Edutainment For All
176 posts
(Commissions Closed!)Howdy! This is @pbscore/Jackson Joy’s art blog (finally). I’m a 28 year old AfroLatine artist and filmmaker! Here, I’ll be posting my own art related to weirdcore/oddcore, surrealism, nostalgiacore, and pbscore (an aesthetic/movement that’s about lighthearted educational media for children, and to some extent, teens and adults. The main inspirations are vintage edutainment shows like Sesame Street, Arthur, Between the Lions, etc. So that means this aesthetic is completely SFW and needs to stay that way😊). I’ll be posting my own illustrations, music, videos, and writing🕊

Alice by Jan Svankmejer was the first film I saw in my freshman year, during my time in film school and it has stayed with me all these years because of its odd, charming, and surreal style. I love the stop motion animation mixed with live action scenes to retell a very popular story in a unique way. Honestly, this film is the reason I seek out the more offbeat and independent films that have an innocent and dreamlike quality to them.
I’m making some thumbnails for some scenes in the film that I want to turn into my own ‘movie poster’ for this film and I love how these came out. Who knows? I might do a series of them while talking about my thoughts on this film in a video in the future 👀 😉
As always, I use my trusty Crayola crayons and ballpoint pen 🖊️ to sketch and color these ideas out! I love the textures I get and I’m excited to continue making these process videos!
[Video description: me, an artist with brown skin, coloring in pen drawings of a blonde haired girl from the movie ‘Alice’. She is wearing a pink dress and is sketched in pen in various scenes from the film. There is light jazz music playing while I am coloring in the sketches with crayons. End description.]

Some recent drawings of Lionheart! I haven’t been doing much digital art and frankly, I’ve gotten sick so much recently so I haven’t been able to do much of anything 😭 (description in alt text).

Hi! Just wanted to say that I really loved your “come and see” art piece and I’m sorry that person gave you such harsh backlash on it! I think there’s something very powerful about taking a very intense, dark and horrifying piece of media and make it something that looks almost soft? Like I feel like I am not looking at the soldier who has to fight to survive but I’m looking at a child who is attempting to come to terms (to the best of their ability) with all of the horrors going on around them.
I’m also Jewish, family is from Ukraine, and I have family members who died in the war, so I appreciate you showcasing a not so well known piece of media which is shown from the perspective of a Soviet writer and director, especially because the Soviet government tried to close censor the film and essentially stop it from being made entirely for 8 years.
Anyway sorry for the entire rant and I hope it isn’t too much to read through! I appreciate your art and I appreciate your creativity!
Hello! Thank you for sending this insightful message because it really does capture a lot of the same feelings that I had when viewing the film and learning about its history. I’m glad that you decided to share your thoughts on this topic and hopefully, it does motivate other folks to seek this film out and watch it (if they are able to handle it). The fact that the U.S. government always finds a way to involve itself in any war films made about it and stops anyone from criticizing them to the point where we STILL have progressives ‘uwu supporting the troops’ is also what made me have a lot more respect for this film and it’s willingness to showcase the reality of what it’s like being the oppressed FROM their actual point of view and not from the pov of some ‘soldier’ who’s sad about killing them.
Again, thank you for the message and I appreciate your opinions on that piece of art! I’m not gonna engage with that person anymore seeing as how they’re not capable of understanding nuanced perspectives and just expect a lot of very online tumblr takes to speak for them.

Oh btw…
Thank you to everyone who did commission me! I have started work and I will be getting paid soon so I can catch up on other bills that are important and refill my savings account!
Y’all are awesome people and I appreciate all of the support that was sent my way!
I’m going to slow down on commissions since I’m going to be busy with teaching but…I do have some special things planned to share in another month or so! 🦁🌻🌤️

‘Come and See’ (1985) I drew this last year but was too insecure to post it because I didn’t think it was a ‘polished’ enough piece. I made this with an ink pen and Crayola crayons 🖍️ and it’s one of the pieces I am still proud of to this day. This is my take on a poster for the film of the same name, which is an anti-war horror film. It is a heartbreaking film but I think it’s a necessary watch for anyone looking for something realistic and harrowing to watch.
