love how the narration's tone changes for Julia chapters. it contrasts really well with the Quentin chapters, with Julia being more... competent sounding, while also just being SUPER pissed off and petty. The whole tirade about oboe and julia losing first chair is absolutely phenomenal chatacter building
#howling#the magicians (lev grossman)#like. one thing i like the most about the books is that everyone fucking sucks#but in a BELIEVEABLE way#like sure julia is cool and competent but she also holds stupid petty grudges and is easily set off#and thats all made clear in the span of like two pages without stating it outright

Oh man the trigger for Julia realizing that her memory got fucked with is both way funnier and way more consistent with Julia's vibe in the books compared to the show. Instead of it being a mysterious self-inflicted injury Julia finds out something is wrong because an essay she turned in had incorrect information taken from Wikipedia and she would NEVER use Wikipedia as a source
#howling#the magicians (syfy)#the magicians (lev grossman)#kind of baffles me sometimes when I realize what things are kept vs altered between the books and the show#like idk. it feels like a lot of the changes are just objectively worse in terms of both pacing and characterization#but I guess I'll try to hold off on judging entirely until I actually finish all three books

MAN quentin in the book is somehow MORE of an asshole about his relationship w/ alice than in the show. like bro you REALLY shouldve broken up with alice ages ago and now you're blaming it all falling apart on JANET???? the person YOU cheated on your girlfriend with????
its kind of funny that he doesnt even have the emotion bottles to blame it on. he was just normal drunk on an otherwise normal day. and he doesnt even learn about filory until AFTER he cheats!!! and theyre not all in mortal danger at the time!!!!!! he's just being a piece of shit who's way too much of a coward to break up with alice
#howling#the magicians (syfy)#the magicians (lev grossman)#also VERY interesting that the show changed it to be more quentin and eliot when in the books its very clearly more quentin and janet(margo#and eliot just happens to also be There#also there's the whole thing where mike doesnt even exist in the book at least so far#so eliot's self-destructive spiral is more just. him being generally depressed instead of a direct result of trauma#honestly everyone's deal in the book is interesting because theyre all worse but also more grounded. if that makes any sense#it feels more like normal college drama rather than whatever the FUCK is going on in the show

because im literally completely unable to enjoy any media without doing this, ive been thinking about what sort of animals all the magicians are. some im more set on than the others
quentin is a domestic rabbit. julia is a hare. EXTREMELY certain about both of those. it just works extremely well
also pretty solid on alice as a fox, which like. yknow obvious choice but also because i think it works as something people tend to misunderstand. it fits her
leaning towards secretary bird for eliot, and maybe king cobra for margo?
first instinct for penny is a swift, due to the traveler thing, but i don't know if it fits very well otherwise.
kady kinda gives me coyote vibes, but i can't justify it beyond that
marina is a hyena. no elaboration needed here i think
#howling#the magicians (syfy)#i have more thoughts on others but these are the ones ive thought of the most so far#it all started because i was thinking about how fucked up it is that wild hares and domestic rabbits are like entirely different guys#despite always being lumped in together as being the same

one thing i still cant quite wrap my head around in terms of the time loop is. how the hell did the beast manage to kill jane in 40 but not any of the previous loops. like the one Big Change in 40 is julia not being in breakbills right. so how does that result in mike, some random alumni, getting possessed by the beast, seducing eliot in order to. idk get close to quentin???? and then he just happens to also kill jane as a bonus after getting caught. idk i just want to see like a full step by step butterfly effect chain of events that connects julia being a hedge witch this time to jane beefing it
#howling#the magicians (syfy)#i like to think its because. since quentin doesnt have an existing friend at breakbills he fully imprints onto eliot like a duckling#making it viable this time to get quentin by going thru eliot#and then eventually getting to jane via the most ineffecent murder scheme ever#i mean really. cursed knife with a slow acting curse??? he was giving them time to catch him ON PURPOSE#also wondering whether the beast actually was targeting quentin or just wanted it to LOOK like he was targeting quentin#either way theres a whole lot of implications that are left without much acknowledgement with the timeloop situation
