It was dark, and quiet, as we stood there waiting for the bus. Now and then she would look up from her hands, wondering when the bus would come. Not eager to engage in conversation, I left a distance between us. Looking at her from behind, I suddenly saw her for what she was. A small, weak existence, desperate to be something. So used to her being loud, I realize that was her way of clinging to meaning, as if that would make her important. Now that she’s finally quiet for a change, she’s not scary at all. I’ve always seen her as this villain in my life’s story, but now I realize that she has been her own villain as well. And I can only pity her.
