Those Who Rule.

Heaven, Hell, and the inbetween of Purgatory have existed longer than mortals can possibly comprehend. The concept of having to choose between moral evil and moral good and having to face the eternal consequences for either decision: paradise or damnation… it torments with people. But what about those who already roam among the kingdom of the Afterlife?

JUDGES

To maintain control and peace, there are 7 Judges that rule over the courts in the Afterlife. Each judge represents both a sin and a virtue, making them unique to others who wander. 

Azuma Yukishiro - Prudence/Lust Hisoka Mikage - Fortitude/Sloth Tasuku Takato - Faith/Pride Omi Fushimi - Hope/Gluttony Izumi Tachibana - Temperance/Wrath Tsumugi Tsukioka - Charity/Greed Sakuya Sakuma - Justice/Envy

Although every Judge has both virtue and sin, making them impartial to being part of Heaven or Hell, some Judges hold more favour to one trait than the other…

And then there is Sakyo Furuichi: the Head Judge that makes all final rulings on cases in all aspects of the Afterlife. He also manages aspects of each souls fate; both mortal and immortal. He is, however, not in charge of this. He has neither sin nor virtue. 

There are also the Heads of Department.

Head Angel - Guy Head Devil - Chikage Utsuki

They manage and run their individual areas with great care as that is the job they’ve been assigned. There is no head of Purgatory.

Finally there is the all-knowing building stone to the Afterlife. The one who engraves the truths and endings of peoples’ lives and the way that souls in the afterlife spend their time here. The pillar of afterlife being none other than Tsuzuru Minagi. Fate.

It all depends on him.

RULES

Rules are elementary in the Afterlife to ensure all souls and spirits remain in the states that Fate had allowed them to be in. When rules are broken, punishments and reprimands are declared by the High Court. When Angels break rules, punishments are more severe but short term since Angels are expected to uphold high standards but also deserve to enjoy their afterlife. If an Angel is Cconsumed by sin, usually at the hands of a Devil, the Angel can be corrupted into a Devil corruption is a gruesome process where the Angels’ wings are severed off and their halo is forcefully removed from their head. They can never regrow their wings. Often their memory is also erased depending on the severity of the corruptions.

If an action is too severe the being may be forced to fade. since this is the Afterlife and all beings are immortal or already dead, beings instead will fade away. Angels fade into clouds; Devils face into smoke and ash. This does not occur often.

Rules here are as follows.

Angels and Devils may interact but at great risk. Any relationship of any kind, excluding familial but including love and fatred, is formed between Angels and Devils, both parties will be punished by having to fade.

Angels and Devils are forbidden to enter their respective areas unless granted permission

Duelling is forbidden. it often happens as it is a minor rule that is applicable to mainly Devils. Angels and Devils may duel as this is usually to prevent the Devil from causing harm, but this still must be reviewed by at least one other Judge.

If a Devil’s curse is broken, the curse must be altered slightly . All Devils must suffer after all.

Free spirits of preciously free spirits are able to wander as they please even after they are declared Angel or Devil, however, it is recommended they stay in their specific area to prevent harm to themselves ot curiousity of what happens in their opposing world.

Both Angels and Devils are free to enter the mortal world but they are not to bring attention to themselves. They are not to interact with mortals unless permitted.

Angels and Devils may also observe mortal activity in some areas of the afterlife. In these areas Angels and Devils are allowed to be together.

Judges come to all final decisions.

Fate should not be twisted.

Once you become an Angel or a Devil you stay as such.

These rules date back to eras before the current inhabitants of the Afterlife came to be.

Changes are already pending.

Legends of the Afterlife.

There was once an Angel and a Devil who once resided within their original homes. It was peaceful. There was nothing to disrupt this land - until they began to dream of something more. The world they roamed deserved more than just this. They met under usual circumstances at the time - considering Angels and Devils kffen communicated then as the Afterlife was sstill developing. Their ideas were unique; they introduced an Afterlife where the focus was change rather than static labels.

Their efforts were in vain though, since the Devil had geown deeply envious of the Angel’s power due to his great creativity.

The Angel too was almost corrupted due to his undeniable passion for this project of his. The Angel ignored all those around him for this one potential idea, including those he cared about the most.

Chaos ensued across the Afterlife, leading to a great war. The Devil grew bitter of bis one companion losing interest in both him and the world they had created together. There was no returning from this.

A young spirit at the time was able to note down these events, however it is largely considered myth rather than history since no Judge has recollection of this happening.

Except for one.

PURGATORY

Not many souls really enter purgatory. It was once an abandoned ruin until the new Judges and Tsuzuru’s graduation as Fare had introduced some vast improvements to the system - albeit not perfect. A Messenger spirit - Misumi Ikagura roams when he has no mail to deliver since he is neither Angel nor Devil, but that’s about it.

