As a fan of the series "Mad Men", this article is relevant to my interests and it is nice to see that it talks pretty much exactly about a topic we discussed in class. The article was inspired by a change in the character, Dawn, on the show and the role that she plays. The author states, that by televising a private conversation between Dawn and the Don, the main character, it "subtly realigned the show's consideration of race from one that was primarily about the experiences of white people to one that was at least curious about, if not yet diving deeply into, the experiences of black people, and specifically black women". From this statement it seems as if the author is alluding to the idea that the purpose of her character in that past seemed to be to simply add to the white man's story, but now her character presents the opportunity for the viewer to actually understand her.

So upon realizing that I was waaay behind on this whole Tumblr scene, I hereby give to y'all this little N*SYNC ditty. There really isn't that much academically minded about this song. I mean, I guess you could attribute some parts of the video to the concept of 'gaze' and how there is a whole lot of objectification (of both genders, seeing as they're toys) and weird body shots and whatever. The song itself has a lot to say about identity in and out of a romantic context, and claims could be made that it relates to several of the films we watched over the course of the semester.
Also it's going to be May.

I found this article and thought it was perfect for the end of the semester because it included so many different things we learned in this class. It talked about gender differences and how society starts applying gender norms and stereotypes to even babies. It also talked about the differences for men and women in love, relationships, and marriage. At the end it talked about relationships that are out of the norm and how they are viewed by society. The whole article is based off of a short film. Although I could not see the film, I think it would be a really cool video to watch in future classes at the end of the semester.

I’m posting this just because I was feeling Disney and love the song “Kiss the Girl.” This song is so cute and innocent which is often a rare thing for many love songs. It tells the story of the prince being told to kiss the girl, but he’s too shy to do so. I think it’s cute how the guy is so shy because that’s not something you usually see in media because it’s demasculating. The song is so fun and upbeat and who couldn’t possibly love a song from the Little Mermaid?!

This is an article/advertisement that goes along with my last one as well as a "graduating into the real-world" piece. It talks about double standards between men and women in the workplace. It's originally an ad meant to sell Pantene hair care products, but it has received more attention in the news for its message about double standards. Their special lines/slogans are, "Don't let labels hold you back," and "Be Strong and Shine." It's a great, meaningful article that reminds those of us who are entering the workplace to stand up and "shine" through the double standards.

Christopher George Latore Wallace (1972 - 1997) AKA The Notorious B.I.G.
This song shows a different, more emotional side of puff daddy than most people are used to. The song is about the murder of his friend Notorious BIG. It is one of the few songs I know that really shows the emotions that can go along with platonic love, which is something we have not really covered in class. Having lost a friend close to me, it really hits home.

Today is the tenth anniversary of Mean Girls. The film, directed by Mark Waters and written by Tina Fey, opened on April 30th, 2004 and earned a surprising $24.4 million over its debut weekend. The Paramount Pictures release had garnered solid reviews and eventually went on to earn a terrific $129m [...]
Here's a tribute to the Mean Girls 10 year anniversary. This article talks about why the movie is still so important. (Mainly because it's a female-centric movie and most of the female stars became successful after)
On Wednesday we wear pink!

Since it's my last song to post, I thought I would end with a fun, dance, electronic song. This song makes me want to jump up and down and scream the lyrics (very similar to how I feel about this being my last class of the year.) This song was the longest running single of 2011, and almost the 2010's until Blurred Lines came along.

Yesterday-The Beatles
I could go on and on about my love for The Beatles and the brilliant songwriting of Lennon and McCartney, but I will leave it at that there is a reason why "Yesterday" is one of the most covered songs in the history of music. What I think is really amazing about this love song is that Paul McCartney dreamt the entire melody one night, and after putting it on the back burner for awhile he finally added the lyrics to finish it. What I think is great is that McCartney wrote most of this song by himself despite one addition from John Lennon, which was the word "yesterday."

"All Over the World" -- The Ladies of SNL, Anna Kendrick, and Icona Pop
I'm mainly posting this songs for shits and giggles, but I think the song does raise an interesting question. For rappers, its old hat and normal to have a song about all the women they've had sex with; however, why does it seem creepy and weird when women sing about having sex with all these men?
Food for thought (though mostly for laughs)

Strap on your racial sensitivity, friends, 'cause here we go again...these are the 50 most racist TV shows of all time.
I didn't post this to ruin some of your long-time favorite t.v. shows, but to get everyone thinking about how many races are underrepresented in television, even today. When we were talking about the HBO hit Girls in class, I started to think about the various shows that are still playing today that feature a predominately white cast. Two of which that made the list were Sex and The City and Friends. Both are favorites of mine, but they feature a group of people living in New York, and the fact that there are little to no African American or even Hispanic cast members does seem strange and possibly racist.

"My Heart Will Go On" by Celine Dion is one of the greatest love songs. The Titanic has always been looked at as one of the greatest love stories of all times and with this song being one of its theme songs it has really turned it into an iconic song. Celine Dion does a phenomenal job with the vocals and really draws out each note filling the song with even more love and emotion. The lyrics are so beautiful and really express the love shared between the couple. The song builds and builds and has an amazing ending. Definitely a great song that really shows their true love.

Going back to queer theory, I thought Ash Beckham's talk about "that's so gay" gives important insight into what we say and how our words can be offensive. Using "that's so gay" to describe something that you don't like is not appropriate and it is ignorant. Gay does not equate to stupid or dumb or anything of that sort. Gay is simply gay, but by using it to negatively describe something, we continue to increase the inequality gap within our society. I think Ash does a wonderful job of advocating her position without preaching or being overbearing.

Totally did this wrong the first few times. So this is a song, it's pretty great. Lots of stuff about identity and objectification and... alright, it's N*SYNC on April 30th. Someone has to do it.

This song relates to the film Bridget Jones' Diary. Money is the topic in both works, and money is what runs the world. This video shows expensive cars and big homes, which is what most people desire in life. It focuses on showing love by buying material things. T.I. (the artist in the song) just throws money and products at his girl in the video to show affection. He wants her to know that everything will be alright as long as he still has money.

How to tell the difference between love and lust.
This article caught my eye because I am young and have always been told I’ve been “too young to understand love.” A lot of times, one may feel like they’re in love because they’re so attracted to someone physically that it overpowers them. But when looks fade, what is left to keep that “love” intact. One strong sign of love that was presented in this article was: You want to spend quality time together other than just sex. This is very interesting because often times we are very selfish and judgement over looks because the media and society has “higher” standards for people based on the way they look. The media says all girls should look a certain way, but that’s not what makes us different. Your lover should be your best friend before they are your lover. You should trust and confide in someone completely before you get mixed up with love and lust.
