one thing i like about fortnight is the sort of “sifting in the sand” quality of how the person gets closer to her verse by verse
i wrote this out and then checked up on how ubiquitous sifting in the sand is because it’s something i grew up knowing as a kid that listened to a lot of ella jenkins, but i was so surprised to see so few google search results for it (like literally just one pdf in the actual smithsonian archives?!) so now im unsure its as common a kids call and response -style song/game as i remember it. here are the lyrics:
i also remember a version of it being like a campfire ghost/bloody murder story type thing. the basic idea is that there’s a monster or criminal of sorts getting progressively closer to the speaker as the speaker recounts the story.
and anyway what it has to do with fortnight, it’s just a loose sense of similarity i felt, but the way each verse you get the sense that taylor and the person are physically getting closer and closer in proximity to one another.
now you’re in my backyard, now you’re at my mailbox, now you’re trying to run away, but you can’t run away without touching me, now i can’t run away without touching you
oh oh sorry so the point of this that i was trying to make was this little theme that i see in the song feels so much like what kaylor has been in so many years, slowly getting closer and inevitably closer to one another publicly
anyways, i just want taylor to know that this song, for however gothic the video was, has gone platinum in my house as a fun way of playing red light green light 😌
