I'm a big fan of wizards-as-programmers, but I think it's so much better when you lean into programming tropes.

A spell the wizard uses to light the group's campfire has an error somewhere in its depths, and sometimes it doesn't work at all. The wizard spends a lot of his time trying to track down the exact conditions that cause the failure.

The wizard is attempting to create a new spell that marries two older spells together, but while they were both written within the context of Zephyrus the Starweaver's foundational work, they each used a slightly different version, and untangling the collisions make a short project take months of work.

The wizard has grown too comfortable reusing old spells, and in particular, his teleportation spell keeps finding its components rearranged and remixed, its parts copied into a dozen different places in the spellbook. This is overall not actually a problem per se, but the party's rogue grows a bit concerned when the wizard's "drying spell" seems to just be a special case of teleportation where you teleport five feet to the left and leave the wetness behind.

A wizard is constantly fiddling with his spells, making minor tweaks and changes, getting them easier to cast, with better effects, adding bells and whistles. The "shelter for the night" spell includes a tea kettle that brings itself to a boil at dawn, which the wizard is inordinately pleased with. He reports on efficiency improvements to the indifference of anyone listening.

A different wizard immediately forgets all details of his spells after he's written them. He could not begin to tell you how any of it works, at least not without sitting down for a few hours or days to figure out how he set things up. The point is that it works, and once it does, the wizard can safely stop thinking about it.

Wizards enjoy each other's company, but you must be circumspect about spellwork. Having another wizard look through your spellbook makes you aware of every minor flaw, and you might not be able to answer questions about why a spell was written in a certain way, if you remember at all.

Wizards all have their own preferences as far as which scripts they write in, the formatting of their spellbook, its dimensions and material quality, and of course which famous wizards they've taken the most foundational knowledge from. The enlightened view is that all approaches have their strengths and weaknesses, but this has never stopped anyone from getting into a protracted argument.

Sometimes a wizard will sit down with an ancient tome attempting to find answers to a complicated problem, and finally find someone from across time who was trying to do the same thing, only for the final note to be "nevermind, fixed it".

With his signature needed to write off the concerns raised by the investors -- owing to dragons -- he faces the true, unpretending local life, and finds himself blindsided by the forms it takes.

Since the whole thing with NaNoWriMo has gone down, I've noticed that one of their former sponsors, Ellipsus, has cut contact with NaNoWriMo because they do not support their stance on AI; I didn't know what Ellipsus was, but upon further research I've found that they are a writing platform that works a lot like Google Docs and Microsoft Word, only with a heavier leaning on the story-writing aspect and connecting with other writers - and they also completely denounce any use of AI, both in the writing process itself and in the use of their platform. I really appreciate that.

Since this is the case (and since I've noticed Google has begun implementing more AI into their software), I've decided to give Ellipsus a try to see if it's a good alternative to Google Docs (my main writing platform). It's completely free and so far, I've found it simple to use (although it is pretty minimal in its features), and I really like the look of it.

I figured I'd spread the word about this platform in case any of you writers would want to give it a try, and if you do, let me know how you like it!

Welcome to the 1D Family Fic Fest! It's a fest dedicated to family. Family can take on different forms. Family can mean happiness, anger, sadness or any other emotion you can think of.

There can be different definitions for and feelings associated with the word and this fest is for all the different forms of family. So be creative!

Rules:

Minimum word count will be 8.000 words, there is no maximum count

every trope is allowed as long as the central topic is "family"

every fic must have at least one of the 1D members as main character

there doesn't have to be a pairing and every rating is allowed

you can also sign up with your own prompt when sign-ups are open

every author must be 18+

when it's time for posting you will have to post your fic in the fest collection (account on ao3 required!) which will be moderated and unrevealed. Please make sure to create a moodboard for your fic post (No AI images will be allowed!)

No WIP's will be allowed, the fic must be finished by the time of posting

make sure to tag the fics appropriately

the fest is not anonymous you can post snippets, teasers etc. , make sure to tag this account on tumblr or X for a reblog/repost.

Wordplay 8.0 Basic Info

All participants must be at least 18 years old

This fest is open to all pairings/groupings that include a member of One Direction.

Every fic must include or be inspired by that week’s prompt.

