Andy Hume - Web Fonts as a progressive enhancement @ Ampersand Conference
"Progressive enhancement attempts to ensure that content is delivered to all web users regardless of technology. How do web fonts fit into this methodology? What and where are the possible pitfalls, and how might we work around them? Andy will look at some learnings from implementing web fonts on high performance and high availability sites including the Guardian."

Gerry Leonidas - The Newest New Typography @ Ampersand Conference
"It takes four seconds to make up your mind about a typeface, and about eight minutes to explain why, in detail. It takes about ten years, give or take a couple, to figure out why all the print typographers moan that there's more to Good Typography than a nice typeface; they'd say it would take as much to explain the whole thing. Gerry will attempt to do it in 44 minutes, leaving just enough time for a joke about old typographers."

Jamie Neely - Prototyping Web Typography @ After the Jump (Type Directors Club)
Using Photoshop to design websites certainly has it short falls. There has to be a better way. Thanks to smart people like Jamie Neely, founder of Typecast, there are new tools available that make designing the web more like the web. Neely proposes an entirely different approach to digital design that places typography and content as the center of a brand's digital expression and allows for real-time prototyping so that what a client sees at the design stage is what the client can expect in the end result.
Jamie Neely is the Creative Director at Typecast, a web design prototyping tool recently acquired by Monotype. typecast.com

Frank Chimero - The Shape of Design @ Build Conference
To really think about design, you need to learn and think about everything other than it. Design is a vessel: the most important part is what it holds. As makers of things, the work gets better from outside influences, and gives us clarity about the purpose of the work: to inform, to persuade, and to delight. We'll spend some time ruminating on what it means to delight our audiences, think of different ways to do so through mechanisms like storytelling, and realize that the real benefit of making anything is to nourish lives.
Frank Chimero is a graphic designer, illustrator, teacher, maker and writer hailing from Portland, Oregon. He also teaches graphic design & typography to eager minds at Portland State University and is managing partner of graphic design blog, Thinking for a Living.

Josh Brewer - Photoshop you are a liar
Marshall McLuhan once said, "We shape our tools and afterwards our tools shape us." The tools we use to design digital experiences have a profound affect on our approach and our process. Photoshop (and tools like it) were originally used to make photos look better, more vibrant, and evoke an emotional response. Years later our tools have shaped us into midnight-oil burning pixel-tweakers, striving to produce a beautiful, static rendering that will ultimately be anything but static. Painfully, the most stunning comp is nothing more than a theory until you push real data through it.
Markup, presentation, and behavior are the foundational layers of digital design. Our tools have allowed us to play safely in the "presentation" layer for far too long. Designers need to learn code. Some need to learn the fundamentals of programming. And others still, would be wise to push the boundaries of what it means to express their designs in code.
This talk will dig into the sobering truths that come from working on products that millions of people use everyday and leave you embracing the fluidity of the medium we know and love.

Stephanie Troeth - Cheat your way with UX - Beyond Tellerand
So you're building a knockout web site, a cool mobile app, or kickstarting an startup idea. But how can you gain a better understanding of your users – your customers – to begin deciphering their needs? How can you figure out who would be interested, or if there's going to be a market? Who is really your target audience?
In this talk you explore some user experience design (UX) tools and activities that can help us refine objectives, pave the way for making decisions, determine the shape of a minimum viable product and enhance how we translate brand values to voice and design.

Josh Brewer - Design is About Relationships
It’s easy to get so caught up in theory and process that we forget that design is about relationships. It’s not about Photoshop comps or bytes of code. It’s about people. And content. And, especially today, their devices. It’s about the interplay between content and form, between real-time data and how, when and why we share and consume it. It’s about enabling connections where they couldn’t have existed before. It’s about focusing on creating experiences that are more meaningful, more delightful, and ultimately, more human.
