HORSEMEN. a crime rp. the end is coming.
And you will hear of wars and rumours of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. - Matthew 24:6-7
For years, the crime families of War, Famine, and Pestilence have ruled London’s criminal underworld side-by-side and unopposed thanks to a successful truce. This peace has made it clear that the harbingers of the apocalypse cannot bring about justice to mankind without all four horsemen. Death has been waiting in the wings, mysterious and unsuspecting, arriving last, as is typical, as is expected. It’ll take little more than a single move to set off the domino chain of events that will finally bring about the end of times.

PLOT DROP.
As the days drift by and tensions mount, puppet strings continue to be pulled. Tom Riddle sits and watches his marionettes dance to the music of his own orchestra, leading Operation Auror on a merry chase. Evidence is gathered by the police -- false clues all pointing at the same incorrect person. The rifts between factions grow ever deeper, ever wider. Dissent makes for a cruel man’s playground.
[ Tuesday 25th June ]
11:00am - 4:00pm: The Funeral & Wake of Mr Regulus Arcturus Black
All members of the Sacred 28 and House of Black staff are invited to attend the wake for our beloved Regulus Arcturus Black following a private family funeral on the Black family estate. A loving son, nephew and cousin, join us in celebrating his life. Flowers may be sent ahead of time, or if you would like to make a donation in lieu in memory of Regulus, a collection will be made in aid of a future charity to be set up in his name. Dress code of formal attire, black only.
Non-Sacred 28 members will not be permitted past the Black Manor gates, with the exception of wake staff and Miss Rita Skeeter ( attending on behalf of The Daily Prophet at Mr Malfoy’s request ).
Many are surprised by the choice of a private funeral for Regulus, with rumours as to why only family were allowed to attend drifting through the warm, muggy summer air. The wake, however, is as expected -- elegant and tasteful, tables dotting the pristinely manicured garden lawn, accompanied by a suitably mellow string quartet.
2:00pm: The Arrest
The set-up starts a little something like this: one man, significantly younger than he is now, hungrily lapping up the words of his professor in the quiet of a lecture theatre. All people have the ability to change the world they live in, the professor had told him. It was the sort of idea that stuck. Only, the two of them had different plans for how society should be shaped, and thus the schism was formed.
Tom Riddle has friends in high places. He also has friends in low places. The fake evidence Emma planted on the body of newly-deceased Regulus Black had been plucked from Dumbledore no more than twenty-four hours prior and with well-paid witnesses who had seen nothing all managing to give vague yet undeniably accurate accounts of the man they saw near St Mungo’s car park the morning the body was found, it is more than enough for alarm bells to start ringing up and down the country. London’s phone calls to Edinburgh and Glasgow cross-referencing past records are met with confirmations and agreements. Hogwarts University is surrounded by officers during afternoon seminars, their raid of the professor’s on-campus accommodation appearing in student’s mobile phone footage all over social media.
The door breaks. The police storm in. A few minutes pass.
They come out empty-handed.
The evening’s headline decorating ever newspaper and broadcast platform reads the following:
SUSPECTED MURDERER PROFESSOR ALBUS DUMBLEDORE ON THE RUN.
[ Daisy & Emma ] were both present with the rest of the Operation Auror team, having flown up to Scotland that morning. They fly back to London with minimal new evidence from Dumbledore’s house shortly after the unsuccessful arrest.
7:00pm - midnight: The Unofficial Remembrance Gathering
The unofficial wake is held in support of a friend; a colleague; an activist. It is as much a moment to sit and reflect on recent events as it is a chance to show moral support for Sirius Black. Organised by [ Marlene ], the gathering is to take place at The Leaky Bucket. All drinks will be half price.
The Order of the Phoenix will gather secretly upstairs for approximately twenty minutes for the sake of whether or not they are going to retaliate to the false claims that they were involved in Regulus’ kidnapping and murder, only to be informed by Minerva McGonagall that Albus Dumbledore has gone into hiding for his own safety. Nobody knows where he is, leaving the Order feeling lost without leadership.
Strapped for cash and often keen to help out, [ Ted ] will be working the bar that night.
Operation Auror has agreed to send some staff members to attend out of respect. Despite being tired from their tough day, [ Daisy & Emma ] will both be present. As they are representing their team, they have been asked by a superior to refrain from drinking.
Wanting to escape the Sacred 28 after a long, emotionally draining day at the funeral, [ Andromeda ] decides to pop in towards the end of the night. She is unknowingly followed by [ Bellatrix, Rabastan & Amycus ], identities hidden by the dark visors of their motorbike helmets, sent by Riddle to show those present in the pub exactly what happens when you hold an unauthorised event supposedly in respect for a Sacred member.
Others may also attend.
Please set threads on the date of 25th June.

Congratulations Charlie, you have been accepted for the role of Marlene McKinnon!
The bathroom smelled like bleach for days and she looked like a fucking mess, but she’d never liked her own reflection more...  She became as loud and bold as she’d always wished to be, fierce, not afraid to say what she wanted to say, consequences be damned.
Admin Becky: Behold, the daring, reckless, vodka aunt of the Order of the Phoenix -- be still my beating heart! There are a hundred and one things I love about Marlene, but in particular I adore just how aware she is of all that she’s done for herself. She’s shed the previous pressures from her parents, stuck her middle finger up at society, and built a life that she’s proud to call her own. Giving back to her found-family that is the Order by providing them with a refuge, a safe space, a haven, tips a delicious balance between being a rebellious bad girl and a full-of-heart guardian angel. That short-tempered sharpness mixed with such caring selflessness makes me super excited to see how she interacts with our other characters!
Please check out our checklist for joining Penumbra.

