The Science of Shipping
15 posts
This blog is really for fun. I find so many people who bash on other people's pairings and ships and see all the flaming and hate it causes. It's stupid. So this blog celebrates different pairings and the reasons why people ship them. Feel free to submit pairing ideas, I'm not sure if 'll go by request yet, but I'll at least see what people have to say. :) [Submission Guidelines]

In addition to everything mentioned above, both men have similar childhoods. Both were abused and neglected, and both lost their parents young. In Tony's case, his father was mostly mentally abusive and Tony feels he was abandoned in favor of Howard's work and, of course, Captain America. Presumably, his relationship with his mother was fairly good, but many of Tony's mental instabilities stem from Howard.
Bruce had a hard childhood as well. His father's work with radiation mutated Bruce's genes, making him more intelligent. This resulted in his father's hatred and jealousy of him. He called Bruce a monster, and would beat him violently. If this mental and physical abuse wasn't bad enough, Bruce's father murdered his mother, and eventually wound up in a mental institution because he was bragging about it. This is just one more area where these two could connect over their experiences and pain.
Marvel Pairing #4: Tony x Bruce
Tony Stark (Iron Man) x Bruce Banner (the Hulk)
Ha, my first yaoi pairing. XD Haters will be ignored. Don’t like, don’t read ;)
Warning: Spoilers from Iron Man and The Avengers will follow.
—-
Okay, so let’s start off with Bruce. Once a successful scientist, studying into gamma radiation and how to protect people from it, he’s becomes an outcast, hiding wherever he can to keep under the radar. Bruce’s ability is far more… explosive than the rest of the Avengers, and as such even among fellow “freaks” he doesn’t feel as though he fits in. Bruce is terrified of “the Other Guy” and what can happen if he lets him out. Bruce hates what he has become and wishes more than anything to just stop living, even to the point of suicide. In his words, “I put a bullet in my head and the other guy spat it back out.”
Because of his constant need to keep the Hulk under wraps, Bruce has developed a lot of mental instabilities. Perhaps he already had them and the whole experience has intensified them. Bruce constantly appears nervous and stressed, especially around any kind of armed guard or soldier. He sees the way people look at him, always watching for signs that the Other Guy might be poking through. Bruce is particularly irritated by what becomes Loki’s prison, knowing perfectly well who the cage was really meant for.
As is revealed at the end of The Avengers, Bruceis constantly angry. What is seen through the movie as nervousness and being jumpy is really his always fluctuating levels of frustration or anger. These fluctuations may have some tell-tale signs though. Bruce has a number of nervous twitches that he exhibits, probably while trying to keep this building rage in check. He has a tendency to blink rapidly when stressed, and sometimes his entire face actually twitches somewhat from the corner of his mouth.
Overall, Bruce feels as much like a monster as people see him. And it has taken a serious mental tole on him. But Bruce is not the only Avenger who wants to die or who sees himself as something less than human. Tony, the man in the metal suit. Genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist. Yet he’s not as happy as he’d like people to think.
Tony is extremely insecure. Like Bruce, he thinks he doesn’t deserve to live. Tony has never felt adequate his whole life, probably because of his father. Howard Stark paid very little attention to his son, resulting in many of Tony’s issues. The fact of “Captain America” now back and working with Tony only pours salt in his wounds, since to Tony, Howard felt more strongly towards Steve than him.
Tony uses the Iron Man as a way to make himself feel as though he has a place in the world. He needs to feel like he’s making a difference in someone’s life. It is his way of earning his keep. He is earning his right to live and to be a part of the Avengers by fighting and sacrificing himself. We see this time and time again. Yes, at the end of the Avengers we had that heart-stopping moment where Tony sacrifices himself by carrying the missile through the portal, knowing he probably wouldn’t make it back. However, even before that he showed a willingness to die for what they were all doing. When Hawkeye damaged the engine of the helicarrier, Tony chose to start spinning the blades manually. Yes, he told Steve how to slow the blades so he could get out, but Tony is not one to leave his fate to others. Genius that he is, he knew full well the risk he was taking, and he took it without hesitation, because in his mind if he dies doing something good, maybe it will make him be worth something. Maybe people will remember Iron Man, instead of Howard Stark’s son.