There are no word count restrictions or other qualifiers outside of the previous points. The fics can have any rating, gender, identity, relationship or no, etc that you so desire.

There will be no content moderation. Authors are required to use any and all appropriate tags for the content of their fics.

Prompts will be assigned weekly for five weeks total and all participants will have one week to write their fic. More details regarding the posting and schedule will be available come late July or early August.

This is not an anonymous fest, feel free to share snippets of your fics as you write!

There will be a discord for the fest this round like there was last round, the link for which will be given in the sign up form. Please let me know if you have any questions!

Have you ever been scouring AO3 for the perfect fic to read, but the tag you want is too niche? Well, this is the fest for you!

Rules:

Must be 18 years or older to participate

No underage smut (less than 18)

Non-con and dead dove will be allowed, as long as it is tagged extensively and accordingly

Authors must have an AO3 account

There is a minimum word count of 1k and no maximum word count

All fics must be completed by the writer’s posting date (no WIPs)

All pairings (or even no pairings) are welcome!

Not all tags in the fic have to be niche. You can have any cliche or trope you'd like, as long as there's one neglected one.

This is a prompt challenge @fallinglikethis had the inspiration for after reading some of the feelings described in the book 1000 Feelings For Which There Are No Names.  Participants pick a random number between 1 and 1000 and have to use the feeling described to write a short fic in a week’s time!  We hope you enjoy reading them as much as we enjoyed writing them.

Hi lovely people. We loved the fics posted for Round One and are coming back for Round Two! We've also included our prompt submissions list from Round One at the bottom of this post.

Our new and updated Rules and Guidelines:

There is no minimum or maximum word count requirement.

Fics must be completed when posted to AO3. No WIPs.

This fest is not anonymous. Feel free to post snippets or teasers. (Make sure to tag @1dsoulmatefest )

As this is a One Direction fest, one of the members must be included in the main pairing.

Pairings do not need to be romantic. They can be platonic or simply sexual.

There will be no restriction on the writing of explicit, sensitive, or potentially triggering content, though this must be tagged appropriately.

All AUs are allowed such as omegaverse, Mpreg, girl direction, etc. as long as soulmates are the main focus. Any variation of soulmate AUs are allowed.

In the name of community we strongly discourage the use of AI images. We gladly help you find an artist to work with you on your moodboard or any fic related graphics.

1D Film Fest

Always wanted that one film turned into an epic 1D fan fiction or Art Piece? Well now you can! A Ziam rendition of Marley & Me or a terrifying trip to the Overlook Hotel for Larry, the screen is yours.

Gauging the interest of this fest, whilst the timeline hasn’t been fleshed out, after prompt submission and writer/artist sign ups, completed works won’t be due until the beginning of 2025. Fics and art must be obviously inspired by their source material but does not need to be a replica - it can be within the same universe or changing that tragic ending to a happy one!

2024 Prongsfoot Fest is open!

Time for the 2nd edition of the summer fests we host on this account! This year, Prongsfoot (James Potter/Sirius Black), and more specifically in Canon Divergent alternate universes.

Sign-ups are open until July 24th, and Assignments are open until July 31th. Feel free to submit prompts, for writers and artists to fill them! And if you want to participate, the fest is already open.

With the celebration of Zayn's new album, sign-ups for the second round of the Zayn’s Albums Fic Fest are now officially opened! Just like last time sign-ups will stay open for the duration of the fest.

To sign up, simply select your song (you can view the list of eligible songs here) and then fill in this form. 

For anyone who needs it, here is a quick reminder of the rules:

the fic must be inspired by one of the songs from Zayn’s albums or singles. This does not mean that Zayn needs to be part of the primary pairing (though it is encouraged), but he does need to be an important character in the fic.

one of the members of One Direction does have to be a part of the main pairing if there is one. However, gen fics are also welcome!

there is no minimum or maximum wordcount

fics must be completed by the time of posting

there is a maximum of 2 fics per song

there is no maximum to the amount of fics you can write, however you may only claim a second prompt once you’ve finished your first fic

we will not moderate for content, however we do ask you to tag your work appropriately

when posting your fic, we expect you to make a fic post on Tumblr. Use of AI is not allowed for the images in the moodboard.