02. In Character
CHARACTER: Marlene McKinnon
CHARACTER’S PRONOUNS: she/her
FACECLAIM: Sofia Boutella
CHARACTER’S BIRTHDAY: April 2nd
PERSONALITY:
independent: (+) If the last years have proven anything, it’s how much Marlene values her independence. How much she’s willing to do to keep it. The years as parents picture-perfect daughter, a porcelain doll really that was always supposed to function without any mistakes, the years where she didn’t have any control of her own life whatsoever - at least if she didn’t want to be a huge disappointment, didn’t want to see their love for her slowly fading away - have left their scars. Now that she has it, she defends her independence with claws and fangs metaphorically speaking. It shows daily in her dedication and hard work in the Leaky Bucket.
caring: (+)  Even though it doesn’t always seem like it judging from her sharp-tongue most people get a taste from, Marlene is actually quite empathetic and cares a lot. With no regard for time, place and circumstances, she’ll always offer a shoulder to cry on, will always try to make sure that the people she cares feel good. To be perfectly honest, she probably doesn’t care half as much about her own well-being than about that of other people. That isn’t limited to just her friends either but includes new acquaintances and often complete strangers as well. As long as you don’t get on her bad side, she’ll always try to be there for you and care about you and your problems.
direct: (+)While she’s been taught that diplomacy is one of the most valuable abilities when dealing with others, Marlene has always preferred to be open and honest with everybody she interacts with. She isn’t exactly a fan of beating around the bush. In fact, in 9 out of 10 cases you can be dead sure that she’ll tell you the truth without mincing her words, no matter how hard, ugly and painful it might be. The truth can hurt, in her opinion, you better suck it up and learn to deal with it. No matter if she’s seen as impolite, tactless, rude or downright mean because of it, she’ll tell you just the way it is, nonetheless. That’s something that can be hard to deal with, but at least you can always rely on her telling you straight up to your face when you’re doing something stupid.
short-tempered: (-)  Patience has never been her strong suit, even though she was told that it was the most important character trait for a proper young girl (after docility, obviously). And it’s gotten worse over the years. It takes very little to get under Marlene’s skin and even less for her to blow up and throw a temper tantrum. Even when these outbursts are over as quickly as they come, they’re not the most fun thing to witness, to say the least.
self-destructive: (-)  On some subconscious level, Marlene loves fucking things up for herself. Whenever something good happens in her life, one can be pretty sure that sooner or later she’ll find a way to fuck it up and ruin it. A part of it can most likely be blamed on bright-burning desire to stay as independent and free as possible, something she protects fiercely. But most of it is probably due to the fact that a part of her is afraid that sooner or later they’ll all turn into her parents. If she gives them too much power over her, they’ll start wanting to change her, form her into what they want her to be and if she doesn’t stay proactive, maybe she’ll one day wake up and have lost herself again. Even outside of relationships, however, she doesn’t have the healthiest way to treat herself. Every now and then there are periods when she gets out of control and turns into more of a drinking, smoking, swearing and fucking around mess that she usually already is. Almost as if she feels she still needs to prove a point, as if she still needs to make up for the years she wasted trying to somehow live up to the impossibly high expectations her parents had for her. Or maybe she’s actually just punishing herself for never having managed that in the first place.
unforgiving: (-)  As easily as her affection and loyalty are given, once you’ve fucked it up, there’s no turning back. It’ll take a lot to truly make her reconsider your friendship once she calls you a close friend, but if you cross that line, she’ll drop you like a hot potato and won’t ever take you back, no matter how much you plead and beg. Life is already messed up enough without backstabbing people you can’t trust in your life and she won’t waste a single second on them.
BRIEF BULLET POINT BIO:
Marlene grew up as an only child, much to her own dismay. After all, the fact that she was the sole child meant that she was the only person her parents’ attention was focused on, the only one supposed to live up to the big expectations they had for their offspring. Sure, it was generally nice to be the center of attention, the one all the devotion and gifts could go to. After all, who doesn’t like to not having to share the spotlight? However, she’d have given it up in a heartbeat if that meant to not have to suffer through the pressure her parents put on her alone, to have somebody to have her back and help each other get through it. Quite frankly, she wouldn’t have cared about the age or gender of her sibling, just somebody to stand by her side and help her share the pressure.
Despite their current abundance of wealth, the McKinnons are ‘new-money’, have risen to the high society within the last two generations and that stuck Her parents never allowed her to forget that they’re still newcomers to some extent and that they have to try even harder to be perfect, to fit in with the upper society as well as possible, than those families who’ve been a part of it for centuries.
Even before she took her first breath, her parents already had her life planned out for her. She was supposed to be their perfect little girl, beautiful like a porcelain doll and just as quiet and obedient. They had big plans for her, she’d be the perfect example of how they’ve truly found their place in the high society. So she had a pretty strict schedule from a very young age on involving various activities and lessons her parents deemed necessary for a young girl of her status. Among those activities were lessons in Mandarin, learning how to play the piano as well as the violin, horse riding and lessons on etiquette as well as on politics and history later on. Nothing too complicated, though. After all, she should make proper conversation on various social events with that knowledge and not become a professor at college. Of course, anything but outstanding success in those lessons (and behavior, really) wasn’t permitted. Even years later Marlene can still recall the disappointed look in her parents eyes when she didn’t do something perfectly on the first try, how her mother’s lips became just a tiny bit smaller because she pressed them so firmly together, how the fine wrinkle between her father’s eyebrows, that should get even more prominent with the passing years, deepened just a little bit before they both demanded she tried again and this time did it well. And it was not like Marlene didn’t try to be as perfect as they wanted her to be. Quite the opposite, really. For years, she desperately gave her all to finally live up to their high expectations, but it was never enough. Even if she did manage to do something perfectly at the first try, there was still something else she was lacking. No matter what she did it never seemed to be good enough to please them. To fully earn their affection without a ‘but next time you’ll do better’ lying underneath it. The pressure she felt throughout her whole childhood was immense, unbearable really, and yet she persisted. Desperate for their approval and love, she continued to give at least 200% each day hoping that one day it’d be enough. It never was and the pressure continued to grow and Marlene continued to try harder.