Bruce and Tony can connect on their insecurities and their pain. Tony sees Bruce’s ability as a gift. In fact, he seems rather fascinated by the Hulk and by Bruce. While the other Avengers may feel uncomfortable about Tony constantly poking fun at Bruce about “the enormous green rage monster”, and Bruce at first is skeptical about Tony, I think it means a lot to Bruce that Tony - unlike the others - is not afraid of him. Tony is constantly provoking Bruce, even encouraging him to “blow off some steam” in the scene where the Avengers are arguing in the lab. Bruce is unsure of Tony at first, but this simple fact that he’s not afraid means a lot to him. Everyone else seems to try and pretend the Hulk doesn’t exist, avoiding bringing him up at all times, yet Bruce can always see the fear in their eyes. He always sees hands on gun holsters, a tenseness in people’s muscles that reveals they’re ready to run like hell should he start to lose it.
Bruce himself makes fun of his “condition” now and then too. I believe it’s how he copes with it. When he tries to forget about and ignore the Other Guy, that’s when he loses control. Bruce never stops thinking about the Hulk, which is probably the source of his anger. To deal with this, he does two things. One, when he’s around people who know about him, he jokes halfheartedly about it. Comments like “They really want to put me in a pressurized metal container?” show this. Secondly, he loses himself in his work, which is another thing Tony can relate to.
But not Tony. Maybe it’s Tony’s own semi-suicidal nature that makes him so nonchalant about even being in the room with Bruce when “the Big Guy” comes out. Maybe it’s Tony’s own scientific mind that wants to observe the Hulk, or maybe it’s just because Tony relates with Bruce. Tony doesn’t have a physical rage monster inside him, and he has trouble “blowing off steam” because he doesn’t want people to know about his insecurities. He puts on more than just the Iron Man mask, and he drinks to drown his pain. Maybe in a way he envies Bruce’s ability to release all the pent up pain and rage.
I mentioned it a few times here, but I’d like to talk about the common interests these guys share. First off, intellectually, they’re on par with each other. It’s not often Tony can blather on in science-speak and have anyone really understand what he’s saying. Especially when he has to explain himself to two men who are unfamiliar with modern times. Bruce, however, can not only understand Tony, (“Finally! Someone who speaks English.”) but respond back to him. I can see these two going to each other for advice on different projects, bouncing ideas off each other.
Bruce and Tony also have a bit of a taste for mischief. When Tony reveals he planted a bug on Fury’s computer and proceeds to hack into S.H.I.E.L.D., Bruce seems more curious and impressed than anything, as opposed to Steve’s appalled reaction. Bruce doesn’t try to stop Tony, rather he is standing over Tony’s shoulder. Tony also exhibits a little of his prankster nature when he zaps Bruce to see if it would provoke him, and rather than getting angry, Bruce just kind of chuckles and continues his work. Bruce also, bitter as he is when he does it, likes to frighten people with the Hulk. As with Natasha when she finds him at the beginning, he covers it with “I wanted to see what you’d do”, but really, who didn’t get a kick out of him making her jump out of her skin? (Or was that just me? XD) And then again in the lab, during the big argument. When Hawkeye attacks the ship and interrupts, Bruce tells everyone “Guess you don’t get to see my trick”. He might hate the Hulk, but he makes the best of it in the only way he knows how. If people are going to be afraid of him anyway, he may as well use it to his advantage.
