of how you had truly felt.
“Smitten, noice!” Jake states with a goofy grin and even a fist pump in the air with his left hand.
“I am never gonna hear the end of this am I?” You question with an arched eyebrow whilst both Jake and Julius shake their heads in the negative…
Lucky you!

{Coffee is for closers}
~One~
There was nothing quite like grabbing coffee before work, firstly because it tasted better than the crap from your job, and secondly you almost always got a second one for your desk buddy.
Today was no different of course whilst heading to the 99th precinct where you worked as a police detective, via your favourite coffee shop called the “Bean Stalk” which sure was kind of a hipster place, but you liked their drinks and also a certain barista there as well.
Julius was the only guy you could talk to about your problems, seeing how your teammates rarely listened to things which didn’t cover a police case, and your predicament right now wouldn’t be understood by any of them unless you wanted to be laughed at.
Thankfully the lunch time rush was over as you pushed open the green wooden door, a thick aroma of coffee enveloping you in a welcoming hug, spotting your friend behind the counter who waves enthusiastically when he notices you watching him.
In another universe you would totally be into Julius, with his thick black curly hair which frames his handsome face, cradling features that wouldn’t go amiss on the front cover of a magazine.
Clearly the guy was out of your league but you had other fish slash detectives to fry, or at the very least get their attention for more than five seconds, but the more you thought about it the more it seemed like an impossible task.
If you were John Wick you would be left with very little choice but to proceed with said task, but thankfully you wasn’t and truth be told it had been a very long time since you’d ridden a horse, but you were digressing it was a tactic that worked well in the precinct but real life was a very different story.
How did it all end up like this? Late twenties in a kick ass job which you loved, but also harbouring a ridiculous crush, on a guy who was both incredibly good at his job and attractive as hell yet he didn’t have an actual clue about your feelings.
Of course the other members of your team at the precinct had an idea, it was extremely hard to keep a secret in that place but your desk buddy, Jake Peralta who sat opposite you at work was completely oblivious yet still you carried some tiny degree of hope.
But not for the other detectives who all teased you mercilessly, almost as if you had travelled back in time to high school minus the braces and terrible fringe, the one that still made you cringe internally whenever you saw the old pictures at your parents house.
…so any taunting was usually creatively aimed at your pretty obvious feelings, towards said guy at work and not how messy your hair was that day.
Wishing for the line to go down quicker you contemplate using your police badge, but more than anything you just wanted to get to work, hand Jake his coffee and get back to fighting crime on the streets of Brooklyn.
Because it wasn’t as if your desk buddy was rude when you offered him the coffee, but short of writing him a letter explaining yourself or even sending him some flowers, you were reduced to treating him to coffee until he got the hint that you liked him.
…which obviously hadn’t actually happened yet, so you felt as if the awkwardly shaped window of opportunity was in fact, getting smaller and smaller so you weren’t holding out much hope at all to be brutally honest.
Jake was incredibly observant up to a point yet when it came to you, he clearly wasn’t interested because something would’ve happened by now, and waiting for him to finally ask you out was quickly becoming a bore to say the least.
Often working on various cases together which clearly was fun, but Jake was never far without his best friend Boyle by his side, who definitely knew that something was up but you remained professional…at least several attempts had been made previously.
Cue flash back of when you were going to approach Jake after a morning meeting, staying behind in the same room as him whilst he spoke to the squads Captain, a serious gentleman named Raymond Holt who was incredibly headstrong and knew something was up with you immediately.
“What’s wrong y/n?” Holt a man with a penchant for getting directly to the point asks, causing you to stop in your tracks as you notice Jake glancing over.
“I’m just waiting-“
“Clearly I can see that so what’s the matter detective?” Holt asks again his demeanour not even changing one iota, which makes you feel stupid to say the very least.
“Oh, I just wanted to talk about the speech you gave this morning sir very rousing stuff!” You commend Holt with a wide smile, and even a fist pump raised high above your head, one that causes Jake to look away with a grin on his face.
“This could’ve waited detective-“
“Yes of course apologies sir, I will go back to find my work now.” You cut off the captain with an awkward nod, sounding as if you had somehow mislaid your desk, alongside your mind at the very same time.
Noticing the smirk on Jake’s face as you hurry out of the briefing room, almost makes the humiliation worth while but then you proceed to walk straight into Terry Jefferods, who isn’t someone you can miss standing over six feet with muscles that intimidated a lot of people.
“Sorry.” You had muttered spotting the look that your superior was wearing, almost as if he wanted to grin at you but something was stopping him from doing so, when he clocks the captain watching the scene reach its natural climax he walks off with a nod.
The sectioned office in which you worked was affectionately called the pen and was chaotic at best, and downright dangerous at worst because there were definitely some bad people on the streets of Brooklyn, but either way you loved your job just not the obvious crush which had yet to fade away into obscurity.
“So, the usual then for yourself and lover boy?” Questions Julius cutting into your thoughts that makes you glance up sharply from the counter seeing how you were now at the front.