Until she didn’t anymore. Nowadays, she can’t quite recall what the final straw was, what finally pushed her off the edge and made her stop trying to hard to be what they wanted her to be and instead try a little harder to be herself. Maybe it was the beginning of puberty hitting in, but she likes to believe that it started sooner, that she didn’t tolerate their bullying for that long. And in some ways, she truly didn’t. Even as a young girl of barely nine years, trying to be the best of her class, she showed small signs of defiance even if it was just being louder and bolder than her parents would like or spending time with people they didn’t approve of. It wasn’t much, but it was something. Still, it was nowhere near enough to relieve even some of that pressure. When puberty hit in at roundabout twelve years, she started breaking free for real. Did her best to distance herself from the image her parents created, the role they tried to force her into. It started with exchanging the pristine, proper tights her parents bought for her with fishnets that were ripped open pretty soon to add to the punk rebel-look she was now going for. Then she didn’t only cut her hair short on her own - which for itself already wasn’t exactly a piece of art - but also gave herself red highlights. The bathroom smelled like bleach for days and she looked like a fucking mess, but she’d never liked her own reflection more. Her parents, of course, were completely shocked, to say the least. To be perfectly honest, a part of her was sure that her mom would have a heart attack when she saw her new hair for the first time, but instead, she pulled through and just gave her a long and exhausting harangue about how Marlene was basically ruining their lives by being such a huge disappointment. Something that only encouraged her to stray away from what they wanted her to be even more. She became as loud and bold as she’d always wished to be, fierce, not afraid to say what she wanted to say, consequences be damned. For the first two weeks, fights and arguments happened on a daily basis in their family home, then her parents cut her off completely emotionally and didn’t talk to her apart from criticizing her passive-aggressively and what needed to be said when you live in one house together. It was tough, more than tough, there were countless times where Marlene wanted to give in, give up her strive to become her own person, but that was where her stubbornness came in and so she pulled through. Despite all the changes in personality and personal fashion, she still didn’t completely forgo her studies. Sure, she didn’t try half as much as before anymore, but that was still more than enough for a very good school diploma.
With her school diploma in hand, she signed up at Hogwarts University to study law. To be honest, it was the last thing she wanted, but after years of emotional distance and passive-aggressive warfare really, a part of her was desperately yearning to be closer to her parents again. And maybe, if she made that peace offer, they could be a family again without her having to give up her whole personality. As anybody but her probably could have said in advance, it was a stupid idea. The naive dream of a desperate, young girl who felt like she was all alone in the world with her parents barely talking to her. She’d learn the mistake of her ways pretty soon after only a few months of studying.
In the end, she dropped out of school and with that, completely lost her parents’ financial supports. The next years were tough, she worked a bunch of jobs - sometimes multiple at the same time - to hold herself over water and build a life for herself. Most jobs were a complete waste of time and so she seldom stayed long anywhere. What the days lacked in excitement and fun, she made up for with long nights out filled with drinks, hook-ups, and smokes. Desperately trying to find some purpose in life even if she’d never admit that out loud,
The Order of the Phoenix was the first thing to save her from this meaningless life. It was a wake-up call, really, something to give her life meaning again. However, her truel savior was something entirely different. When she saw the building, that had been half-burnt to a crisp during an electrical fire and was later going to become the Leaky Bucket, it was love at first sight, really, even though, objectively speaking, there was nothing much anybody could have loved. As silly as it sounds, though, (and Marlene is perfectly aware of how utterly ridiculous it sounds), there was simply this connection. She just knew she could turn it into something great. And she did. With a shit load of borrowed money, hard work (at least that she knew how to do after her strenuous childhood) and passion as well as some time, she managed to turn this ruin of a building into a great, popular pub and so much more. A safe haven where everybody could feel accepted for who they truly are without having to hide their true nature or pretend to be somebody entirely different. The sort of place she’s been craving all her life.
INTERVIEW:
i. How do you feel about your current occupation?
The question conjures the hint of a smirk onto her lips. “What’s there not to love?”, Marlene retorts, one eyebrow slightly arched up, “being your own boss means you get to do whatever the hell you want to.” Buying the Leaky Bucket is one of the best decisions she’s ever made and even though it cost her a shit load of money she had to borrow (money she still hasn’t been able to fully pay back), even though there are days where she wants to go back to bed again only a few hours after getting up because of exhausting the day already has been, she can’t imagine herself doing anything else. Can’t imagine ever not being her own boss again. She’s never particularly enjoyed following orders - not to mention stupid ones and from the few jobs, she worked to earn the money for the Bucket, she can tell that there are plenty of idiotic bosses out there with even more idiotic orders - and now that she’s had a taste of what it means having complete freedom over your life, not have to listen to anybody, she won’t ever go back to being employed.
ii. What song would you say describes yourself?
“My complex personality can’t possibly be described with one song.” Oh, she’s well aware of how arrogant it sounds, but there’s nothing she can do about it, it’s only true, after all. And to be perfectly honest, it isn’t even meant to flatter herself. If anybody knows how many fucked up sides her personality has, it’d be herself. “I think ‘She’s Thunderstorms’ from the Arctic Monkeys is a good fit. It strongly depends on my mood, though, so my response might be completely different tomorrow.”
iii. Does reputation matter to you?
“Do I look like it does?” It’s a rhetorical question really, the ripped fishnets who’ve seen better days, the tousled hair that looked like it either hadn’t been combed in days or she’d just had sex, the days-old eyeliner, a too big flannel shirt tied around her hips. It’s not the look of somebody who cares what you think about her, not the one you’d expect from somebody of her upbringing. There used to be a time where she thought her reputation mattered to her only to realize it was her parents’ approval and love that truly mattered to her. It doesn’t anymore, though, hasn’t had for years. It doesn’t matter what we’re talking about, be it clothes, relationships, language, behavior - Marlene McKinnon does as she pleases and if anybody else has a problem with that, they can fuck off.
iv. What is your relationship with your parents like?