These two really enjoy one another’s company, you can tell. And not only can they connect on their feelings, mental instabilities and joke-loving nature, but think about it, they’re two of a kind in the Avengers. Bruce avoids everyone as much as he can (including Tony initially, but Tony just followed him anyway), because he hates seeing distrustful and frightened looks. Tony gets bored with the others, particularly Thor and Steve. While he has fun picking on them, Steve in particular, Tony really can’t be himself around them. The arrogant, sarcastic, self-absorbed genius mask I mentioned earlier comes off around Bruce. And Bruce too, can talk about his pain with Tony. The scene where Bruce and Tony discuss Bruce’s ability is really touching to me. Where the two are just emotionally naked before each other. I think this really solidifies their connection.
Alright, moving past all the reasons why I think they could be together, here’s some of the things that show that they might be together (though, truthfully, I doubt the movies will take that route). At the very least, these two become good friends. Moving past all the joking they do with each other, and the tender moment I just mentioned, there are other signs. First off, even the Hulk has picked up on Bruce’s feeling towards Tony. At the end of  the movie when Tony falls back through the portal, who is it that catches him? Hulk. And despite Hulk’s obvious urge to punch Tony after setting him on the ground, he resists (unlike when he and Thor were fighting), and is even the one to wake Tony up. Finally, whose car does Bruce jump into at the end of the movie? ;) Just saying.
If nothing else, nobody can deny that there is a connection between these two men. So let the fangirls have their fun. 8)

Any Requests?
I need to get my muse back and type up some more stuff (Sorry, I'm still on an Avengers kick, so the next one will probably be either Steve/Tony or Loki/Thor.. XD) but if you have a few characters you want to see paired up, let me know ;) The Ask box is open!

Disney Pairing #1: Chick x Lightning
Chick Hicks x Lightning McQueen
Don't like, don't read ;)
Warning: Spoilers from Disney/Pixar's Cars as well as some other Cars media will follow.
---------------
Yeah yeah, I know, pairing up animated cars? Wtf is your problem? Just hush. There are couples in the Carsverse. XD
Let's start with Chick. Chick's been in the racing business a long time, and it doesn't bother him at all to cheat his way to the top. He's in it for the money and the girls, and, most importantly, the win. He's come in second his whole career because of the King, and he's tired of it.
Enter McQueen. What is presumably Lightning's first year on the track, and already he's blowing Chick away, taking Chick’s second-place spot and sticking him in third. Lightning is a cocky rookie who knows how good he is and isn’t about to take advice from anyone. Lightning dreams of becoming a winner and just basking in the glory, the girls, the fame. As we all know, at the start of Cars, he’s not a real nice guy.
Naturally, Lightning’s cocky “I rule” attitude would vex Chick even more. Despite the confidence Chick exhibits in his taunting of Lightning, Chick obviously has some insecurities, and some hostility towards McQueen and their rival King. This is to the point where he causes a huge wreck on the track in the Piston Cup, and then at the tiebreaker, as we all know, wrecks King. It can be assumed that Chick would want to knock Lightning down a peg – on or off the track. And Lightning, as we know, would take on any challenge.
Maybe this is a lot of assumption to go on, but look at the dynamic between these characters. They have such heated, rapid-fire, back-and-forth arguments that you know they each know the other very well and know exactly what buttons to push. And, maybe I’m just a fangirl, but really watch these two sometime, really listen to their exchanges, look at the expressions they exchange. It looks a lot like flirting. Even at the end, at the tiebreaker. Lightning has his head in the clouds thinking about Sally and Radiator Springs, but Chick is trying his best to get under the kid’s skin. Phrases like “Where ya been, McQueen? I was gettin’ kinda lonely..~” make you wonder.
If these two had been together before the events transpiring in Cars, you can bet that it would be a very dysfunctional relationship and, in a human situation, probably a very physical one. It would almost be an extension of their time on the track, battling back and forth for dominance and control. There would probably be a lot of psychological warfare as well, again, like an extension of them on the track.