“Both large-“
“Is that sending out the right message?” Cuts in Julius with a laugh when he spots the pink blush instantly heating your cheeks.
“There is no message-“
“That’s the problem! You need to write him an email or better yet just tell the guy how you feel, because you’re moping around is even depressing me.” Julius explains with an arched eyebrow after cutting you off, for at least the third time in this already short exchange of words.
“Not today.” You inform him feeling your resolve go because Julius had a good point, what was stopping you from writing that email or hell even just approaching Jake to ask him out for a drink.
It was you, you were the one holding yourself back, and it was really becoming a bad look right now one that you weren’t even sure how to proceed with…
“Where did my blue file go?!” Jake Peralta snaps, whilst hastily knocking various folders, papers and other crap around on his already messy desk.
“Er, isn’t it in your hand Jake?” Charles Boyle colleague and lifetime friend, questions in a low voice, not exactly sure why his best friend was in such a mood all of a sudden.
“What’s wrong little bird?” Gina Linetti social media mogul asks, pausing briefly from composing her latest Tweet, to glance up from her phone which was a pretty weird phenomenon all of its own.
“I’m just a little stressed-“
“There is only one thing to help with that and the answer is couples massage.” Boyle begins cutting off Jake to reward him with the following tangent as he continues “But you haven’t got a partner have you which just adds to your stress I bet, boy how the hell do you do it Jake!”
“Thanks for the advice Charles but I’m happy how I am, the three amigo’s but it’s just me because I’m the only amigo that I need right now.” Jake states back in his nonchalant voice that not even he believed himself.
“How long has it been?” Gina shouts out loud aiming the question at the detective as she elaborates “ Not to like get all up in your business Jake, but I’ve not seen you with anyone in a long time!”
“A gentlemen never tells.” Jake begins with a goofy grin plastered across his face as he adds “But the last thing on my mind is meeting someone right now, and I’m kind of confused by how this conversation has turned on me.”
“We’re just worried about you Jake.” Boyle states with a shrug as if to soften the blow of his words.
“Me? I’m cool, super cool and super fly, like so cool and very much fly-“
“Well basically you sound like you’re concussed right now.” Jokes Gina watching as Jake repeats the word cool, at least ten more times like his life literally depended on it.
“Jake is fine-“
“Can you both cut it out talking about me as if I’m not here, when clearly I am it’s just I need some decent coffee that’s all.” Jake nods cutting off whatever Boyle was about to say, ignoring the look that his friend was rewarding Gina with in this moment.
“Any coffee in particular?” Questions Gina in a very telling voice, one which makes Jake suddenly stop nodding his head.
“Just coffee, something obviously drinkable at least.” States Jake pulling a face as he knocks his red mug to one side, the stale aroma of cold coffee attacking his nostrils which does absolute zero for his mood.
“So where does this coveted coffee actually come from then Jake?” Cuts in Boyle with a pointed look, complete with folded arms on his desk as if to almost hammer the question home.
“You know, somewhere near Flatbush the name has something to do with a nursery tale I’m sure-“
“Jake and the bean stalk!” Cuts in Gina with a sharp chuckle purely at her oldest friend’s expense.
“I’m pretty sure that it’s Jack-“
“Boyle, Gina is just being mean and ridiculously on trend which I find only mildly offensive right now.” Jake cuts off Charles in the middle of explaining a pretty obvious joke.
“Where is the lie Jake?” Begins Gina standing from her desk with her head held high as she reminds them both diplomatically “Where is the lie.”
“What’s wrong with everyone today?” Jake questions placing a hand over his face, because he truly didn’t need to know the answer right this second.
“Wait until your desk buddy gets here.” Boyle announces in a ridiculous tone, one that Jake didn’t appreciate either at this present moment.
Glancing at the empty desk opposite him Jake wonders when you will be arriving, he enjoyed talking to you about movies that Boyle hadn’t seen, or ganging up together on Terry whenever he got defensive about his favourite yoghurt flavour of the week.
Noticing that Boyle was watching him with a wide smile, Jake averts his brown eyes from your desk pulling a face at his friend who just continues to grin back, this causes him to get up quickly because Jake definitely needed a swift five minutes to go and cool down in private…
Watching as Julius finishes up with your drinks, you glance down at your cell phone to notice that time was ticking on, and the last thing that you needed was to be called out by Captain Holt or even worse Jake himself.
Of course you could hold your own because sarcasm was your one true weapon, that you could easily wield against the rest of the team whenever needed, seeing that emotions ran high sometimes but having Holt catch you running late now that was a death wish.
“Order for the clueless cop!” Julius nods at you with a smile, quickly chucking a Sharpie pen down on the counter as he chases his statement with a swift wink.
“I’m almost on duty you know, I could happily arrest you-“
“Yeah but I would just charm my way out of getting cited, you however need help so you kinda need me on your side.” Julius laughs back, as you hurriedly pick up the takeaway tray, ready to leave with at least your head held high.