“What relationship?”, she responds dryly letting out a scornful snort. “How can you have a relationship with somebody if you haven’t talked to them in years?” That probably says all anybody ever needs to know about her ‘relationship’ with the people who brought her into this world. Calling them parents would already be a too affectionate term for how she feels about them. When she told them she’d drop out of Hogwarts after one year, they told her to either go through with it like somebody worthy of the McKinnon name would or she wouldn’t be their daughter anymore. So she shrugged and simply left. What sense would it have made to argue with them? After all, they’d made it perfectly clear how they expected her to be from a very young age, ever since she took her first breath really. Her own stupidity was to blame for having believed they could see past the expectations they had for her and accept her for who she was. She didn’t even go upstairs to grab the rest of her things that she hadn’t taken with her to her new flat. Fuck them. And fuck her parents. That was the last time she was at the town villa she grew up in, the last words she exchanged with her parents and she doesn’t intend on changing that any time soon or ever really. They’re not her family anymore.
v. What languages can you speak?
“Let me see, I was raised bilingually in French and English. I had to learn Mandarin because as my dear father always liked to say the Chinese are going to rule the world someday if they keep on growing like that”, she rolls her eyes slightly, “Had Latin in school which, of course, I can’t speak because it’s dead and all that crap, but for a while, I was quite good at reading it, actually. I know Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese well enough for a simple conversation, nothing too complicated, though.  But if you know French and Latin, they all just kind of come easy to you.” She shrugs slightly.  “Additionally, my nanny was from Russia so I know my fair share of that. It’s a little rusty, though, just like my Mandarin.”
vi. If your home was on fire and you could only save one item, what would you choose?
“The deed for the Leaky Bucket.” It’s a response she doesn’t even have to think about, no matter if it’s the most unpractical one or not. Material things like her smartphone, clothes or other stuff are all replaceable and the Leaky Bucket is the most important thing in her life, her second home, her purpose really. There’s nothing she cares about as much as she cares about that building she built up to the popular pub it is now after seeing the half-burnt building and falling in love with it at the first sight.
vii. Which Hogwarts University faculty did you study at? The Gryffindor School of Applied Science, the Ravenclaw School of Humanities, the Slytherin School of Social Science, or the Hufflepuff School of Art?
“Slytherin School of Social Science”, she says and grimaces slightly at the memory. One fucking year of her life wasted there on studying law. In retrospect, she has no idea why she even thought it was worth her time. Why after all these years she still tried to make her parents happy. Because it was only for them that she’d even considered it, not only to mention go through with it. After a complicated youth during which she argued with them on a daily basis, did her best to distance herself from the doll they wanted her to be and ensure that they understood that she’d never be that girl, she thought that there might still be hope for them to grow closer to them. So she did what she knew they’d always planned for her to do, expected of her really: study law at the Slytherin School of Social Science at Hogwarts. She hated it from the very first day. Never before had she done something more boring and terribly annoying. And yet, she pulled through for a whole year. Not that even the fact that she did it despite being obviously miserable was enough to satisfy her parents. No, all they could talk about was how it was absolutely unacceptable that she wasn’t at the top of her class, that she wasn’t passing every exam with flying colors. The moment they told her on Christmas morning that if she finally wrote an exam where she got all the points was the day they’d be proud of her, it was the final straw. The moment she truly realized that they’d never accept her for who she was,
vix. What is your social media username?
“Let’s be honest, I change my instagram handle almost as often as my underwear.” It sounds like an exaggeration, but it’s true. She changes it at least weekly, if not multiple times a week. It’s not always a completely new handle, though, she often reuses names she’s already used in the past, but so far none has been good enough to stick. Or maybe it’s just the fact that “Right now, it’s ragefulthinking, though.”
also, have a little pinterest board for her here (x)

Congratulations G, you have been accepted for the role of Rita Skeeter!
Rita was a sheep throughout high school. She was the girl left out of most circles. She was the friend who had to walk behind everyone else on the sidewalk, the friend who was ‘forgotten’ to be invited to the movies -- being able to write about other people, however rita wanted to… it was the most singular powerful feeling she’d ever endured. Suddenly, she wasn’t the one being left out of any narrative, because she was the one writing it.
Admin Becky: Hooooo boy, I am so excited to see Rita Skeeter grace our dash with her gossip-stirring, story-manipulating, reputation-breaking self. I love the journey she has been through to get to where she currently is, using journalism as her own platform of revenge, finding power in the clack of her keyboard as she undoubtedly works tirelessly through the night to boost the egos of those she likes and destroy those she doesn’t. Will she be happy with the success she’s reached or will she end up wanting more? And if so, how far is she willing to go to get there? G, I’m thrilled to have you join us and can’t wait to see how Rita’s own story unfolds.
Please check out our checklist for joining Penumbra.

FACECLAIM: tati gabrielle
CHARACTER’S BIRTHDAY: 13th march 1995
PERSONALITY:
+ perseverent, resolved, cunning
- manipulative, vicious, deceitful
BRIEF BULLET POINT BIO:
life was never hard for rita skeeter. underline it. bold it. life was never, ever hard or difficult for her. her parents loved each other dearly, and worked hard to put things on the table. they always made sure to get rita the nicest things they could afford. they always made sure to spoil her with what little they have, and make her feel loved in their banged up, small house- and up until she was about 12, rita loved her life. she loved her family. she loved every single thing that the world offered her.
until things, inevitably, changed. rita realised one day that the ‘jokes’ people made about her skin colour, or the way they’d turn their nose up at her lesser branded items.. it wasn’t just a joke. people genuinely disliked her in high school, and learning that was like her entire life came to a screeching halt. she’d never been told she was anything but smart, and beautiful, and lucky- by her parents, but as she went into high school… everything was a competition. and somehow rita was always the loser. she wasn’t nearly as well off and rich as she thought she was. she was just some girl, wearing secondhand clothes, or last season’s Chanel.
rita had two choices once she hit 16 years old. she could either try to ignore what people said, and how they laughed and acted around her OR she could change. she could flourish. she could become what they wanted from her. they wanted a rich, uppity, spoilt rotten girl- well, that’s exactly what she set out to be.
over the case of one summer, rita changed from wearing hand-me-downs and secondhand clothing, to saving every damn pound she could, and buying the nicest, neatest, cleanest things she could find. she was not going to be laughingstock anymore.
