'zumthor’s pine scaffolding supports a suspended silk cocoon. within the cocoon, visitors walk along a 400-foot long oak-floored corridor. a hanging light bulb floats behind each of the 91 windows, illuminating them in memory of the 91 individuals who were convicted of sorcery and burnt at the stake. each window is accompanied by a plaque that reveals the story of each individual.'

/ 2012
| source: ricegallery.org |
‘in his installation, reverse of volume rg, yasuaki onishi uses the simplest materials — plastic sheeting and black hot glue — to create a monumental, mountainous form that appears to float in space. the process that he calls 'casting the invisible’ involves draping the plastic sheeting over stacked cardboard boxes, which are then removed to leave only their impressions. this process of 'reversing’ sculpture is onishi’s meditation on the nature of the negative space, or void, left behind’

‘the project is a simple and spartan box, demonstrating a refined use of standard industrial building elements, such as prefabricated concrete walls, aluminium cladding and cupboard-like office spaces. a continuous north-oriented glasshouse facade brings light until deep into the ateliers, mirroring the open backside of the building. the four spaces are flanked by a communal meeting room, whose triangular form distorts the simple geometry of the building, and plays a perspective game with visitors arriving on its parking lot. the overhanging roof creates a set of protected parking lots in the back for the renters, thus freeing the public front facade of the obligatory cars, and maximising space for manoeuvres at the front gates. the distorted perimeter of the building is en exercise in box-ness, making an argument for a self-conscious utilitarian architecture’

‘the access road to the bathhouse is embodied in a concrete structure that builds landscape and organizes the territoty. materialize a path or simply build a large walk six meter above the ground level leading from the city to the river, accross the emptiness of ticino valley urban void. relate the public space of the swimming pools with the plain, castelgrande hill, the city, the mountains, the sky. every functional aspect has been solved by its subordination to a territoral approach, in order to connect the city with the river through a footbridge, an open structure that gives an undetermined character to this urban sprawl.’

‘named after the river that runs past the institution, the theater has been designed as an ‘urban lantern’ that, at night, glows from within. this effect is achieved as a result of the building’s cladding — a ptfe skin that also allows daylight to enter the interior spaces. during the day, the building appears as a solid object, while by night, it’s translucent appearance hints at the activity and events taking place inside.’

‘the project is a cubic volume connected to the ground through four corner pillars, hosting technical spaces and secondary stairs, and with the entrance stair located in the center, thus leaving the ground floor completely open. the main volume is enveloped by a three-dimensional metal grid generating a sort of double façade. technical systems are exposed in the space between the interior volume and the one defined by the grid. the façade of the interior volume is composed by identical squared elements which can be uplift revealing a continuously variable series of openings. two sets of stairs and enclosed bridges connect the extension to the original gallery’

‘the building is a one-storey building and is characterized by a wide roof-garden covering. from above, it seems the natural extension of the park. a pattern of different-sized squares invests the building and the territory, progressively transforming the typological scheme from a linear scheme – towards the streets where the buildings and public services are – to a scheme made of pavilions towards the park; a sequence of independent cells where teaching areas are.’

| source: wikiarquitectura; peter zumthor | ‘… the building is made of steel, glass and a molded mass of stone cast concrete that gives the interior of the building with texture and spatial composition. from the outside, the building looks like a lamp. it absorbs the changing light of the sky or the foggy lake, it reflects light and color and gives an indication of its inner life according to the viewing angle, the light of day and time…'