Finally with drinks in hand you then notice the eye roll from Julius, which makes you smirk back awkwardly because he obviously knew the whole story, and the pitying look on his face makes you quickly pause for thought.
“I will sort it out.” You inform him with a firm nod and a fake smile, notably plastered on for your face for good luck.
“Just go talk to the guy you work with him, and ignoring it is only going to make things way more awkward.” Julius nods as he cuts you off with yet another truth bomb, he was full of them this morning.
“But what if he doesn’t listen or even worse lets me down, I would have to move to another precinct!” You demand far louder than planned, cringing internally because this very moment was going to haunt you for days now.
“Next!” Yells Julius which makes you tut and turn round to suddenly notice, that there was now a queue gathering in the shop.
“Guess I will have to figure it all out for myself then.” You mutter out loud trying to move past customers quickly, so you could get outside for some fresh Brooklyn air.
But instead you are met with civilians who barely move out of your way, either because of the uniform you had on, or they could just tell how terrible your love life was which was pretty dire for those in the back.
What with that one guy you dated who had turned out to be wanted for indecent exposure, or the dude who had seemed good on paper but then he would yell at people, be it on a date or even in front of the tv he would shout till bright red in the face because he was always right.
…spoiler alert he wasn’t and you both soon broke up after he bumped into an ex, and you was kicked to the curb newly single all over again.
Which was fine of course you weren’t looking for a man to define you, but one who liked the same films as you did and had nice brown eyes would do, it truly wasn’t as if you were asking for much just a chance for a normal date or two would be nice.
Yet having frequented this very coffee shop for numerous months now, you were quite close to the staff especially Julius who gave you extra syrup, and the same advice recycled every week which you completely ignored in favour of acting like yourself.
…so it wasn’t as if you were all alone you met people and had your old college friends, but they were all mostly partnered up whilst you were a Lone Ranger or someone just usually mistaken for a loner.
But with your chin held high in the air you now make your way into work, holding the cardboard takeaway tray close to your chest praying that you weren’t moments away from dropping it, because everyone would have a field day if you walked into work covered in coffee especially the perfectionist officer Amy Santiago.
…who was nearly finished with one of the latest books you had let her borrow, the pair of you starting a book club alongside Boyle, who was very interested in the romance stories that you both adored in equal measures.
Only the choice of books were starting to get more spicier, which Amy claimed she didn’t mind but the look that she wore on her face told you differently, meanwhile Boyle was busy annotating aforementioned books to death and even quoting them in the briefing room out loud.
Cue flashback to only last week when Boyle was giggling away to himself in the briefing room, causing Jake who was of course sat next to him turn round to face you and Amy, with a funny look on his face as you shrugged back at him.
“Am I going to be the only one to ask what the hell are you laughing at?” Jake questions at Boyle who quickly nods back, and then pulls out the book clubs latest pick from his lap.
“Lust blooms.” Jake begins reading the cover with wide eyes, whilst Amy closes hers and you find a smile playing suggestively on your own face.
“Y/n recommended it for book club.” Boyle states with a wink in your direction, which instantly wipes the smile clean away from your lips.
“And is it good?”questions Jake glancing back to give you an interest look, with a smirk that was threatening to blossom at any moment.
“A good read so far-“
“What y/n means is that there is a lot of spice in this book, it’s giving me inspiration to say the least!” Boyle cuts you off which causes Amy to bury her face in her hands.
“I can’t read it!” Amy bellows far louder than necessary whilst you pat her gently on the head.
“But you like it?” Jake asks aiming the question at you with a wink.
“Of course I suggested the author!” You remind him causing Boyle to hold two thumbs up, which of course Jake notices as he turns back round in his seat.
“Maybe Jake can pick up a copy and you can read it together?” Boyle asks which causes Jake to break out in a cough, and you narrow your eyes back at the shorter detective.
Things had then proceeded to worsen when Terry walks in and spots the book, sitting cover up on the desk which portrays a couple standing half naked covered in red roses, causing him to point at the book with a sly smile on his face.
“My wife wants me to read this with her, it’s supposed to be really steamy.” Terry nods as he picks up the book to study the cover.
“So, everyone is reading this besides me-“
“And me!” Cuts in Amy talking over Jake who was fiddling with a blue biro pen in his hands.
“Well like I said what if you buy a copy or better yet just read y/n’s when she is finished.” Boyle nods back excitedly warming to his idea.
“Does it have any gun fights or at least one hostage situations in it?” Jake asks in a silly voice, which meant he was clearly teasing you.
“It isn’t Die hard.” You retort back ready with a quip that causes Jake to smile widely in your direction.
“You know my favourite movie-“
“Everyone knows that you love Die hard, Jake.” You inform him with a soft laugh looking back at Amy, who was currently wiggling her eyebrows in your line of vision.
Which causes you to glance back at Jake to see him staring at you, almost as if you had something stuck on your face, silently you brush the back of your hand over your cheeks and mouth just to make sure.
