Heart Skips- Part Two
The filing cabinet snapped shut sending cold vibrations through the metal structure as Angela finished up her paperwork. Walking back into the main section of the medical wing where she spent the majority of her time busily going about her appointments and research, her glance was met by that of her last appointment of the day, Winston, who stared at her as if she had just eaten the grossest banana in the entire universe. “Is something wrong?” she asked in concern, his expression sending a sudden fear racing through her mind. “No, Dr. Zeigler, It just surprises me that a woman as intelligent as yourself, and fortunate enough to live amongst the golden age of technology would still so heavily rely on hard copies in file cabinets.” Winston sent his bewildered look back towards the office in which the cabinet stood, in all its warn and outdated glory. Angela laughed out loud in slight surprise, “Well I haven’t always been graced with such technology, and besides, I have always found a strange comfort in having a physical copy available.” Winston shrugged and heaved himself off of the examination table, balancing his weight on the front of his knuckles. “Well I will leave you to your duties, my dear friend. I must attend to my own duties and prepare for those returning to us today.” Angela perked up, suddenly very interested, “Oh? Is the mission finished already? When will they be home?” she questioned anxiously. It had been almost two weeks since she had last seen Genji, due to him leaving on a mission shortly after their little… Angela thought for a moment… their little whatever it was that had happened. Then again had anything really happened? “Dr. Ziegler?” Winston poked his head into her field of vision, her mind jumping back to focus. “Yes, sorry Winston. I was just um… preparing myself, you know, for any injuries or damage that I might need to look at when they return.” Winston squinted his eyes at her, reading her expression carefully. “I see. Well, I’d better leave you to it then!” Angela smiled nervously, slightly embarrassed she had let her mind run away from the conversation, but Winston didn’t seem bothered by her unusual lack of focus as he turned and left the room. Taking a deep breath she steadied herself. She wasn’t going to let their little experience distract her again, after all it had been almost two weeks since it happened. Since he had stood so close to her, his hand on her face as they locked eyes, his lips less than an inch away. Even after he had turned to leave, she had felt the warmth from the closeness of his body clinging to the air around her, and then his voice, his deep yet gentle voice saying her name. She had replayed it in her head a thousand times…. No. She had to stayed focused. She was being silly after all, he had done nothing but say her name. Angela rolled her eyes at herself for being so ridiculous, the very memory of being so wrapped up in something so simple and even cheesy for almost two weeks was shocking, even if the sound of his voice saying her name seemed like the first time she had heard the name herself…. Ugh, she was doing it again! She picked up her tablet and pulled up some notes to distract herself, the screen flashing to life. She began reading through the content, waiting for whatever was to come upon the return of her friends from their mission. A couple of hours had passed and she was completely absorbed in her reading, and didn’t even notice the sound of footsteps outside her door. Suddenly there was a harsh knock at the door. Angela jumped, dropping her tablet onto her desk sending the surrounding objects tumbling around, a coffee mug slipping off the desk and crashed to the floor. “Come in!” she hardly had time to say anything before McCree came bolting in, alarmed by the crash he had just heard. “You okay, Doc?” he inquired, noticing the mug laying on the floor, the handle a few inches away from the rest. Angela stopped her expression from sinking when she had seen the man walk in, disappointed it wasn’t who she had desperately wanted to see. “Yes, just startled is all. Now, let’s get started.” Angela went about the checkup quickly and precisely like she had done a thousand times before, sending him on his way only a couple minutes before the next person arrived. She continued the process over and over, clearing each agent and sending them on their way, until finally Genji arrived for his post-mission check up. Angela felt her cheeks flush upon seeing him, his tall and lean figure gliding into the room. “Genji!” she smiled broadly, her heart flinging itself forward as if it were ready to run to him and never come back. “I mean Mr. Shimada. How was your mission?” She patted the examination table, trying hard to look and act professional. A slight grin appeared on his face as he approached her and sat down on the table. “Good, very good. With the usual setbacks, but successful mission either way.” He grinned at her, and she wondered if he realized that she was having more than a little trouble concentrating on his checkup. She smiled sweetly, but quickly turned her attention back to her work. Minutes passed in silence as she finished up the checkup. “You are all patched up!” she cleared her throat and took a step back from him, unsure of what to think. She hadn’t really known what to expect when she saw him, but he seemed to be acting normal, like nothing had happened. And maybe that was true, maybe nothing really had happened. Her face fell in slight disappointment as she thought about how silly she had been. Genji watched her face and noticed the sudden change in her expression. “Is everything alright, Doctor?” he asked, bending his head down to get a better look at her face. Doctor… he had just called her Doctor. “Oh yes, everything is fine.” she replied as she turned back towards her desk. “You seem to be in perfect condition, and are free to go now.” She didn’t face him as she dismissed him, her heart feeling heavy and sick as she stared down at her desk. How could she have been so stupid, letting her heart and imagination fall for him like a little girl. Genji stood, keeping a watchful eye on her. He looked down at the ground, not sure if he should say something or just leave. She had been so excited to see him, but now she was so distant. “Angela, are you alright?” She looked up a bit, but still didn’t turn to face him, unsure