Picture#4. Vespa mandarinia. Giant Hornets in the genus Vespa do not naturally occur in the Western Hemisphere. They range over Europe, Asia, and Africa, but...particularly Asia.. Wikipedia lists 20 species. Until recent discovery of V. mandarinia in BC and WA only V. crabro (European Hornet) had made its way to our hemisphere and established. In Europe I know of at least 2 Asian species that have invaded. One, at least, is having an impact on Honey Bees (V. velutina). One hopes that these additional species do not make it across the ocean (though they are expected) . #vespula #wasps #murderhornet

MURDER HORNET WEEKEND. #5. Last in the series. Fun. A species (Vespa manderinia) that is so big, obvious, painful, and destructive to human owned insects (i.e., honey bees) that is has created its own mythology (just look up #murderhornets on instagram or twitter). In a group like predatory wasps something has to be the biggest and the baddest, so here we are. Like all insect conspiracy theories, the degree and extent of its danger is somewhere downstream of the hype. How much damage will it do if it gets established? Hard to say, economically, its probably boring old beetles that are what we should really fear. <b> ~~~~~~~~~~{{{{{{0}}}}}}~~~~~~~~~~</b>