“Jake, you’re staring!” Hisses Boyle and it has the desired effect, as Jake coughs again and catches the look on Terry’s face as he walks over to the podium.
You ignore the look of pure glee that Boyle was currently wearing, in favour of Amy who has a smile on her’s but she is eagerly opening a fresh page on her notepad, choosing a black pen to write notes as you wonder what it was Jake had been looking at.
“Do I have something on my face?” You ask Amy who ignores you, to listen to Terry instead who has started the briefing already.
“You look good.” Jake answers then realising what he has said, he nods awkwardly and turns back round in his seat avoiding you for the rest of the day.
The memory makes you sigh but gripping tighter onto the takeaway tray, you head onwards with thoughts of certain scenes from Lust Blooms, causing a slow heat to spread across your face because it had been a great read…
“Why is this still happening?” Jake shouts with equal parts anger and annoyance, that are both threaded through his question, as he glares at the photocopier which still wasn’t working.
“It’s Thursday morning Jake what could have possibly gone wrong already?”Questions Scully a well seasoned police officer, with an idiotic grin that was firmly plastered across his face, as he slowly spins round in his office chair like a Bond villain minus the cat.
“More than you know Scully-“
“Are you angry Jake because y/n isn’t here at work yet?” Hitchcock another old timey officer asks with a smile on his face which quickly disappears, when Scully chokes on his drink spraying chocolate milkshake all over his partner against crime.
“What has y/n got to do with the damn photocopier breaking?” Jake snaps back rewarding his team members with a dark look, whilst Gina starts to laugh out loud, making even that sound like a scathing insult to his own ears.
“Y/n better hurry up or she’s gonna be late for her shift.” Amy states with her brown eyes fixed on the clock, then she quickly glances them back at Jake who rolls his own as a silent response.
“Probably all of those books that y/n carries around are weighing her down-“
“Hey! Don’t ever diss the books Jake they help to keep us sane at night.” Amy states with a determined look on her face.
“I bet y/n is just grabbing some coffee.” Boyle declares whilst placing his hands on his slim waist, a look of mischief spreading across his features like a real life Mr Grinch.
…especially whilst wearing his light green shirt which was a very close shade, to the misunderstood character that he had dressed up as last Christmas.
“Did y/n go on a coffee run? Will she be bringing doughnuts back as well!” Hitchcock questions excitedly, sitting up a little higher in his chair at the idea of soft and sugary doughnuts in the office.
“No, I guarantee that only one of us is getting coffee hand delivered to us today.” Amy deadpans with a hint of a smirk playing into her obvious statement.
At least five pairs of eyes all look over at Jake who presses his back against the photocopier, almost as if to protect himself from the pointed glances that his teammates were currently giving him.
“Why is everybody staring at Jake what did he do now?” Questions Captain Holt walking into his den, to be rewarded by no nods not even a single wave in his direction to be precise.
“I’ve done nothing-“
“We are placing bets to see if y/n brings in a coffee for Jake again today.” Gina cuts off her oldest friend with an excited shake of her head.
“It’s not everyday.” Begins Jake stepping slowly away from the damn photocopier as he continues with his statement “Also why does anyone care if y/n brings in a coffee for me, clearly I’m the greatest detective slash genius in the building.”
“You’re an idiot Jake.” Amy retorts in a throwaway voice, that even has both Scully and Hitchcock nodding in agreement.
“That’s hurtful Amy, and slander to boot I demand to see my lawyer!” Jake quips back with a small smile on his face, as he heads back to his desk, only without the blue folder in his hand this time.
“Can we all just get back to some form of work please?” Asks Captain Holt addressing the room as he then tells Gina “Also put me down for ten dollars that officer y/n does in fact bring Peralta a coffee to work.”
“This is ridiculous-“
“Betting will close in five minutes guys so get your predictions in now!” Gina shouts over Jake as Boyle rushes over to her desk, excitedly extracting his wallet from his back pocket.
“Do you really not see what is going on here Jake?” Asks Amy in a low voice, which was smothered in both judgement and exasperation he could easily tell.
“I just want some coffee.” Jake replies weakly complete with a shrug, that makes Amy tut loudly, and then leave her desk to make a quick bet of course against her fellow officer.
Realising that he had left his blue folder over by the copier, Jake grinds his back teeth as he quickly gets up from his seat, ignoring the stupid commotion that his teammates were creating in favour of being the bigger man.
Although Amy’s words were on a loop in his head, what the hell was he missing that everyone else was clearly seeing…
After almost getting knocked down by a group of rambunctious dogs on their walk, and not even receiving an apology from the walkers mouth as they continue to occupy the pavement, which had then caused you to step aside pressed against the brown brick wall gripping onto the takeaway tray in obvious annoyance.
Quickly carrying on with your mission which you chose to continue to fruition, you finally lean off the brick wall and stand your full height then start making your way towards the precinct, hearing your phone start ringing as soon as you reaches the entrance of course.
Unable to grab your cell phone let alone the door handle, you are thankful when someone opens it for you turning round to see a tall guy with thick blonde hair, wearing a faintly smug smile that causes you to silently nod your thanks as you head inside the building.