but, it didn’t work. rita came to school, and she was still same old rita. the boys found her annoying. the girls thought she tried too hard. no matter what rita did- she didn’t fit in, and never would fit in.
rita was a sheep throughout high school. she was the girl left out of most circles. she was the friend who had to walk behind everyone else on the sidewalk. the friend who was ‘forgotten’ to be invited to the movies.
she was always trying to do anything and everything she could to be liked- even if that meant spilling gossip, or news, moments after she’d sworn to keep her lips sealed. her peers’ approval was everything rita craved in life.
when rita went to Ravenclaw, she had no idea what she was going to do- she’d long since distanced herself from her parents once she’d learned that being close to them ‘wasn’t cool’. honestly, rita cared a lot about what people thought about her, to the point where it took over her entire life.
introduction to journalism was just a class rita thought she’d try out and never think of again. she had no real passions, or drives, or dreams. but… the class changed everything for her.
being able to write about other people, however rita wanted to… it was the most singular powerful feeling she’d ever endured. suddenly, she wasn’t the one being left out of any narrative, because she was the one writing it.
journalism became rita’s best friend, which was ironic because she’d never really had any before. now, she told herself she didn’t need to. but when rita sunk her claws into something, she really sunk her claws in.
nobody knew the name skeeter. that was another obstacle. after rita finished her degree- not many people were willing to hire her, because the name skeeter wasn’t as well known as ‘black’ or ‘malfoy’, or even ‘lovegood’. but rita was not one to ever give up easily, and she worked odd freelancing jobs, until somebody finally took pity on her and gave her something more steady
rita didn’t even hesitate to write something slightly outlandish. her first article was about the difference in schools- comparing gryffindor to hufflepuff, and calling them ‘two sides of the same coin, often copying each other, but blind to this fact’. she took interviews she did from a few alumni, and copy and pasted what she could to get the result she wanted. the end piece? gryffindor slagging hufflepuff off and calling them the ‘lesser’ school. the result was instantaneous- although she hadn’t won any awards with her interviewee’s- rita’s article was all anybody could talk about. this wild, juicy article, from a young women. a novice basically. rita had never been popular in her life, but it was definitely a feeling she could start getting used to.
there aren’t many people that rita hasn’t blasted at this point. she has no shame in finding out gossip and immediately writing about it. most of the time she doesn’t really fact check, or ask other parties for their opinions. it doesn’t really matter to her. the only person rita is looking out for is herself.
however, there are some people who hold power and riches, and rita would do anything to get closer to them. not to exploit them, but to gain more power of her own. lucius malfoy is one of these people. his power is palpable, and rita knows she’s a bit pathetic around him. she sucks up to him, and begs for his approval, like a stray lonely cat. but if anybody can get her even higher up in life- it’s him.
rita collects gossip like it’s currency. she has eyes and ears everywhere she can, and likens herself to being perez hilton. nobody breaks news like rita does. she’s willing to work around the clock to get her scoop, and ensure it’s a good one.
INTERVIEW:
i. How do you feel about your current occupation? ❝ please, don’t you read my articles? i am the creme-de-la-creme, the cream of the crop. i feel absolutely marvellous about my occupation. i do it, and i do it well. did you know i get fan mail from floo? gods, you can do anything in this world with all these new and bubbling networks- let me tell you that. ❞
ii. What song would you say describes yourself? ❝ candy by doja cat. i was going to say truth hurts by lizzo, but that’s probably a bit too overdone and cliche by now, and the last thing i’ll ever be is a cliche.❞
iii. Does reputation matter to you? ❝ oh, absolutely. people won’t talk to you or read your stuff if they think you’re a nobody. in this world, who you are is currency. who you know is everything. you need to get your foot in that door, or you’ll end up a big fat zero. ❞
iv. What is your relationship with your parents like? ❝ i don’t have time for them much if i’m being honest. i work a lot, and am busy mostly. we speak every now and then. they’re very … different from i am. they’ve always been 9-5 drudgers. nothing wrong with it, of course, they’re lovely people. what was the question again? let’s move on - back to me -instead, shall we? ❞
v. What languages can you speak? ❝ english, french, some german, some spanish. a little bit of mandarin. i need to be able to speak to my sources as best as i can, so i taught myself as best as i could. you never wanted to be the dumbest person in a room. ❞
vi. If your home was on fire and you could only save one item, what would you choose? ❝ my favourite pen. i know it sounds like such a snooze, but i got it when i graduated. it’s a beautifully, hand crafted pen, with my name along it. i splurged and bought it for myself when i started publishing more articles. it’s more of a novelty than anything else, but it was extremely expensive. it’s a reminder to me, to always work for what i strive for.❞
vii. Which Hogwarts University faculty did you study at? The Gryffindor School of Applied Science, the Ravenclaw School of Humanities, the Slytherin School of Social Science, or the Hufflepuff School of Art? ❝ ravenclaw of humanities, of course. i majored in journalism. it was a magnificent school. i don’t mean to start any drama, but i would say it was one of the more upper class schools, if you get what i mean.  no riff raff. ❞
vix. What is your social media username? ❝ sincerelyskeeter, make sure to tweet me or dm me if you have anything juicy to tell me. ❞

Congratulations Loren, you have been accepted for the role of Lily Evans!
Yet, she has never given up anyone as a lost cause, it’s simply not in her nature. Lily will be burned a hundred times by a hundred different people and never give up hope that the best of someone will eventually come out.
Admin Ash: Loren -- so sorry for the delay, but we believe the best things come to those who are incredibly patient with their admins! And with that said, we’re absolutely in love with your modern interpretation of the vivacious Miss Evans. I particularly adored this quote because from the very beginning you’ve captured the very essence of who Lily Evans is. Her need to make the world a better place than it is now is a relentless endeavor, and it needs someone like this fiery, tireless girl and her particular brand of passion and stubbornness at the helm of the cause to keep it burning, keep it going. She’s been playing a backseat role to The Order for some time, but these trying times in London are definitely going to force her from the background, and I can’t wait to see just how she’ll rise to the occasion!
