a response to a post.
If you haven’t seen the original post, feel free to ignore this. This post is a response to another post being “critical” of SBI. I felt I needed to talk about it.
(Disclaimer: this is not to say you can’t be critical of them, I’m completely in support of always being critical of content creators, I just disagree with the reasons OP provided in regards to the Sleepy Bois.)
With Tommy, OP stated that he’s “arguably too young” to be a Twitch streamer and that if he “can’t have a job” he probably shouldn’t be “engaging in NSFW things” including jokes. I would like to point out that Tommy is 16 years old. He is long since legally able to get a job as you are able to begin working at 13 (and he does, in fact, have a job seeing as he is a Twitch streamer and YouTuber who makes money), and the age of (sexual) consent in the UK is 16. While his particular career choice can have negative impacts on his mental health, it’s clear that his friends who are also streamers and YouTubers are there to support him and guide him away from letting his job take him over, as it is something they as a group have repeatedly discussed on streams. Tommy’s choice to make NSFW jokes on his streams are, of course, something he is entirely entitled to do as the content is his. To imply that he’s not mature enough to be able to when he is literally legally able to have sex is somewhat patronising, and possibly even able to be considered to be babying him, which is something that Tommy dislikes. Furthermore, criticising Tommy for being friends with adults as it supposedly holds them back in their content is strange at best and loaded with negative implications at worst. The friendship between Phil and Tommy, the one OP had specifically pointed out, is likely something like a mentor/mentee relationship between an older, more experienced person in the same field of work as the younger, in which they both support one another. It’s unconventional, sure, but nothing to criticise. Drawing attention to it and calling it “weird” invites nothing but trouble, and I don’t think anybody wants any unfounded accusations to take place.
With Techno, OP argued that he is “glorifying his ADHD.” This is blunt response, but he is not. Techno is a person who has ADHD, and is living with and presumably coping with it. He has never once endorsed the actions he took in the Potato War, and acting as though people are going to want to hyperfixate on things because he has “[made] it seem as if hyperfixation is the best way to win something” has shown that OP has missed the point of the Potato War series. Techno puts a (jokingly written, but it still works as intended) disclaimer on the beginning of the finale video. He states multiple times that things got out of hand during the war. The last lines of the video are even that “rank number one isn’t an achievement, it’s a prison, which forces you to dedicate your life to defending a temporary title”. All of this goes to show that his actions are not something people should try to mimic. Techno being open about having ADHD, making jokes about it, and being able to make a specific brand of content partially because of it, is not the same as glorifying it. Besides, even if people came away from the Potato War with the notion that hyperfixating on things to an unhealthy extent is the best way to be successful even after Techno’s many disclaimers and clear showcasing of how none of his behaviour during the war was sane or something to be replicated, it would not matter. You cannot choose to have ADHD, and you cannot choose to hyperfixate on things.
(content warning for next paragraph: self-starvation mention)
(Also, touching upon OP’s other examples for Techno’s hyperfixations, the Bedwars streak was something that he started for fun. Techno has said that he enjoyed playing Bedwars in his free time, and that in the beginning he was not even paying attention to his winstreak. At the end of both winstreaks, Techno threw them away on purpose, implying that it was not worth it and people should not be copying him, as well as stating that the winstreak was a stressful burden. He also had friends as well as Hypixel admins looking out for him at the time, friends in particular, as they were needed to continue the winstreak and would have stopped Techno if it was going too far. As for the 100k duel, there was no sign at all, at least to me, that Techno was endorsing self-starvation as a method of winning. In fact, it seemed fairly clear that it was due to stress and a negative side effect of having to compete to win a hundred thousand dollars.)
With Wilbur, OP’s argument is that he is queerbaiting his audience and gets away with it because he is “bi coded” and “we ignore it because he just seems like he’s LGBTQ”. This is going to sound harsh, but you absolutely cannot say that a real person is “bi coded”. Wilbur is not a fictional character. There is no coding or subtext that goes into the way he presents himself as a human being, as this is reality. To say that he is “bi coded” because he “presents as bi” is an incredibly dangerous thing. You cannot present as a sexuality. People of any presentation can be of any sexuality, and to say that certain presentations denote certain sexualities is to stereotype, which is harmful to the LGBT community, as well as being something that can put peoples’ lives in danger. OP also argued that Wilbur “doesn’t say anything” about his fans that are racist. Perhaps I misread, but it seemed to me that OP’s implication is that despite Wilbur being open about his political beliefs, he is reluctant to call people out when they happen to be his fans. If I’m wrong, I sincerely apologise, but if I’m correct in reading between the lines of what OP said, this criticism of Wilbur is simply false. Out of the Sleepy Bois, Wilbur has always been the first to call out fans and stans for behaviour he does not approve of. Other than that, all I can say is that Wilbur is not racist and that he clearly does not endorse racism, and I’m not entirely sure what more OP wants to see from him. A video addressing hateful comments would only bring more hateful comments.
With Phil… OP hadn’t criticised him at all here, just criticised his fanbase.
That’s all I’m here to say. Have a nice day, OP. (check tags starting from after ‘#long post’ for a couple extra points)
