ok so I don’t like dad mav because I think the tasty thing about his & rooster’s relationship is that he’s fundamentally unable to fill the hole goose left behind, and his non-fatherness is a way to metaphorise that. like I think mav deeply believes he was the ‘worse’ out of the two of them to survive, that he’s such a colossal fuck up that he got goose killed and now is the inadequate leftover. I think that’s part of why he can’t let go, he’s haunted not just by goose’s death but by his own life. maverick is alone in the world because he is alive, and he cannot escape his own life, so he cannot escape goose.

so there’s no way for him to replace goose, he can’t even approximate that fatherhood, he’s just the one that survived and has to give rooster any scraps of himself that he can. and I think rooster felt that deeply all through his childhood, that maverick can only treat him as an obligation he has to atone for and not a person to be known and loved for who he is. neither of them can meet one another on their own terms because the spectre of goose haunts rooster’s life so much that all he feels is his mother’s grief and maverick’s guilt. so I think when you overlay a fun and fluffy ‘adoptive/found father’ interpretation onto their relationship you negate a lot of those complications. and like obviously this isn’t me saying fatherhood is a settled or healthy or uncomplicated relationship, but that the fandom uptake of fatherhood re: mav is very normatively positive and good. it’s meant exclusively in a fuzzy and complimentary sense - essentially, it’s meant as a shorthand for a deeper and more legitimate type of love that maverick expresses towards rooster. but I want those two bitches full of RESENT and RAGE and BITTERNESS and REGRET and ANGUISH. and still love each other anyway and not have that be a contradiction. so no dad mav for me