Please check out our checklist for joining Penumbra.
01. Out of Character
NAME: Loren
AGE: 29 (so old)
YOUR BIRTHDAY: March 6
PRONOUNS: She/her
TIMEZONE: GMT
02. In Character
CHARACTER: Liliana “Lily” Isabel Evans
CHARACTER’S PRONOUNS: She/her
FACECLAIM: Maria Pedraza
CHARACTER’S BIRTHDAY: 30 March, 1995
PERSONALITY:
(+) Empathetic
Her strongest quality, her greatest strength and weakness. She looks for commonalities, she forges connections. It has always allowed her to see past the veneer someone will put out there, and make friends in the unlikeliest of places. Friendships that are sometimes wrong for her, that sometimes burn her. Yet, she has never given up anyone as a lost cause, it’s simply not in her nature. Lily will be burned a hundred times by a hundred different people and never give up hope that the best of someone will eventually come out.
(+) Dependable
Lily is a disorganised mess, true, but you can always count on her. She will show up, no matter the time. She will have snacks in her bag, a ready shoulder to lean on. Yes, she runs late. No, she can’t live without coffee. But when it matters? She’s there, always ready to smack down the guy that made her friend cry or build them up if their confidence has crashed. She exhausts herself, running behind everyone else, but the idea of letting people she cares about down burns her more than the exhaustion gets to her during the day.
(+) Charismatic
She wears charm like a second skin. Her ready smile and quick wit have always made her a hit with people. It helps her during her working day, keeping that pep in her step and ready laugh in her throat. She is seldom seen upset or annoyed (she saves those moments for the medicine storeroom when everything is too much and her heart feels like it’s about to pierce her lungs, or the solitude of her bedroom as she scans over her sister’s Facebook page and sees no trace she ever existed in her life). She is charming, down to her bones.
(-) Stubborn
Two syllables feel like an understatement when it comes to describing how very headstrong Liliana Isabel Evans truly is. She never lets up, once her teeth are sunken into an idea, she will push and push until she is out-maneuvered or gets her own way. She has a way about her, a way of making people see her side, and she never loses a fight gracefully. She is starting to learn to bite her tongue, pick her battles, but it’s a learning process for her and it’s hard to relinquish the habit of a lifetime.
(-) Explosive
Her fuse is long, and while Lily can be friendly and sweet most of the time, she has a dark side. Her main problem is that she keeps everything inside, every grievance, and eventually it spills. No, it doesn’t spill, it  bursts. Like a bottle of coke, shaken to the point the gas is pushing the lid off, her temper flares through her and she will snap at things - large or small. She has a reputation for slamming people back with sharp tongued arguments that don’t exactly make her little Miss Popular at that moment in time. She has probably incurred the wrath of folk she should have never crossed with this trait.
(-) Overachiever
Her desire to prove herself has always manifested itself this way. Sometimes it was achieving her best in dance, or gymnastics. Other times it was in subjects. More often than not, it was at the behest - the push, the shove - of a sister who saw her as competition and not a sibling. Now as a student nurse, she pushes herself to the point of exhaustion. One of these days, she’s going to make a mistake that she won’t be able to move past because she is simply so tired from all of her work to try and get in the action as soon as possible.
BRIEF BULLET POINT BIO:
Lily was born the youngest of two daughters, to a Spanish mother and a British father. She learned to speak her mother’s tongue alongside British, which she would say is her first language. However, her mama was always rather insistent that all gossiping should be done in Spanish, so as not to allow people to know what they were saying. What would the neighbours think, after all?
The Evans girls were ice and fire, they could complement one another as often as they butted heads with their mutually competitive natures. Lily was never as good in school as her sister, but her sister never as inexorably interesting as Lily. So it was, her sister would outsmart her in every sense of the word when it came to academics - but in wit, in connections to people, Lily flourished. Both coveted what the other had, Lily would extend the olive branch to her sister, invite her out with her and her contemporaries, but her sister would scoff with a roll of her eyes.
Secondary school was where Lily really, to coin a phrase, blossomed. She shook off her sister’s shadow and joined various student groups. She found her interests lay in science, in math, in people. She knew she wanted to be a nurse from the age of sixteen. Her sister sneered. A nurse was just so… low brow, in her opinion, a person who was aiming for the higher echelons of their society.
Her sister wasn’t the first person to mention Hogwarts University to her. The institution had caused a stir in their town, such a strange name, since one of Lily’s older friends was accepted to those hallowed halls. There was something about the school that appealed to her, as she came into her final two years of school, nestled so far from where she lived and surrounded in beauty. Something about the deans, the leaders, of the school called to her.
She spent her time researching what she could find, and her sister sensed her interest. Being in the year above her, she put it down as her second choice, if only to spite Lily, though one of the Oxbridge choices were the top, of course. Bothered, but excited for her sibling, she waited with her as her acceptance emails rolled in. Her first choice was her only offer, no word from Hogwarts. She tried to comfort her sister, who was more rattled than she let on, and shook off Lily’s kind words. She told her it was just a cushion for where she wanted to really go, that she didn’t care in the slightest.
Not holding much hope if her sibling hadn’t received any communication from the school, Lily found herself in a similar position twelve months later, only her parents were with her while her sibling was away. They had supported her journey through the education system, encouraged her when she struggled, and when she was accepted to her dream school - they were all so delighted for her. She messaged her sister, who simply sent her a thumbs up back, and the fissure in their relationship widened. Years of resentment piled into a wall, neither of them knew how to overcome it.
Studying nursing, so far from home, was a shock to Lily’s system at first. But she quickly made friends and found different societies to join. She was always interested in matters of social justice, so stumbling into the Order was a pleasant delight to her. She had no idea what she was about to join, but there was an energy - an electricity - to their meetings that ignited something in her. Something like hope, hope that she had found a place where she belonged, where they could make a difference.
Her sister came to visit her just before her final exams in her first year, spent the whole weekend sneering and mentioning how much better her own university was, how small and squat the halls were where Lily resided, and left early on Sunday when her boyfriend came to pick her up. Lily told herself it was jealousy, but the attitude still stung.
