So what was she like? The more I think about it, the less I remember, the less I know. I can only say that she was beautiful, and lonely, and generous, and that she loved to laugh… sometimes. I can say that Ava Gardner was one of those people who sometimes turn our lives into a landscape filled with poetic charm, but it feels like life is a bitter desert for them. These people are marked by artlessness or decadence, it is unknown where they are heading, and they themselves do not know it, they are so captivated by their own nature. And for people like Ava Gardner, beauty is their nature. Ultimately, the life path of such people is not so important, you don't think about it. When you meet them, their charm and their light amaze you. And how many questions remain unanswered after their risky and unique actions.
-En essay by the French writer Françoise Sagan, Feb. 1990 (pt 4 of 4)

"I remember a conversation I had with Marlene Dietrich some time ago. “I envy Garbo,” she said. “Mystery is a woman’s greatest charm. I wish I could be mysterious like her. I don’t want people to know everything about me! Garbo never gives any interviews. I wish I could do the same.”
-Movie Classic magazine, Feb. 1937, an article by the writer Leon Surmelian
