Ponce Suites Davao: Giving Guests A Unique Art Immersion Experience
Ponce Suites Davao: Giving Guests A Unique Art Immersion Experience
I’ve been to places in the Philippines, and I’ve seen a lot of off-beat restaurants, bars and parks or museums. But I’ve never seen a hotel that has artworks pasted or attached in every nook and cranny! It’s only the Ponce Suites Gallery Hotel – one of the best Davao hotels.
This Davao hotel is run by the parents of one of the city’s most famous artists – Kublai Millan. And perhaps this explains…

Ponce Suites Gallery Hotel: An Edifice of Art & Affordable Accommodation
If you’re planning to visit Davao, and you’re looking for an affordable, yet unique place to stay, then why not check out Ponce Suites? Wait, Ponce… what? Where’s that?
Well, I do understand if you’re surprised, because you were probably expecting that I’d recommend you to some of the more popular Mindanao hotels here. The truth is, this homey inn is actually one of the “must-see” places in the city. Where else you can see a hotel that blends art with affordable living and convenience? It’s only at the Ponce Suites Gallery Hotel!
Here’s a look at the hotel and why it’s truly a nice place to visit, and stay.
An Art Gallery/Lodging House Rolled Into One
Once you step out of the car or taxi, a sculpture of large, tribal-inspired ‘durian’ fruit greets you at the entrance. If you think that’s it, wait ’till you get inside. From the moment you step in at the lobby, until you walk to your room, you can witness the walls being littered with a bazillion of unique sculptures, paintings and murals! First-time visitors would surely be overwhelmed with a healthy (yet unexpected) overdose of arts and culture in the hotel.
It Has More Art Work Than The Local Museum
Every nook and cranny of this four-storey hotel is filled with paintings, murals, portrait sketches, paper mache, wooden sculptures, and whatever (and the toilets are not even spared). The stunning artwork you’ll see inside is the product of the creative talents of Kublai Millan – a renowned Mindanao artist. At the end of a tiring tour of the city, the inn can be a very cool place to relax and unwind, as well as soothe both body and soul.
Instead of heading to the local museum, why not visit (and of course stay) at Ponce Suites?
It’s actually one of the top hotels in Davao city! And if you think it doesn’t have any amenities apart from all that art work, think again. It has 30 well-appointed, reasonably-priced and air-conditioned rooms, 2 function rooms, 3 cafes and bars. So, if you’re looking for a unique and out-of-the-box hotel experience, then the Ponce Suites in Davao City should be number one on your list!

I have just come from the latest book launch by author Karl M. Gasper, CSsR which was attended by upwards of 100 people and to quote brother Karl ‘…… mostly my friends, family and people I have been involved with’. His book, Desperately Seeking God’s Saving Action: Yolanda Survivors’ Hope Beyond Heartbreaking Lamentations, is based on his personal experiences and observations while in Tacloban after the devastating Yolanda storm struck. The venue for the launch was the Fr. Abdon Josol CSsR Hall, St. Alphonsus Theological And Mission Institute (SATMI), Bajada in Davao City.
Fr. Edgar Cayanan O’Carm of the Institute of Spirituality of Asia gave the welcoming address, followed by the reading of one of two reviews of the book.  During the intermission which followed, a nationally well known song, An Iroy Nga Tuna (English translation ‘The Motherland’) and often referred to as ‘the second Philippine national anthem’ was sung with emotion by Bro. Ferderiz Cantiller CSsR.
Dean of SATMI, Bro. Karl Gasper also teaches there and this book is his fourth publication.  Here are extracts from some of the book reviews:
“This book is very useful in helping others to respond quickly, effectively, compassionately and prophetically to future disasters.  More than this, it offers a perspective on pastoral ministry and missiological activity which might help us to proclaim the Gospel anew today in many different circumstances and situations.  This is the story of the disaster of Typhoon Yolanda and the response of a dynamic group of missionaries: priests, sisters, brothers and lay men and women.  It is their story but it is our story too……”
-Fr. Michael Brehl, CSsR
“Karl Gasper allows us to listen to the voices of those who suffered through, and survived, the catastrophic typhoon Yolanda that swept over Tacloban, and other areas, in 2013 bringing destruction and death in its wake.  We listen to them as they struggle to find the language to name the disaster; as they alternate between blaming God and clinging to God in faith and hope. ………..”
- Helen R. Graham, MM
“Karl Gasper, In this book, invites us to see the victims of the super typhoon Yolanda with prophetic eyes of compassion, lamentation, and hope.  As one remembers the painful memories of the Yolanda victims, one cannot but be deeply affected by the unimaginable evils of ecological tragedy.  This book deeply reflects the author’s option to share with the lamentations of the grieving victims who continually search for meaning in the midst of suffering and death.  Above all, this book contains a lot of stories of hope grounded in our faith in God as Redeemer. ………”
- Fr. Reynaldo Raluto

Fortunately for Mindanao and the Philippines, this event was preparatory to the year 2020 when world trade organization member countries will also then experience borderless trade and investment.  As the world seems to get smaller, we have to get bigger – singly, sub-regionally and regionally to muster our strengths and flourish!
The last day of this event saw a large crowd attend. There were speeches, presentations to representatives of the participating countries, entertainment.  According to news reports there was significant foreign interest in investing in Mindanao so let’s hope it all comes to a reality.
Some final day pictures posted below:

FOR WHOM IT ALL HAPPENED!
The kids below (along with all the others) are, in the long run, the beneficiaries of events such as the recent BIMP-EAGA trade fair.  Consider this – 15-20 years hence, these kids will be ‘taking over’ – with (hopefully) a more solid base.  All for making a brighter, happier and more prosperous today and tomorrow!

Well, after many days of problems loading pictures into our posts – success!!  Below are some pictures of the fashion show held at the BIMP-EAGA Trade Fair, Saturday 25th October.   Designs are by Indonesian fashion designer and critic, Sonny Muchlison.   He has brought the concept of contemporary batik patterns which, to him, have two functions – to preserve and to deconstruct.   (click on an image to enlarge)

Today is the last day, more and more are still pouring in, looking around for more opportunities offered by this sub-region of five countries which is gearing up for the 10-country ASEAN which will be in effect next year.

Cultural dances were performed frequently by Filipino dancers onstage catching the attention of the business audience making it a truly “Business with Leisure” experience.  I will be posting more details and also lost of pictures in the days to com.
Last night , an instant party happened at Ponce Suites Gallery Hotel and Art Musem at the Kublai Kafe. Pictures in a later postwill tell you the story of how much more fun it is at Ponce Suites and when the party is “instant”.  Please like us/follow us on facebook.
