We've got a new Paradox Sports Ambassador in the house! Dan Boozan just started climbing this summer and is already making huge strides through persistence and a positive attitude. He climbs without the use of his right arm, which was paralyzed in a biking accident. Three cheers for Dan! #adaptive #ambassador

What starts as a thought, an idea, becomes reality through action. So it was two winters ago when Paradox Sports ambassador Sean O'Neill and @petzl_official athlete @andresmarin22 came up with the idea to help Sean make the first paraplegic ice climbing ascent of Bridal Veil Falls. With the help of Leon Davis, @sparkshopclimbing videographers @kziechmann and Chuck Fryberger, this dream turned into the film Prevail, which captures the essence of independence and growth through the demystification of disability. Please watch and share this film to spread the message of inclusivity in outdoor adventure: www.vimeo.com/sparkshop/prevail

Something amazing happened this Saturday. In the words of our new Chairman of the Board of Directors, Timmy O'Neill: “At the beginning of October I took the chairman role of the Board of Directors at Paradox Sports for the next three years after a two year accidental MBA as Executive Director. At 8pm last Saturday night, another chapter of the story of PS began - the one of longevity for the organization and deeper, more enduring transformation. We raised 100K (and growing). And yet our work has just begun. Friends, family, citizens of the world – let’s power the possibility of two more programs in 2015 with $15,000 more in donations. If our mission aligns with your meaning, please give today.” We are on the verge of a great movement towards longevity at Paradox Sports and we need your help to do it. After raising $100,000 this past Saturday, we need just $15,000 more to make it to that place of sustainability. Donate here: http://paradoxsports.org/donate/ or contact us at [email protected] for more information. Photo credit to Will Strathmann Photography

Paradox MAYhem Wrap-Up
Tumblr media
The May 16th fund raiser at Movement Climbing + Fitness was a sweet and wet success. Despite the rain, we had hundreds of revelers toasting the release of Paradox Sports’ new Adaptive Climbing manual, on the heels of the previous days CWA adaptive climbing workshop. Our pals at New Belgium brought multiple flavors of their delicious effervescent canned beers plus their very own Shawn Hines wearing his cowboy hat. The live music featured our own Jamie Maynard playing with his band as well as Paul Kimbiris and other friends before the sky opened and cried Mary. Clif Bar and New Belgium both kicked down bikes to raffle and many of our excellent national and local partners gave product and services, and best of all they gave their belief and love to the mission of Paradox Sports. Thanks to everyone who gave their time, treasure and talents. Volunteers we love you dearly – especially the hard working raffle ticket hawkers.

Summer 2014 Top Ten
Tumblr media
The warm weather has arrived, and Paradox Sports is excited for a jammed packed summer of adventures! We have an incredible line up of events for this season, all of which you can find on the Paradox Calendar. Here are our Top Ten picks:
1 Mt. Rainier Veterans Ascent* July 1st- 7th: Starting on Tuesday night at Second Ascent in Ballard, we will have a talk and a keg to kick off our Mt. Rainier attempt, the first Veteran adventure of the summer season. A small group of wounded, injured, or ill veterans will join seasoned volunteer leaders for an unforgettable ascent of this 14,411-foot volcano in Washington State. The proposed summit day will be the 4th of July as a commemorative moment for all those who have served this country. In partnership with the Sierra Clubs’ Military Outdoors program and our friends at Outdoor Research and Marmot. Sign up here.
2 Grand Teton Veterans Ascent* July 12th - 16th: This will mark our third annual trip to Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming as we join with legendary Exum Mountain Guides to attempt to summit with up to 12 wounded, injured, or ill veterans. After two days of expert instruction, the team will ascend to the shoulder camp and bivouac. The next day is an early rise and climb from 11,000ft to the 13,775ft summit either by the original Owen-Spalding route or the airy Exum route. They will end with a descent and long hike back to the trailhead. Sign up here. 3 Cooper’s Rock Climb-a-thon July 19th: Cooper’s Rock Climbing Guides is hosting a fundraiser climbing competition to benefit Paradox Sports and the Coopers Rock Foundation. It’s based on vertical feet and prizes will be awarded to men’s and women’s first place and the climber that raises the most money. We love our super volunteers and organizations/businesses who lead the way with hard work, joy and community events - Big props Cooper’s Rock Climbing Guides. Sign up here.
4 Colorado River Veterans Rafting Trip* July 26th - 29th: We are teaming up with Utah’s Splore to offer an incredible 4-day, 3-night rafting and whitewater experience down the mighty Colorado River. The team includes up to 10 wounded, injured, or ill veterans who will raft and Stand Up Paddle, as well as fish, on the calm water of Ruby and Horsethief Canyons and then experience the roaring rapids of Westwater Canyon. Sign up here.
5 Cranberry Wilderness Veterans Backpacking Trip* August 21st - 25th: Who wants to walk in the woods and camp under the stars? We are going cross country backpacking with a team of veterans on a 5-day, 4-night adaptive trip through Birthplace of Rivers in Cranberry Wilderness with the Sierra Club Military Outdoors program. This trip also serves to raise awareness about preserving this premier landscape through an initiative to make it a National Monument. Sign up here.
6 Grand Teton Adaptive Climbing Ascent September 3rd - 6th: We will partner with Exum Mountain Guides for our late summer adaptive climb of the 13,775 Grand Teton. We can’t get enough of this rugged granite mountain. The expedition will follow the same route as the Veteran trip, with an ascent to the shoulder to camp after two days of expert instruction, and a climb to the 13,775ft summit the following day. More information about registration coming soon!
7 Yosemite Veterans Rock Climbing* September 9th - 12th: For the second year in a row, up to 20 wounded, injured, or ill veterans will meet in the iconic Yosemite Valley in partnership with the Yosemite National Park Service and Delaware North Company. There will be variety of climbs and activities including yoga, hiking, and a land stewardship project. The team will commemorate September 11th with multiple rock climbs including the summits of Half Dome and El Capitan. Sign up here.

"One arm and a good attitude beats two arms and a bad attitude any day." - Pete Davis Happy Birthday to Paradox Ambassador, Curriculum Director, @mammut athlete and total heartthrob, Pete Davis! Pete has been with us since the beginning and is currently spearheading our educational platform by delivering the Adaptive Climbing Curriculum and Manual to communities across the nation. He was born missing his right arm below the elbow and has been climbing since age 12. In 2012, he joined Craig DeMartino and Jarem Frye for the successful ascent of Zodiac, a 1,800-foot route on the SE face of El Capitan, becoming the first adaptive team in history to climb El Cap. Today he is celebrating by climbing desert towers in Moab with other adaptive athletes! #climbing #ice limbing #adaptiveclimbing #inspiration #motivation #elcap #yosemite #mountains