…why did you always attract the wrong kind of guy? Actively liking them with messy brown hair and playful eyes instead, if only the object of your affection would realise this sometime soon then you wouldn’t be having these insane thoughts.
“Going up?” Questions the guy as he stands next to you, once you’ve both made it through the hectic reception area in one piece, with him wearing a bright yellow visitor lanyard around his thick neck.
“Yep, just waiting for the elevator now.” You nod back awkwardly, wishing that this dude wasn’t standing so close to your side all of a sudden.
Luckily the guy doesn’t talk again as you both walk into the open elevator, hearing it close as it makes its way up one level leaving you wishing, that the blonde wasn’t getting off on your floor but luck definitely was messing you around today.
“Hey, do you need a hand with those coffees?” The blonde guy asks holding out his hands, expecting you to simply hand the drinks over to him.
“Nope all good.” You tell him hurriedly hoping that he would just take the hint.
“I can do it.” The guy remarks flippantly which makes you look up from his hands, complete with an incredulous look on your face.
“I’m good.” You demand using your stern voice that was only ever used, almost exclusively on people misbehaving in the holding cells and quite often on Jake as well.
“Nice smile.” The blond guy winks at the same time that you realise, that thinking about your desk buddy had just given you a physical response.
…like any moment now red and pink cartoon hearts were going to spin around happily over your head.
Thankfully the elevator stops saving you the honour of actually answering the guy, but sadly there is nobody there so you have to continue riding it up with him, looking away from the tall blonde who was more Gina’s type than yours but none of that mattered right this second.
“Which floor?” You eventually ask when the elevator doors slowly close, and the guy is just grinning back smugly it was not a good look.
When he doesn’t even answer your question you press floor four, quickly looking away from him when the elevator starts it’s ascent, holding the coffee’s so tightly in your hands that you feel your fingers shake as a result.
This morning shouldn’t have started this way at all, where the hell was the birdsong that needed to be following you around, and the happy vibes because there was not a single one in sight.
They were all replaced instead by the sweet sounds of an open mouth breather, who was standing right next to you and the immense feeling of dread, the one that only reality could muster and make you feel so awful about that fact unease at how today was going to go.
Stopping on the third floor finally you pray that the blonde guy will now leave, because he keeps checking his cell phone and sending obvious glances in your direction, something that you didn’t want let alone reward this guy with the wrong idea.
…you were definitely not interested in him.
But when no-one steps into the elevator again and the guy doesn’t leave, you watch the doors close in horror realising that he will actually be getting off at your floor, the idea leaves you feeling nauseous as the journey finally arrives at its conclusion your mission almost complete.
With blondie smiling boldly in your direction you ignore it to look swiftly back at the elevator doors, willing them open with your mind or at the very least cursing silently to yourself, until your wish finally comes true and you’re finally free to escape…
Having heard the elevator doors open for the third time Jake slowly spins in his chair, ignoring the excited looks from Boyle that he knew he was receiving, hearing the muffled giggling from across the way but finally spotting you makes him sit up higher in his seat.
Only to see that you wasn’t alone but with some blonde dude in a dark blue suit, towering over you whilst trying to take the coffees from your hands, this alone causes Jake to stand up from his chair with a dark look on his face.
“What’s wrong-“
“Who is that!?” Snaps Jake cutting off whatever Boyle was about to say, shouting far louder than planned when he notices that, both Hitchcock and Scully are giving him amused smiles.
Noticing that Jake was watching you whilst stuck with the blonde guy, the one who was still trying to take the coffee’s from your hands like you were incapable of carrying them, which was seriously starting to piss you off.
Before Jake even thinks about it he walks directly over to you and this guy, clocking the smile that was appearing on your face which makes him know that he was doing the right thing, as he opens his hands out wide for you to give the drinks over to him.
“Let me.” Jake declares with a playful wink in your direction, as you roll your eyes but comply which makes him grin happily back.
“Thanks, Jake.” You reply with a small nod and a smile, happily caught up in the moment of having your desk buddy standing right there.
“Er, do either of you two know Gina-“
“Chad? I told you to wait downstairs!” Gina cuts off the blonde guy, apparently named Chad who is looking at the brunette administrator with wide eyes.
“I’m sorry.” Chad announces then proceeds to look down at his feet with embarrassment, causing both you and Jake to exchange an equally bemused look at one another.
“Let me just walk you back downstairs real quick.” Begins Gina but glancing from Chad back to Jake, she starts to squeal excitedly announcing happily to everyone in the pen that “Jake got coffee again!”
This makes you look at Jake who grins back in your direction, whilst you take one of the cups from the takeaway tray in his hand, letting him keep hold of the other which makes you feel all kinds of happy if only for a moment.
“Is this for me then-“
“Of course it is Jake!” Cuts in Gina with a scoff as she then explains to Chad “ I need to go and pay out the winning bets now.”
