Me when I'm not eating a fruit: I mean I don't like all of them, but on the whole fruits are okay I guess
Me when consuming a fruit I like: there is a reason we say the gods drink nectar, and here on earth nectar makes fruit. Succulent. Restorative. Nourishing my mana reserves as well as the body. My hands are dripping with it and I will not -- can not apologize.

Managing a Remote Job & a Hybrid Job
I'm not sure what I was thinking when I accepted my Hybrid J5 while working my lovely Remote J1 (see My Résumé for details). Balancing two remote jobs is challenging enough, but making one of those now hybrid —where I was expected to show up in person twice a week - the stakes got higher. To make matters worse, the hybrid role had open concept seating (below, left) where I could see over my assigned cubicle, and my coworkers sit all around me in their own open cubicles. The only place where I could have any privacy in a "closed-door" setting were in a handful of meeting rooms (below, right), thankfully bookable via the Outlook > Resources feature (if you aren't familiar with this feature, employers can set up rooms as Resources within the company's Outlook system to make them reservable by employees).
How did I work my Remote role during in-office days for my Hybrid role?
This was a tricky one to get used to, to say the least. All of my overemployed roles up to this point, thankfully, were fully remote, meaning I could easily juggle each role's meetings around each other (often back to back), and block off times for known meetings. For example, if my remote role had a meeting from 11am-noon, I would put a block in my calendar for my hybrid role as soon as I knew about it, and set the visibility of that meeting to Private and my availability during that time to Busy. That way, anyone else in my hybrid role wanted time with me, they would see that I was busy during that time but couldn't see the details of why.
However, with the added complication now that I needed to be physically present for my hybrid role, how would I get time to sneak away somewhere private in order to take a call for my Remote role? Here is how:
First, I minimize the chances of me needing to take meetings/calls for the remote role on these days. I would block out time in that calendar with "Deep work" or "heads-down time".
I would do things in advance: draft important emails, updates, and deliverables the day before for the remote role that need to be sent out on these days.
For meetings that I can control the timing of, I would schedule them during my commute (especially if they don't require a video presence, such as update meetings or leading my direct reports), or use the lunch break during the hybrid role's day, so that folks don't notice I am gone from my desk. I would often take these in my car or in a bookable meeting room in the remote role's office.
For remote role's meetings that I must take (if you take the steps above, these should be minimal), I would block off time in my hybrid role's calendar while reserving a room and walk up to those rooms to sign in. Pro tips: book rooms that are farther away from people that you work with to minimize the chance of them walking by and seeing you in there by yourself, frequently.
I use a mouse jiggler on an old laptop at home that is signed into my Remote work's MS Teams. This device will move your mouse slightly every few seconds, guaranteeing your status to not fall into "Away" mode. Of course, I would still have the same account signed onto my mobile device's MS Teams app so that I could unassumingly check/respond to it while at my desk for the hybrid role.
Maximizing the Hybrid Role
For the days that I had to go in for the hybrid role “heads-down” time for your hybrid role—I learned the hard way that it's important to go all in, show up visibly, and make your presence known. Don’t try to juggle both jobs in real-time at the office as it's too risky. Folks at the hybrid role will notice your disinterest, disengagement, and avoidance if you focus too much on your remote role while you're there. For any remote role's work that you must do, either try to do some quick planning of how you're going to do it on your phone (ChatGPT is a great resource for making an executable outline of a plan, no matter how high level), and execute on it later in the safety of your home.
Flying under the radar in the Remote Role
In my remote job, my primary goal was to do well but not be outstanding. I learned to keep my communications short, effective, and slightly delayed, as not to be the most responsive person on email or instant messaging.
Hybrid jobs tend to drain more energy from social interaction, commute, performance visibility. I find that it often equates to me having less brainpower left for my remote job, even if it’s low-maintenance. Therefore, with some good planning ahead, I am able to take steps to mitigate risks on both roles & still perform well.
more details on how i managed a remote & hybrid job in my upcoming e-Book here.