So what chance does this pairing have at the end of the movie? Well, I think it’s a pretty good one. Chick has finally accomplished his goal and beaten both the King and Lightning. He’s won, and so in his mind, everyone should love him every ounce as much as they ever loved King or Lightning. Yet, for some reason, he is booed off the stage, his fans hate him now. Why? Chick’s insecurities would grow. Chick has feelings of inadequacy, of not being good enough. His father was very tough on him and is the one who taught him that winning is everything. Chick has grown up solidly believing in this idea. Chick would have trouble understanding why this win doesn’t feel the way it should.
Lightning, having formerly been in a similar mindset to Chick, would sympathize. He, like Doc, would want to reach out and help this lost soul who reminds him so much of how he used to be. He might even feel badly about all of the cutting comments he’d thrown at the green car in the past.
In Cars 2 we don’t hear anything about Chick, but we know that McQueen has won the Piston Cup a few more times. We need to assume he’s run into Chick again. This would increase both Chick’s insecurities and Lightning’s pity for Chick. Chick would be at rock bottom. His fans would hate him for what he did to the King, and he would still be trying to figure out why his win didn’t go as planned. He would be very vulnerable. Though both would have to swallow a lot of pride, I like to think that during this time Lightning at least, would attempt to extend a friendship. I also believe, because of Chick’s character, if he was at a low enough point where he could allow himself to accept the offer, that he would latch on tightly. Because of those insecurities and mental instabilities, I believe Chick would be the type to delve headlong into any serious relationship he found himself in. With girls he would probably be a player, but if he could let himself be vulnerable, I don’t think he’d ever let that person go.
------
So yes, a lot of assumptions. Yes, I’m a hopeless fangirl, but think about it for awhile. ;) Makes some sense, right?

Marvel Pairing #3: Wolverine x Rogue
Warning: Spoilers from X-Men and X-2: X-Men United will follow.
Now I'm expecting some serious flaming on this one, but that's fine ;) Personally, I don't ship these two and it does border on pediophilia. I go for Rogue/Bobby or Rogue/Gambit depending on universe. However, I know there are people who do ship them. My cousin and her boyfriend love X-Men. In fact, he has been reading and collecting anything Marvel-related since he was very young (it's become tradition that I always have to get him at least one Marvel-related gift at Christmas XD) and his favorite character is Wolverine. For probably a few months around the time the first X-Men movie came out, the two of them dressed like Rogue and Logan, my cousin even bleached part of her hair for the streaks in Rogue's.
All this to say, people will both hate and appreciate this, so I'm doing it. :P
Despite people's hatred of this couple, I can understand where people are coming from with it. Rogue and Wolverine have a lot in common, and there is definitely a connection between them right from the start.
Take Rogue, a frightened teenager on the run from the world. Petrified of everyone because with a simple kiss, she accidentally sent her boyfriend into a coma. Rogue is alone, afraid and confused. She doesn't understand what is happening to her or what she's going to do. She hitch-hikes across the country not having any idea where she's going.
Enter Logan, a fellow mutant, equally as confused and alone as Rogue. No memory of his past or of who and what he is. Making his living cage fighting, living out of a tiny trailer. Like Rogue, he keeps on the move, just trying to find anything that will make sense of it all. And, despite his lone-wolf nature, he really wants some companionship. Someone to make him feel like he's not alone in the world. And after picking up Rogue, he finds that.
Throughout the first movie their relationship develops. Wolverine develops almost a sense of duty towards Rogue, feeling he needs to protect her from harm. In the end, he goes to the point of risking himself by trying to stop Magneto's machine to save Rogue from harm, and finally giving Rogue his power to heal her, nearly killing himself in the process. Rogue, on the other hand, has an obvious crush on Logan, especially going into X2: X-Men United. She appreciates all he has done for her, and she is one of few who can see past his gruff, animalistic exterior. She knows there's good in him and that he cares more than he can show.
Beyond all of this, we also have their own physical traits to consider. Rogue is unable to connect with anyone for fear of hurting them. In X2 we see the frustration and tension between her and Bobby for not being able to kiss or even hold hands without the barrier of a glove between them. And even though Rogue's power can harm Wolverine, he is much less at risk than most others of being seriously injured by her.
