Yakusoku no Neverland (Promised Neverland) – by Kaiu Shirai and Posuka Demizu
Tumblr media
Chapters: 181 (complete)
Anime: 12 Episodes from CloverWorks (Season 2 coming Winter 2021) Can be watched on Crunchyroll, Netflix
Genre: Action, Shonen, Mystery, Psychological
Synopsis:  “The Promised Neverland follows three protagonists, Emma, Norman, and Ray, along with a cast of orphans who live together. Their lives have been full of joy, that is until the protagonists learn the orphanage is really a farm where children are raised and given to demons to be eaten.”
Thoughts: While 12 year olds playing 4d chess may take you out of the emersion at first, don’t let that stop you from enjoying this intense and at times thought provoking series. Full of interesting settings, a cast you’re emotionally invested in, and a truly interesting mystery, Promised Neverland was a great read. And it’s complete! Meaning you don’t have to wait months to see what happens next.

BEASTARS – by Paru Itagaki
Tumblr media
Chapters: 196 (complete)
Anime: 12 episodes by Orange (Season 2 coming Winter 2021) Can be watched with Netflix
Genre: Drama, Shonen, Psychological, Romance
Synopsis: “ The story takes place in a world of modern, civilized, anthropomorphic animals with a cultural divide between the carnivores and herbivores. Out of nowhere, Tem the alpaca is brutally murdered and devoured in the night setting a wave of unease and distrust between the herbivore and carnivore students. ”
Thoughts: This is a must read for anyone who enjoys long, dramatic, and undeniably well thought out stories. While the loose art style and animal characters may turn people away at first, there is more to meets the eye then the surface when it comes to Beastars. Starting as a school romance drama turned murder mystery turned crime thriller, this manga is a fully realized story that keeps you interested in the main characters and their lives no matter where it goes. The last chapter recently dropped and I can honestly say I’m really going to miss reading it.

Mairimashita! Iruma-kun (Welcome to Demon School! Iruma kun) – by Osamu Nishi
Tumblr media
Chapters: 166 (ongoing)
Anime: 24 episodes by Bandai Namco Pictures (Season 2 coming Spring 2021) Can be watched with Crunchyroll, Netflix
Genre: Shonen, Comedy, School-life, Supernatural
Synopsis: “ Fourteen-year-old Iruma Suzuki has been unfortunate all his life, having to work to earn money for his irresponsible parents despite being underage. One day, he finds out that his parents sold him to the demon Sullivan. However, Iruma's worries about what will become of him are soon relieved, for Sullivan merely wants a grandchild, pampering him and making him attend the demon school Babyls.”
Thoughts: I figured since it’s a day until Halloween, I should post a thematic manga, but at the end of the day there are so many different good ones that include things like demons or ghosts or other supernatural things. So I figured I’d recommend debatably the most wholesome demon focused manga. This manga, while a shonen with plenty of action, stands out due to its characters. They’re interesting, true to their beliefs, and actively explore their bonds with each other. The main character especially is charming and adds a whole new take to your typical wimpy shonen protagonist. Still ongoing and with season two of it’s anime on the way, if you’re in the mood for a happier shonen, this manga is a must read.

Yuukoku no Moriarty (Moriarty the Patriot) – by Ryousuke Takeuchi and Hikaru Miyoshi
Tumblr media
Chapters: 25 (in English) (ongoing)
Anime: 24 episodes by Production I.G (ongoing) Can be watched with Funimation
Genre: Seinen, Mystery
Synopsis: “ In the late 19th century, the British Empire has become a global power. Due to the strict class stratification, the average citizen has little chance of successfully rising up to the top, where the despicable nobility rules over them all. William James Moriarty, the second son of the Moriarty household, is a young mathematics professor who has displayed great cunning and intellect since he was a child. Along with his brothers Albert and Louis, he lives the simple life of a noble. Outside of school, William is a well-known private consultant willing to solve the problems of anyone in need. However, his gentle demeanor belies his position as the head of a group prepared to wreak havoc in pursuit of its desire—a new world built from the ashes of the old. ”
Thoughts: The best way to show off this story’s appeal is to compare it to stories like Black Butler. Similar in style, this manga’s centered around good looking dudes from England during the Victorian era getting involved in different types of crime- often to combat the crime committed by ‘evil nobles’. While not the most true to the original Sherlock Holmes story (as it incorporates several other stories as it goes on such as James Bond and jack the ripper) it is a fantastic take on the character’s personalities and ties to each other. Not to mention the cuts between Sherlock’s perspective and Moriarty’s are very neat.

Jujutsu Kaisen (Sorcery Fight) – by Gege Akutami
Tumblr media
Chapters: 126 (ongoing)
Anime: 24 episodes from MAPPA (currently running) Can be watched on Crunchyroll
Genre: Action, Shonen, Supernatural
Synopsis: “ The story of Jujutsu Kaisen is set in a world where Cursed Spirits feed on unsuspecting humans and fragments of the legendary and feared demon Ryomen Sukuna have been lost and scattered about. Should any curse consume Sukuna's body parts, the power they gain could destroy the world as we know it.”
Thoughts: Jujutsu Kaisen is ongoing right now, and even has an anime that you can watch instead (and should watch if I’m honest. It’s only a few episodes in, but so far it looks great!) but even so I would 100% say it’s worth the read. Gege Akutami’s art style is dynamic and fascinating (if a little gross at times, perfect for the genre of the manga). The action’s always interesting to watch, and it’s easy to understand what’s going on, even when the fights contain more outlandish elements. More so then that, the characters are interesting, dynamic, and never reduced to just stereotypes, making me excited to see even minor characters make reappearances. On top of all that, the story feels very active. It moves in interesting ways and ends up with each arc feeling different and fresh.
Overall, it’s been a great read so far, and I’m excited each week to see what’ll happen next (right now the manga’s in the middle of a big arc, and I’m big time nervous to see what’ll happen next!)