Being a part of the Gryffindor school enabled Lily to meet many like minded people who were aiming for a similar profession to her, she enjoyed the closeness of it all, university was one of the best times in her life, and she often thinks back on the parties and events she attended with a nostalgia that aches. Living in that bubble, she found herself with the time and the ability to really feel like she was part of something bigger than she was. Involved in something important.
Nothing compared to the Order, she took a backseat role in the first two years of her time at Uni, handing out flyers and helping organise events, not really involved in the depths of their work. It wasn’t until she was called at three in the morning to come and help patch injuries up she was suddenly thrust into the midst. She took it in her stride, and grew more involved as her time at Hogwarts began drawing to a close.
The fractured relationship with her sister has only grown wider in division, Lily is vocal and passionate about her views and never apologises for taking that road. Her sister prefers to have power on her side, and Lily knows that half of her attitude comes from the fact it’s simply the opposite to hers - the other half is that her boyfriend is a rich cricket playing arse who slips poison into her ear and her sibling is happy to go along with it. Sorry, her fiance, Petunia made sure that Lily was - for once - the first to know about it when she sent a picture of the diamond glittering on her ring finger and nothing else.
She is now living with her best friend, still involved with the Order, and working day and night to be the best nurse she can be. Is it enough? Lily doesn’t know, but she is determined to make the most of it.
INTERVIEW:
i. How do you feel about your current occupation?
Lily is a small woman, slight and wrapped in a buzz of energy. Sitting with a coffee in her hands, her face immediately brightens at the question, “Student nursing? Oh, I absolutely adore it,” taking a healthy sip from her mug - a sound of appreciation humming from her throat - she sets it down and folds her arms on the table as she leans forward, “I’m so close to finishing and being fully qualified, you know? It’s exciting! It feels like it has taken me so long to get here but I know I’m just being impatient. Honestly, I can’t imagine doing anything else.”
ii. What song would you say describes yourself?
“Landslide! By Fleetwood Mac!” the answer is immediate and she laughs as she sees the surprise register, “I know, it’s not the kind of song you would probably imagine me being into - my dad is a huge Fleetwood Mac fan though, and he would always play it on the piano - he’s a music teacher - and when I heard the real version, it just really resonated with me. You know when you hear a song and it just… touches your soul? That was definitely it for me.”
iii. Does reputation matter to you?
Eyes widen and then a look crosses her face. It’s somewhere in between amusement and confusion, with a good dose of scepticism thrown in for good measure, “Do I look like I care about reputation? No thanks, that’s my mum and my sister,” she scoffs, expression falling slightly, and fingers moving to the curls framing her face, pushing some behind her ears. She takes a moment and then continues to talk, “I don’t care what people think about me, the only person I will ever have to answer to is myself, you know? But they are a lot more about appearances, more concerned with what people think of them. I just know I would never be happy if I had to live like that.”
iv. What is your relationship with your parents like?
This time, she smiles warmly, and picks her mug up again. “I am pretty close to both of them, I love them dearly,” she nurses the mug a little longer, fighting with herself, before speaking again, “I am much closer to my dad, though. We are both on the same side of the coin. He’s probably more chilled out than I am, to be fair to him, I got that from my mum. But I know he’s always a hundred percent on my side. I can call him at any time of the day if I’m in trouble, and he’ll be there in a heartbeat. He won’t scold me, or make me feel bad. He’s my guy.”
v. What languages can you speak?
“Pues, puedo hablar Español, gracias a mi mama,” a cheeky grin crosses her face, “I’d say English is my first language, but my mum is from Cadiz, so she wanted to have a slice of home here. My sister and I can both talk it. My dad tries, but he has same range as Pitbull when it comes to numbers. You know - uno, dos, tres, cuatro -? I think he definitely understands more than he lets on.”
vi. If your home was on fire and you could only save one item, what would you choose?
Grimacing, her mug goes back down, and hands rise to her cheeks. “I instinctively wanna say my laptop, because it has literally everything on there. My school work, my pictures, and some other things I hold dear. But if I was being totally honest? I know I’m a nostalgic shit, I would probably save Edmund, my very worn stuffed rabbit my grandmother made for me when I was born,” she pauses, cheeks going red as she smiles shyly, “Eddie has been there for it all, even when I lost my virginity, and I think losing him would probably devastate me more than I am comfortable admitting to.”
vii. Which Hogwarts University faculty did you study at? The Gryffindor School of Applied Science, the Ravenclaw School of Humanities, the Slytherin School of Social Science, or the Hufflepuff School of Art?
“The Gryffindor School of Applied Science!” she laughs, previous embarrassment forgotten, and nods her head, “I mean, I’m not sure where else you expected me to study nursing! Honestly, I graduated with my First two years ago and I still wear my old sweatshirt, it was the most liberating time of my life!” Sighing wistfully, she continues, fingers drawing in the sugar granules on the fake wooden table top, “Living away from home for the first time in my life, making these life long friends, the whole thing was amazing.” She nods, and drops her voice down to a conspiratorial whisper, “But honestly? I wish I was better at art, the Hufflepuff bunch always seemed like my kinda people too.”
vix. What is your social media username?
Snorting, her eyes roll, “I’m the most unimaginative person,” she pulls her phone out, and opens a couple of apps up to reveal it, “My Instagram and Twitter are just “lilzevans”, I couldn’t come up with anything better or more interesting!” Her smile is unfaltering, a shoulder shrugging, “If you want to see cute pictures of my cat or selfies Dorcas helps me with, definitely follow me. I can’t promise you anything more interesting than that though. Oh, and cake, and coffee. Can’t forget those break room sneak peeks.”

PLOT DROP.
There’s only way to be rid of a rat -- extermination. This was always part of his plan, in the end. The disappearance? A mere distraction. The ransom? A carefully orchestrated goose chase. But the fate of the young Black heir was sealed the moment he made the fatal mistake of not covering his digital tracks.