Then we have Wolverine. While his natural mutation isn't so much dangerous, he has that lovely addition of adamantium claws. Wolverine is also permanently shell-shocked. Not only has be been through a number of wars and brutal battles in his past, but he's had his memories tampered with. This makes him susceptible to flashbacks and outbursts that can often be violent. Rogue knows this, and has already survived and learned from one such encounter, when she tried to awake Logan from his nightmare about Stryker, and he stabs her. Anyone else would have perished and Logan would never have forgiven himself, but not Rogue, able to take Logan's power in order to heal herself, saving her life and Logan's sanity.
Also, Rogue can understand the mental aspect of Logan's torment. Logan, because of how long he's lived and having his memory wiped (possibly more than once) has trouble trying to pinpoint who he is, because he has essentially lived many lives (A samurai, a soldier, a mercenary, a genetic experiment, need I go on?). Rogue also has similar mental instabilities. Every time she touches someone, she absorbs not only their physical abilities and mutations, but also bits of their personalities and memories. Though never shown in the movies, this is referenced to by her comment to Logan. "I can still feel him, inside my head. And it's the same with you."
In other X-Men media, we are shown that Rogue can entirely lose herself when she absorbs too much of someone. She can have moments where she cannot determine if she is herself, or one of the people she has absorbed. In one episode of the show X-Men: Evolution this goes to the point where Rogue starts to try and physically become others when she absorbs Mystique's power.
This internal chaos Rogue experiences, and the confusion of trying to siphon out who she is from all the voices and memories and personalities piling up in her head is something she struggles with constantly. She can understand what Logan is experiencing, and in turn he can relate back to her. It is not a stretch to imagine that the two of them could find solace in each other because of this, or that it could draw them together. We find comfort in those who can understand our hardships, these two would feel the same way. These two characters understand each other. Like so many X-Men pairings, they can find common ground in their suffering.

Marvel Pairing #2: Storm x Nightcrawler
Warning, some spoilers from X2: X-Men United will follow. Nothing too important to the plot, but thought I'd tell you ;)
I know, I know, in some of the comics and cartoons, this plain doesn't work, but in watching the live-action movies, I fell in love with this pairing. The dynamic between these two is so strong.
Storm, the bitter, angry character that she is. She still fights for the humans she hates so much, yet she is terrified of the very people she is trying to protect. Storm has experienced humans trying to harness her powers for their own. She has seen how people fear and hate her because of her gifts. She has also seen what she can become if she gives into them. Back in Africa, her powers made her a goddess and a queen of her people, but that's not what Storm wishes to be.
Unlike most mutants, Storm doesn't hate her abilities. She accepts that she is a mutant, and like Professor Xavier taught her to, she uses her powers for good and to help people. The Xavier Institute is the only place in the world where she feels truly safe.
Then we have Kurt Wagner. Poor Nightcrawler who has been hated and misunderstood his entire life. No matter how hard he tries, he can never escape or try to hide his mutation. He found himself forced to live in a circus to be safe from those who would hate and possibly harm him. Yet, as he says himself, "Outside of the circus, people were afraid of me. But I didn't hate them. I pitied them." Kurt's steadfast belief in a forgiving and loving God has gotten him through all the hardships in his life. This in many ways endears him to me, as I have similar beliefs.
Kurt's faith not only helps him survive it actually physically defines him, to the point where he has covered his face and body with angelic symbols. My personal headcanon is that it's how he copes, it's how he survives. He can look at these markings on his skin and feel as though he's not a monster, as though someone, even if it's someone he can't see, cares for him. I believe it's the only thing that lets him live his daily life in a world that has no love for him.
To top off all of Kurt's hardships, he then is captured and tested at Stryker's lab, and forced to attack the president. Now not only is he hated and feared for his looks and his ability, but he's wanted for trying to assassinate the most powerful man in the US.