Rushing back over to her desk and announcing something about the coffee being delivered, several people rush over to Gina’s desk hell even Captain Holt appears with a fraction of a smile appearing on his face.
“Looks like Holt is in a cheeky mood.” Jake deadpans making you nod back with a smile, walking away from the elevator finally to get to your desk gratefully in one piece.
Noticing the looks from both Rosa and Amy who you thought were on your side, but from the expressions on their faces you were wrong, incredibly wrong because moments later your cell phone starts to ring again.
Ignoring it you turn the screen over so it faces your desk, taking a long drink from your coffee which was just what you needed, that and catching Jake watching you which causes him to leave his desk abruptly.
Debating if you should follow Jake you watch him leave the pen, at least he had his coffee which you knew he appreciated but sometimes a thanks wouldn’t go amiss, or a nice warm hug or even an offer to go and watch a movie at his place…
“Earth to Officer-“
You practically jump out of your skin when returning back to the pen, Gina is standing next to your desk giggling her head off whilst Chad stood next to her like an obedient Labrador, causing you to glare back whilst she walks off literally whistling at the dude in the dark blue suit to follow her.
“Good boy!” Gina praises as he races to her side by the elevator what the hell was happening there, actually you didn’t want to know it was time to just focus on some work instead…
Jake meanwhile wanders around the office floor with his drink in hand, feeling the caffeine awaken something in him now he was finally ready for the day, but what he wasn’t ready for was the digits scrawled on the side of his cup with a Sharpie.
Stopping in his tracks Jake twists his right hand a little to read the name and accompanying number, he didn’t know anyone named Julius so why were their details on his styrofoam cup, seconds later the revelation hits him low in the stomach this number was for you and totally not for him.
This knowledge causes Jake’s jaw to tick at the same time he pulls a face, not even sure why he suddenly felt both angry and jealous to boot, you was his desk buddy funny and sure super cute but that was where the line was supposed to stay.
Cue flashback to a month ago and the team are all out for drinks at Shaw’s bar, Jake is buying after yet another successful win for the nine-nine, and everyone is on such a high especially you who was several shots ahead.
Standing with both Amy and Rosa the three of you were cackling about something, even getting the attention of Gina but when she notices Jake watching, she winks and mouths something about you to him which he didn’t understand.
“Doesn’t officer y/n look shitty?” Jake questions both in a low and disbelieving voice, giving Gina a weird look whilst she shakes her head then proceeds to walk off.
What the hell?!
Instead of overthinking it Jake had proceeded to listen to Boyle instead, him talking about the latest cooking show that he was feasting on, his own words ones that makes Jake pull a face as he starts talking about snails and how delectable they are on your tongue.
“Cut it out Boyle!” Jake grimaces whilst pulling a face, only to emphasise that this wasn’t the time for such a conversation.
Instead he looks back over at the busy bar catching you mid smile, laughing at something Rosa had said making Jake realise, that he suddenly knew exactly what Gina had been trying to tell him.
“Y/n looks pretty.” Jake states using his indoor voice, which causes Boyle to stop talking mid sentence, suddenly wearing a surprised look on his face which is closely followed by a sly grin.
“Well, well, well look whose finally turned round-“
“I just figured out that was what Gina was mouthing to me earlier, I can’t read lips as well as you clearly.” Jake cuts off Boyle before he could start to tease him but he’s too late.
“And why would she say that to you? Had she also caught you staring over at your desk buddy earlier.” Retorts Boyle with such glee, that Jake was worried he was about to break into song, and not for the first time today either.
“I wasn’t-“
“I saw you loud and clear was even going to take a picture on my cell phone, but ended up getting my confused face instead.” Boyle cuts off Jake yet again with a sigh but then watches his friend for a response.
“Please don’t look at me like that.” Begins Jake with a roll of his eyes but when he sees his friend isn’t budging he responds with “Look, cut it out I don’t know what you want from me!”
“Admit it!” Boyle had stated with a pointed finger aimed directly at his best friend slash favourite detective.
“What? That I like seeing my desk buddy outside of work and sure I think she looks pretty sitting over there so what.” Jake starts off defensive but then gives in near the end, as he admits defeat which pleases Boyle greatly.
“I was just kidding? Is this real right now you actually like y/n and-“
“I like working with her and of course the coffees but nothing else!” Jake interjects with narrowed eyes at Boyle who remains strong.
“That’s not what your face is saying!” Sings Boyle with a look of pure joy currently on his, which makes Jake close his eyes in obvious frustration this was definitely gonna become a thing now.
Ever since that night Boyle had most possibly said something to the others, or they had all taken the whole coffee thing way out of context, but why would you give him a coffee cup with some other guys name and number on it?
None of it made sense unless he was looking for clues that weren’t even there, it was his job after all to detect but maybe this was just an accident, either way Jake couldn’t stop glaring at the writing on his cup the reason why still alluding him of course…
“I chose you, let’s go!” Rosa announces later on in the afternoon, causing you to jump out of your skin at the interruption from your colleague yet again.
