“‘Lo,” said Ronan gruffly when he finally answered.

“Did I wake you up? I’m sorry.”

“You did, and you’re not.” There was a shifting noise on the other side of the phone as Ronan presumably sat up in bed. “What’s up?”

“Nothing much, I’m just about to head to the library.”

“The library?” Ronan scoffed. “It’s New Year’s Eve, Parrish, live a little.”

“It’s also nine in the morning.”

“Exactly. You should still be in vacation mode. Sleeping. Here. With me.”

would adam's half deafness affect him??

So, a breakdown of Adam’s SSD* and how it affects him:

- SSD (single-sided deafness, also called profound unilateral hearing loss) is one of those…misunderstood sorta things. It gets a little more complex than it first comes across as.

- Now, we’ve got two ears for a lot of reasons. Mostly, they’re two units that combine their information for a singular output. Essentially, you need two ears to be able to process sound correctly. It’s not so much that things are quieter for Adam, then, but more that it’s harder for him to understand the sounds he does hear. 

- It gets harder to pinpoint where a sound is coming from. With SSD, it becomes hard to find the origin of a sound. If your phone is ringing, or if someone calls your name, or if you hear a loud crash, it’s not always easy to tell what direction that noise is coming from. 

- Speech sounds different, and it’s hard to hear sounds like ‘s’, ‘h’, and ‘f’. With one ear, the frequencies you hear change. High-frequency noises, like s’s and f’s are a lot harder to hear. Speech takes on a muffled effect, and though you can hear what people say, you can’t always understand it. Typically you can’t hear noises like birds chirping, and it’s hard to understand high-pitched voices, like those of women and children.

Prolly easier to hear Ronan than Blue, for example, because Ronan is louder and has a deeper voice. 

- It gets harder to hear how loud a sound is. With half as many vibrations to work with, volume becomes a little untrustworthy, and it gets hard to tell how loud a sound actually is. 

- Multi-tasking gets harder. SSD increases the cognitive load on your brain, putting more constant stress on it and giving it more work. Not only is the person working harder to work with sound, but the brain is working harder to process the information it’s receiving. This makes it harder to do more than one task at a time. 

For example, driving to the Barns and listening to his notes at the same time was probably the contributor of at least a couple of those falls. 

- Being in noisy environments is a lot. With just one ear to work with, it’s already hard to focus on just one person’s voice. Not only that, but most people with SSD lose their selective hearing. So, in a room full of voices, it becomes hard to hear one thing at a time–especially when you can’t tell where any of the sound is coming from.

- It’s pretty hard to concentrate on a sound in front of you, too. If you’re having a conversation with someone right in front of you, that’s actually a challenge. 

- Hearing aids wouldn’t be a solution for this, because they just amplify sound. 

*Everyone’s SSD is different, so each person does not experience all these symptoms or these symptoms in these same ways! SSD is a unique experience, and as such, the symptoms are also unique.

“It’s okay. Gansey’s not watching.”

Ronan broke off a piece of the candy in his hand and held it out to a deer. Blue’s frown deepened. You definitely weren’t supposed to feed them Snickers bars.

“I don’t mean it’s against the rules,” said Blue. “I mean it’s not good for them. I know there’s a way to explain the difference in Latin which means YOU definitely know.

The doe munched the candy and regarded Ronan with lavender eyes.

“Blue,” Ronan said gently. “You know these aren’t…they’re not really…”

“I know you dreamed them but…respect your dreams. They’re as real as you need them to be.”

man but honestly few things fuck me up as much as when adam says in trb “i think you’ll find i do pretty much everything quiet”, because on one hand, as a massive introvert, i super relate– but on the other hand, when you think about the heartbreaking implications of that sentence, it’s like, fuck. fuck, of course you do

you laugh quietly because your dad is always angry, you cry quietly because the neighbors don’t care about your bruises; you’re quiet about your achievements because the kids from the trailer park don’t really care about your straight As, and you’re quiet in school because you’re ashamed of your accent; you think quietly because it makes it easier to pull apart your emotions and sort them into logical containers, and you love quietly because you don’t quite know how yet, and because in the dusty back roads of henrietta, virginia, a boy who loves girls and boys is not quite safe.

Like, an interesting and profound and important thing can happen between two characters without it being a sex thing. Frankly, Ronan can’t be bothered with relationships that aren’t important. That doesn’t mean he’s having sex with everybody.

oh god. oh god. can we please all agree that we're not going to make "people who draw/write about ronan and hennessy's relationship all secretly want them to have sex and ship them romantically" and/or "ronan and hennessy's canon relationship is bad because it causes gay erasure in fandom" a popular opinion because of a single clown on goodreads. not to be 😱 but as someone who was harassed by multiple people for "wanting ronan and blue to have sex" because i wrote content focusing on their friendship, which i repeatedly stated was platonic and nonsexual...... i'm 😱😱😱😱😱

there are a lot of reasons people care about ronan and hennessy's relationship. almost none of them are because they're a really terrible heterosexual. please can we agree this isn't going to be A Talking Point i'm begging