His orders are simple: Kill Regulus Black.
[ Sunday 16th June ]
1:00 AM: The deadline passes, the ransom demand unadhered to fully as planned -- thanks to Lucius. [ Emma & Rabastan ] know the consequences of opposing Riddle, and see his orders through, lest his next one be to get rid of them. It is Rabastan that delivers the life-ending blow to young Regulus, watching the lights leave dark eyes. Then, Emma must utilize her forensics knowledge to not only clear the scene of evidence and traces of their presence, but plant false evidence onto the body for the authorities (laughably, likely herself) to uncover.
3:00 AM: Spilled hospital-grade canteen coffee hits the ground. A woman in scrubs releases a blood-curdling scream into the night, the body of Regulus Black discovered. The location -- the car park of St. Mungo’s Hospital. [ Andromeda ] is on shift and, once police tape barricades the area, she is asked to confirm his identity.
11:00 PM: Official statements, written by [ Daisy ] on behalf of the police and [ Bellatrix ] on behalf of her family, announcing the tragedy of Regulus’ death are issued to the press and the story is swiftly published by the Daily Prophet, the young heir’s face plastered on every newspaper cover and website homepage under the Triple M brand at [ Lucius’ ] request. The post-mortem team confirm that his death was caused by murder.
[ Monday 17th June ]
The investigation into the murder of Regulus Black begins. Operation Auror spends the day discussing potential suspects, gathered around a table littered with photos of those who may have a motive. A lack of evidence proving that anyone from the Order of the Phoenix is actually involved is pointed out by [ Alastor ], keen to lead them away from a scent that was false all along and focus on those more likely to be guilty, leading the team to expand their search.
The House of Black and all other Sacred 28 businesses make the decision to close their headquarters for the day as a show of respect to the young life lost. Tributes pour in, flowers filling the pavement outside the House of Black’s London office. [ Lucius ] uses his multimedia platforms to release a video appealing to the public for any information on the Black family’s behalf.
[ Tuesday 18th June ]
The following suspects are located and taken in for questioning by Operation Auror:
Sirius Black, the estranged brother of Regulus, rumoured to potentially be involved in the Order of the Phoenix. His motive includes frayed family connections, a history of unruly behaviour, and a not-so-subtle angry tip-off from his father.
[ Bellatrix ], a cousin of Regulus. Her motive includes the fact that, as Regulus’ eldest cousin, and due to Sirius being denied access to the family fortune, she is legally likely to gain what Regulus would have inherited upon his parents’ deaths
Evan Rosier, a distant, non-blood-related relative of Regulus. Regulus was found with a ticket stub for The Dungeon’s cloakroom in one of his pockets. Evan advises that he does not keep tabs on who visited the nightclub and refrains from answering any further questions without a lawyer present.
[ Wednesday 19th June ]
The Dungeon nightclub is inspected by Operation Auror one hour before opening, headed up by [ Alastor ] who takes great satisfaction in being able to investigate the venue. The team consequently turn up empty-handed apart from the club CCTV which gets sent for visual analysis. The club remains closed until further notice, ruining a number of weekend plans ( as pointed out by The Daily Prophet FlooNet account ).
[ Thursday 20th June ]
The following suspects are located and taken in for questioning by Operation Auror:
[ Amycus ], in the same social society as Regulus. Known by the police for his aggressive behaviour. Posted a video on FlooNet last month in which he claimed that he would kill Regulus for cheating in a drag race between the two of them -- which Amycus lost.
[ Andromeda ], a cousin of Regulus. She is rumoured to have distanced herself from the family over the past few years, her presence away from the public eye noted by investigators. Her motive is unknown but some suspicion arises at the coincidence of Regulus’ body being found at her place of work.
[ Narcissa ], a cousin of Regulus. Her motive is also unknown but, given tensions in the family, interviewing her may provide better insight into currently confusing dynamics and unanswered questions.
[ Friday 21st June ]
[ Maya ] announces on FlooNet that the new House of Black men’s clothing collection, which will replace the one destroyed by the Order of the Phoenix, will be named Regulus in his memory, with two-thirds of all proceeds going to charity.
[ Monday 24th June ]
Operation Auror visits the homes of those who may have more information on Regulus and, in an attempt to learn more about the Order of the Phoenix, speak to The Quibbler who have criticised the protest group on multiple occasions -- as well as, interestingly, the Sacred 28.
[ Rabastan ], in the same social society as Regulus. Was seen on CCTV at The Dungeon on a “date” with Alecto the same night as Regulus. Is soothed by the fact that he is aware of who Riddle had Emma frame with the false evidence.
[ Alecto ] in the same social society as Regulus. Was seen on CCTV at The Dungeon on a “date” with Rabastan the same night as Regulus.
Xenophilius Lovegood, known to vocally oppose the Order and the Sacred 28 through The Quibbler.
[ Ted ], known to vocally oppose the Order and the Sacred 28 through The Quibbler.
[ Emma ] watches on as the forensic evidence she planted on the body begins to reveal the framed murderer’s identity...
Please set threads between the dates of 16th June and 24th June.

Ash and I have got a new plot drop coming this weekend for you all and plenty of juicy ones in the works -- but this RP is just as much yours as it is ours, so we’d love to hear your plot wishlist.
This can be specific to your character ( such as testing their moral compass; putting them in an awkward situation; taking on a greater role in their career or group ) or specific to certain groups / everyone ( a concept for an Order act of rebellion or a Death Eater strike ). Your ideas can be as simple and bullet-pointed or as complex and extravagant as you’d like and we’ll do our best to weave them into our current plot timeline. Just shoot us a message!

NPC CONNECTIONS.
Aside from our playable characters, the Penumbra-verse is home to a varied bunch of non-playable characters -- and we’d love it if you could introduce us to some!
Tell us about an NPC who is significant in your character’s life, such as a family member, a colleague, an ex-lover, etc. They can be depicted however you see fit. For a few ideas, we’d suggest: a drabble of your character interacting with the NPC; a social media account for the NPC; a series of headcanons about the NPC.
