a/n: i was listening to my wlw playlist and honey by kehlani came on, and i thought it’d fit with the sweet personality i wanted the reader to have in this (mai seemed to like how sweet takada-chan was, but would probably also like a strong girl). thank you for my first request, i hope you enjoy!

it had been yet another day of hard training for the upcoming goodwill event and you were just going to get yourself a cold drink before going back to your dorm for a shower and some rest. before you can make your selection, you pick up on the presence of a sorcerer. you turn to acknowledge them, and they loudly greet you.

“are you a student here?” he asks.

“yes, i am, my name is y/n, i’m a second year! are you a student from the kyoto school?” you reply, flashing a charming smile.

he smiles back, responding, “another competitor! my name is todo aoi, kyoto third-year.”

“your name sounds familiar...oh! you’re that guy who took out all those demons last year!” you begin to feel excitement at the chance to take down such a powerful opponent rise.

he seems proud to be recognized, but not in a way that suggests he’s surprised. can’t wait to smash his teeth in, you think to yourself.

“to assess your potential, i have one question for you. y/n, what is your type of woman? by the way, my type is a tall woman with a big ass.”

you stare at him, he stares back. this lasts for a few seconds before you break the silence with, “excuse me, but what the hell?”

“if you’re not into women, that’s fine too. I just assumed-”

“you were right, but...why?”

“a person’s taste reveals everything about them. people with boring tastes are boring, and i don’t like boring people.”

“that’s fair, i guess. if i had to summarize it on the spot, i’d say my type is a woman who’s stubborn and freely speaks her mind.”

todo considers for a second, and then breaks out in a grin. 

“excellent!”

his celebration is interrupted by the arrival of a young woman who looks irritated.

“let’s go, maki isn’t here,” she huffs, crossing her arms.

“if you’re looking for maki, she’ll probably be back later. she went out shopping with nobara,” you inform her.

“i’m not waiting that long, let’s just leave,” the young woman says more to todo than to you.

“wait, mai, i have to introduce you to my new friend y/n. she’s a second-year who will be participating in the goodwill event,” todo directs mai’s attention to you. “y/n, this is mai, she’s also a second-year.”

there’s a subtext to his tone that you can’t quite pick up on, but you’re distracted by mai’s eyes piercing into yours. she looks over you, trying as hard as she can to prevent the heat rising up her neck from reaching her cheeks and ears. your voice swirls around her ears, sweet and captivating as you talk to todo a bit more. she catches the excited glint in your eyes, one that she recognizes in her own, and begins to understand that you’re a tough opponent despite your sweet exterior. she’s so lost in your gestures and smile and voice and everything that she misses whatever question you asked that prompted todo to reply,

“i regretfully have to decline, mai and i have important plans for the day.”

“oh, that’s a shame. here’s my number, if you’re in tokyo again, why don’t you message me and we can hang out then,” you hand todo a slip of paper, causing mai to be caught somewhere between panic and jealousy.

“excellent! mai, let’s go so that we’re on time to meet takada-chan!”

“what?! you didn’t mention dragging me with you, todo,” mai snaps.

“it’s my duty as a future husband to introduce you to my future wife-”

“who the hell do you think you are?! i’m not going to creep on some idol with you, todo! i have better things to do with my time.”

you watch the two bicker for a little longer before interrupting.

“so, mai, i take it that you don’t actually have plans for later then?”

“well, uh, i guess not…” her sudden change in demeanor surprises both you and todo.

“then why don’t i take you out for sushi and sightseeing?”

“t-that sounds like it might be okay,” she tries to cover how flustered she is to no avail.

you suppress a laugh as you move closer to her, taking her hands, and say, “then it’s a date. i’ll meet you back here at five.”

before she can reboot her brain (congrats, you fried it with gay panic) you grab your drink from the vending machine and leave, waving goodbye to them both.

“so that’s your type of woman! what a coincidence that she would meet her type on the same day you met yours...i should start a matchmaking service!”

you’re practically floating back to the dorms when you hear a loud thud from where you just left, prompting you to turn around and see mai yelling at todo, face red and hands on hips. you giggle lightly, more excited to get to know her than before.