“Choose me for what?” You question glancing away from Jake’s empty desk, ignoring the arched eyebrow that Rosa delivers with a spiky look in your direction.
“Robbery nearby at a couple owned jewellery shop, I’m leading and I need a second plus you need to get out of that seat.” Rosa states in a voice that suggests, you get up out of your chair like right this second.
“I’m busy-“
“Looks like you’re just sitting here waiting for somebody.” Rosa cuts you off with a fake sweet voice that just oozes sugary sarcasm.
“Fine, let’s go.” You sigh because of course you can’t say no to this, it was your job to help fellow officers and anyway this paperwork right now was driving you insane.
Normally you could work easier if you had the back and forth between Jake and Boyle, it was music to your ears and had nothing, absolutely nothing to do with the fact that your desk buddy was both goofy and funny.
“You’ve got it so bad.” Jokes Rosa with a smug smile on her face, as she notices you checking Jake’s desk once again spotting the pile of takeaway cups.
“I have absolutely no idea what you’re going on about.” You reply with a fake smile that causes Rosa to scoff back in your direction.
Heading to the jewellers on foot because it wasn’t far from the precinct, you listen to Rosa talk about the latest mods on her motorbike, mind drifting back to the cups on Jake’s desk why did he keep them all there?
The answer was obvious because the guy was messy and looking through his desk drawers, quite often gave you a nosebleed or made you gag equally as bad, you needed to just stop looking for clues to this and get on with the real investigation at hand instead.
Needing to focus and be Rosa’s second pair of eyes and ears on this, because the owner of the jewellery store and victim of the break in, was adamant that this was the work of her ex husband and his new girlfriend.
“The guy is trash!” Bobby Rose spits venomously her whole body a jangle of chains and bracelets, as she stamps her red heeled shoes on the shiny black wooden flooring.
At least five six in heels and standing proud but angrily, the woman had long red hair with pointed black nails and nothing out of place, she looked poised and ready for anything, whilst you subtly brush off the crumbs from lunch earlier that were still sitting happily on your purple blouse.
“Ma’am we need to ask you a few questions please, and also someone from forensics will be by soon to assess the crime scene.” Rosa states with a serious look.
“Also do you need anything like a drink or snack to eat?” You ask trying to even out the ying to Rosa’s yang right now.
“Doll, do I look like I eat lunch at all?” Begins Bobby in a nasally Brooklyn accent but then quickly suggests “But I could use a coffee right now do you know the place close by named the Bean stalk?”
As if on cue Rosa tries and fails to smother a noise, something that sounded like a cross between a snort and a giggle, darting a brief look of glee in your direction as you look away from her with embarrassment.
“I know the place-“
“Well, grab us three frothy concoctions but make sure that Julius makes them he’s a god!” Bobby cuts you off with a cackle and a wink as you glance once again at Rosa, then head outside on your new side quest more confused than ever…
Back at his desk finally Jake glowers when he spots the cup from this morning, which was still sat on his desk front and centre from all the others, grabbing it angrily he was about to chuck it in the bin when Boyle suddenly appears at his side also finished for the day.
“Finally tidying up your desk then huh!” Boyle nods with a grin causing Jake to drop the empty cup back down with a crunch.
“Something like that.” Nods back Jake with a grin that hurts his face, because he was so tired and stressed right now this was all so exhausting.
Normally this thing called flirting was easy for him because if he liked someone he would ask them out, simply throw them a couple of jokes and a boss chat up line that would naturally lead to him making a move, only this time he didn’t know where to start because this felt different to meeting someone randomly at a hot dog cart.
Firstly he was jealous that you had some random number on this stupid cup obviously it wasn’t meant for him, and secondly well he had just admitted to himself that he wanted more from you, and that alone made Jake make a weird noise in the back of his throat.
…which was closely followed by an awkward smirk appearing on his face, one that of course Boyle notices straight away.
“What’s that smile for!” Begins Boyle with a grin right back, until he looks down at Jake’s desk something catching his eye as he asks him “Who the hell is Julius?”
“I don’t know-“
“Is that y/n’s cup did she get a guys number at the bean stalk?” Boyle questions his voice raising in mutual confusion, one that equally matches the look on Jake’s face.
“I need to find out.” Jake demands with a firm nod, but he closes his eyes when he hears Boyle start squealing excitedly next to him.
“So you’re finally admitting it!?” Boyle shouts luckily there aren’t many people in the pen right now, just Terry and some others who all give the two men various funny looks but thankfully don’t ask any questions.
“Don’t start, let’s go for a beer.” Jake replies picking up his cell phone from his desk, ignoring the look of obvious glee that is apparent on Boyle’s face right now.
“So this is where it all begins then!” Boyle replies with a wide smile and a giggle as he then adds “ The romantic start to your story that sees me once again playing Cupid.”
“Please don’t come into work wearing those awful feather wings again-“
“It’s a shame it isn’t Valentine’s Day it could’ve been the perfect theme!” Boyle cuts off Jake who pushes his chair under his desk, then walks off with a firm shake of his head.