The amount of fear Kurt has towards people is clearly shown when Storm and Jean come to his church to pick him up. Using his teleportation to make his voice seem to be coming from everywhere at once. Perhaps this was how he kept the church to himself so long. People would likely think it was haunted, or worse, demon possessed, if they actually saw him. And what is the first thing he says to the girls when they catch him? "Please don't kill me". It breaks my heart every time.
Of course eventually they head back to the Institute with him, and he and Storm have their first moment. My favorite exchange is this, "Someone so beautiful should not be so angry..." "Sometimes anger can help you survive." "So can faith."
These two are such polar opposites in attitude when they meet, yet they figure out that actually, they're the same inside. Storm is just as desperate to feel loved and accepted as any mutant, and she finds a certain hope in Kurt. That if someone who's been as abused and hated as him can still feel so compassionate and even sympathetic towards the people who don't understand him, maybe there's hope for her.
Kurt on the other hand, sees Storm as such a beautiful individual who has so much pain just beneath the surface. The same pain he has felt for so long. He knows how he copes, how he is so at peace now, and so he wants to share that with her. He wants to help her make her life bearable as he has been able to do with his own. And throughout the movie they just get closer. Another of my favorite exchanges is the scene at the end, where Storm and Kurt are going to teleport into Cerebro, despite the risk that Kurt may teleport them into a wall (or, realistically if they missed the bridge, that's an awful long fall XD). Storm's simple "I trust you" is so touching. And then when they actually teleport, Kurt embracing her, obviously afraid of harming her, teleporting while reciting the Lord's Prayer.
I just can't not see these two together anymore. At least not the movie versions of them. XD

Kinda already posted this in the description box, but here it is anyway :)
I have a Co-Founder now, Blackthornblosson, and she'll be helping me out. Therefore if you have a couple you'd like to see posted about, let us know through an Ask. :) Please include the characters you're pairing, what series they are from (can be crossovers ;) ) and some information about you think the pairing would work/why you like it. Blackthorn and I may add our own posts regarding out thoughts on the pair as well, and we may even post some pictures (if we can find any).

Thanks, and have a lovely day~

Marvel Pairing #1: Loki x Mystique
Loki x Mystique
Warning: Some Spoilers from X-3: The Last Stand, and X-Men: First Class will follow. You have been warned.
This is one of my personal headcanons, and, albeit, a strange one, but hear me out. Mystique has always been ridiculed, hated and feared because of the way she look. She has always felt obligated to hide her looks and so comes to hate her gifts. The single man who ever liked her for who she was, and truthfully thought her true form was beautiful (Erik/Magneto) is the man she has stuck with for what, roughly 70-ish years? and in doing so sided against the only family she ever knew. However, despite truly finding her beautiful and attractive, Magneto really just uses her more than anything. He never actually loved her. This can be seen at the end of X-3: The Last Stand, when Mystique is injected with "the cure" and changes into a normal human, and Magneto leaves her behind, saying she "was so beautiful before".
Then we have Loki, the Asgardian prince, never loved or accepted by his father or his people because he was different than they were. Hiding his true appearance, feeling like a monster that people wanted to annihilate. Because of who and what he was he was hated, feared and outcasted. He feels he was unloved by his family and chose to side against them.
Both Loki and Mystique have the ability to change their shape, are masters of manipulation, are full of surprises, and - in my personal opinion - both feel unloved, unwanted and misunderstood. Both want revenge on someone (Loki on Thor and Odin, Mystique on humans and later Magneto), both want to harm humanity, both know how and where to stick a knife (metephorical or literal) where it will hurt their enemy the most.
I can see these two finding each other and realizing just how much they have in common. Finding common ground in their anger, their pain, their suffering, their differences. I can see Loki truly believing Mystique is beautiful. I can see Mystique admiring Loki's Ice Giant form. And I can see them going off to wreak havoc on humanity together. XD
-------------
I have yet to hear of anyone else inventing this pairing, but sadly I don't have a fancy name for it like other pairings. Any suggestions? XP Please comment and let me know if so! Also if it already has a name XD