Until one day a new soul enters…

A young man named Citron enters the ruins. He aimlessly wanders until the Judges stop panicking and assign him a charismatic and charming Devil to annoy him while making arrangements.

We’ll see how that turns out.

Those Who Roam

HELL

Devils linger and abide in Hell. Each Devil is assigned both a sin as well as a curse thay coincides with their most deepest inecurities and otherwise uncomplementary traits as a reminder of why they are here. This is torture after all. All Devils are only trusted to guard Hell and, in some special cases, to torture those who are new or in Purgatory (although this is a rare opportunity).

The Devils are listed as follows…

Banri Settsu - Pride A rather irritating and competitive member of Hell that tends to pick fights with literally anything for no good reason. His curse is his lack of ability to understand or comprehend emotions: picked specifically due to his lack of difficulty in every other aspect of life. He has emotions and feelings.. but he will never fully be able to interpret the feeling of grief or love.  Itaru Chigasaki - Sloth A rather relaxed and laid back Devil who tends to not be bothered with… well anything! Or at least thats how he seems. His curse forbids him from ever truly expressing how hes feeling. His emotions are dulled down and even the slight feeling of something like excitement or rage could introduce stabbing pains in his heart. Masumi Usui  Masumi has no particular sin or curse as he is the equivalent of an “anti-cupid”. His job is to break the relationships that simply weren’t meant to be. He lacks a lot of knowledge of love. It’s a hard job to break hearts. He’s used to it. Kazunari Miyoshi - Envy Although some may interpret him to be laid back, others would interpet him as full on. his lack of filter can be … challenging to deal with. However his curse tends to shut him after he reaches a large strength of emotions no matter how much he wishes to express them. His one brother watched as his wings were forcefully cut off from his shoulder blades and the halo was taken from his head. He feels the occassional headache from the loss of the halo, but the worst pain is the permanent scars on his shoulders that sting and burn. He has no memory of his brother or anything prior to his corruption. Yuki Rurikawa - Wrath A much younger addition to the roster that tends to be fiesty, as all of his emotions are constantly amplified and he is unable to control them. This causes immense pain to him, but luckily thanks to certain Hell Squad, he’s able to tough it out. It’s humiliating but no one minds. Taichi Nanao Taichi lacks a curse or sin for he was too a lost spirit that a Judge decided to pity. Unfortunately, Taichi did not have it as easy as Azami, since he - instead of finding peace in Heaven - was accidentally lead down a much more sinister path. His corruption was the first. His corruption leaves stains of guilt for all those involved. Yet he seems rather at home as a Devil. Chikage Utsuki As a Head Devil he has no sin, yet he has a curse. His curse is to constantly lie and decieve - something that was both annoying and hurtful to those he cared for.

Those Who Roam.

HEAVEN

Angels reside in Heaven and each Angel is assigned only a virtue. An Angel is held to high expectations but are otherwise known to live peaceful and joyful lives - especially compared to that of those in Hell. There are many Angels with various roles, but we will focus more on the Angels that lack a true role and just keep guard and maintain Heaven itself. When Angels feel very strongly, particular flowers associated with themselves begin to bloom on rapidly. How curious…

Of the Angels there are..

Juza Hyodo - Temperance A highstanding Angel that tends to keep quiet and to himself. He also has an interest in watching humans from a distance and observing their many daily habits. Muku Sakisaka - Justice* The first Angel to have been guided through his mortal life by a Guardian Angel after a particularly large change in the rules of the afterlife. What may come of these new changes are uncertain.. Tenma Sumeragi Tenma has no particular virture as he is actually one fraction of a “cupid” system where arrows and other shenanigans are used to induce love onto others. He is still an Angel, just with a different duty. He as a lot to learn yet. Yuki Rurikawa - Fortitude* Was actually once a Devil but due to changes in the rules of the Afterlife, he was granted the ability to become a Guardian Angel. He was merely a test subject.. and a test subject gone wrong at that. Was being a Devil truly worse than pretending you haven’t met someone who you’ve known for so long? Homare Arisugawa - Prudence He chants poems without a care in the world and he preaches love to all those around him: even those who don’t particularly care about his words of wisdom. Interestingly, he never seems to be wrong about his philosophies. Azami Izumida Has no virtue for he was once a wandering spirit. A certain Judge seemed to particularly pity him and another spirit decided to set them both as permanent free spirits. Azami chose to reside in Heaven, so he deemed an Angel. Guy The Head Angel has no assigned virtue simply because he adopts all virtues as the Head. He keeps an eye on Heaven and watches it dearly as his own tender garden that he wants to grow and prosper.

* note these characters will only become angels very late in the story lol