“I haven’t even said that I like-“
“Not right this second but you have several times already this past week, so I think that deep down you know what to do.” Boyle interjects with a know-it-all smile aimed at his best friend, who was stood by the elevator with a frustrated look on his face.
It was the end of his shift and Jake was now regretting the whole beer idea, whenever provoked or even worse encouraged by something, Boyle was relentless and he knew that this was going to be such an occasion.
Truth be told Jake needed a push to try and figure things out, so with his best bud Boyle by his side there was no time like the present, so with pitchers of beer in hand and bowl of fries at their table soon things would hopefully start to make sense…

~COMING SOON~
I’ve FINALY finished my first Brooklyn Nine Nine story and i will be posting it soon..
It’s a Jake Peralta x f! Reader special with all the gang and you as the aforementioned officers desk buddy, with a penchant for one goofy detective in particular who eats way too much sour candy, and needs help from his ride or die Boyle when a situation has him second guessing everything.
Will anybody read it?!

Anders Holmvick makes me ovulate and this is probably the “least” attractive of his roles [that I know of] I feel like I’m going to cum when I see him in anything else. He only gets finer every episode of the podcast too
Do you have favorite Anders whx episodes or movies? I could talk about that man for hours 🗣️
I love the episode where it’s Anders birthday and he steals Montez’ car, also the Half Christmas one that’s so good as well they are all good!🤣

To your AO3 I go! Also I’m listening to the podcast to stretch out the time it takes me to finish the series. I already plan on watching game over, man! once I’m done with this and then how to be single. Afraid I will go too feral for these people, especially Ders. I truly don’t care I just want to look at Anders but the podcast is funny af! Kyle is a babe too
I didn’t watch the show when it came out so this is my first watch and I rewind every time Ders looks good it takes me a lot longer to finish episodes because of him. He’s SO pathetic I want him SO bad. I’m the down bad anon in I-smoke-chapstick’s inbox too. Literally so desperate for him it’s making me look pathetic! I’d fuck him so hard but make him shut the fuck up with the insults.
Re: Blake he’s definitely a build up to sex/smut type of guy and I love a good build up.
Link to my chaotic AO3 page🤣
Oh the podcast is so funny I adore it especially hearing Blake giggle at everything it’s too cute.
Also Game over, man is hilarious and should’ve been way more popular Blake and Anders are SO HOT in it!
I get it when you’re down bad you stay down and become feral it’s where I’m still at and it’s not going anywhere!
Yay! I love a great build up if you read any of my workaholics stories let me know.

I’m not sure how to send a message without it coming from my main blog instead of my side blog (blondersholmvick) maybe if you send me a message first? I love to talk about workaholics but bore everyone with my hyper fixations!
Will follow and send you a message🙌
There is no way that you will bore me I’m on totally the same page😍

Totally clogging up your inbox so I will let this be the last one of the night. I’m afraid it to finish my first watch of Workaholics and it sucks that it’s my hyper fixation since it will suck so bad when I don’t have an unwatched episode to look forward to. I’m listening to the podcast as well because my hyper fixations alway consume me. How do you cope with this in such a small fandom and not many posts about it on here?
Anon, I love the messages it’s made my day come and chat to me and our mutual love of our boys!
I felt exactly like that when I revisited the show earlier this year, but you can easily rewatch it again and again it’s something I do often🤣
Yep its consumed me for six months straight so far, I’m well into the podcast and it’s so funny also I watch YT interviews plus shows they’ve been in and screenshot EVERYTHING I could post Blake all the damn day!
I’m a year younger than Blake so I started watching the show way back in 2011, and this year got into it all over again after a five year break and now I consume their IG’s, the pod and just whatever I can lol
No pressure to go off anon and talk but always come and chat🥰

100% with you on brainstorming but never following through I have nine different notes on my phone that I never finished and probably will not post. It’s a shame because I really like my ideas and the fandom on here is small.
On that note, as resident Anders horny poster, please do share all Ders blurbs, headcanons, and fic ideas you have. Nothing is too small when you’re this thirsty, it doesn’t have to be nsfw but I wouldn’t not not like it if it was 🤭
Same, I have so many notes and yes the fandom is small here, but there are several cool AF IG pages and a bunch of stories on AO3.
I have some ideas for Anders, I even have two stories posted here and on AO3 of dem boys if you dare read them lol.
I get the thirst it’s real and I’m in my FERAL ERA💦

Straight missed your reply but retcon small dick Blake and give me doesn’t know his fucking potential until he finally gets a girlfriend Blake!
I’m down bad for Ders but Blake is too much of a hottie to not give attention to. I want to twirl his hair on my finger and kiss him.
The ONE thing I want in life is for Blake Henderson to realise his potential, in the sack, it’s what the fans truly want (me)🤣but I will warn you I write A LOT so do you want this a smut thing or a build up to 🔥 type deal?
Blake and Ders are my fave equally🥰💋