how to reply. “Genji, I…” her voice trailed off quietly. She didn’t know what to say or what to do. Angela had always been one to speak her mind, however she wasn’t sure what was worse; rejection or not knowing how he felt about her. “Genji, I know we haven’t really had a chance to talk about what happened during your last check up,” she turned slowly to face him, “…and I honestly don’t know whether anything really did happen, but…” Angela was cut off unexpectedly when her body was suddenly enveloped in warmth as Genji moved against her, his arms wrapping around her waist and pulling her towards him into a soft embrace. He looked down at her, watching the surprise grow across her face. He smiled and gently took her chin up in his hand, tilting her mouth up towards his. “Oh no!” she thought to herself, “It’s happening again!” Angela prepared for his arms to loosen from around her and his closeness to dissipate like before. Instead his grip tightened, and her mind raced as the breath spilled from her lungs. “Angela, what I did before was unfair to you.” His mouth moved closer to her again, this time brushing hers and tickling her senses. “Genji….” she whispered, afraid to move forward into him but not wanting to move back. Softly, he pressed his lips against hers, gently caressing her and pulling her tightly into him. Angela’s eyes widened and her heart beat as if it was her last moment alive before finally melting into his embrace, her arms circling up and around his shoulders, pulling herself towards him. She kissed him sweetly and timidly, and he could feel her shaking in his arms. Slowly, Genji pulled away from her, watching as her eyes flickered open in a daze and her cheeks flushed a beautiful shade of pink. He smiled down towards her, “You see, before my brother …attempted to kill me, I was used to having anything and anyone I wanted.” Angela blinked as her thoughts began to process what he was saying, “But after I recovered, I thought that no one would ever want me again. When I asked you what you thought of me, and you told me about how you thought of me as a person, I didn’t know what to do.” He sighed and his face began to redden. “When I went to kiss you, I felt… scared.” Angela looked at him, a little confused. “Why were you scared?” she questioned, not really understanding. “I was afraid that if i kissed you, you would reject me. You would decide that maybe I wasn’t worth the time and even take back what you said.” Angela looked down slightly, “Genji I would never take back what I said about you, I really meant it!” She smiled up at him tenderly, and leaned up towards him again, “I promise, I’ll never take it back.” Their lips brushed again as they leaned together for another kiss, when there was a small creak by the door. Both of them turned towards the door and saw a very embarrassed Mei, trying her best to silently sneak away. The two separated immediately, faces red with embarrassment having been caught. Mei looked nervously at them, an uneasy and shy smile on her face, “Uh, I’m sorry…. I didn’t mean to… I mean I wasn’t trying….” Angela’s face flushed more, “It’s okay, Mei, really.” She glanced over at Genji, who quickly left the room without another word. “Now then,” Angela said, brushing her hair back and trying hard to gain her professional focus back, “Lets get started shall we.” Genji silently shut the door behind him and had to stop himself from running down the hallway. That had really just happened. He, Genji Shimada, had kissed Angela Ziegler. He had thought about kissing her for so long and it had finally happened, and over what? He just told her what was bothering him in his brief moment of despair, and suddenly she was interested in him. Genji had liked her for quite some time, and tried to impress her almost constantly, but she had been completely oblivious and uninterested. His memory raced back, recalling his numerous attempts at wooing her. Like during training he had convinced his brother to fight him so he could show off his skills, only to hear Lena and Hana making jokes and laughing with Angela about how “Hanzo and Genji still fighting like children”. Which Genji thought was rude, especially since their fights were much more sophisticated than children. On the battlefield Genji would often rush out in front to show her how confident he was, along with how fast and skilled he was, and that almost always ended with him being yelled at to return to the payload or their current objective and away from the center of the fight. He would train and meditate out in the open with Zenyatta, showing her his calm and advanced focus, but most times she just rushed right past, not even glancing up at him. And then all those times she’d passed by and he had given her a quick hello, followed by a manly flex or a skilled balancing act, Angela would simply look up as if she hadn’t noticed him, say hello, and continue on her way. He had played all his best cards, and both human ladies and now more recently omnic ladies usually would have flocked to him. But Angela was different, and she always had been. Not only was she beautiful with her stunning blue eyes, light golden hair, and almost perfect features each complementing the other, but she was also the most intelligent woman he had met or even heard of. Her research and medical expertise had saved thousands upon thousands of lives, his included. Angela was also an avid advocate for peace in any situation, yet she was always out on the front lines of battle working miracles and earning her nickname ‘Mercy’. Yes she was perfect, or as McCree would say “the whole package deal”. Genji turned into his room and laid on his bed, Hanzo looking up from his meditation when his brother practically floated past him. He said something probably sarcastic but Genji didn’t hear him, his mind still stuck in the medical wing thinking about Angela. He felt a sharp jab in his side as Hanzo poked at him with one end of his bow trying to bring his brother back to focus. “Hmm….” Genji half heartedly replied still lost in his own train of thought. “Brother, I thought that all your training with Zenyatta would have allowed you to escape your daydreams, or is it the incense that fogs your mind?” Hanzo jeered. Genji smiled, “I am victorious this time, brother.” Hanzo sighed and rolled his eyes, “You must not be talking about your mission then.” Genji sat up and pushed away the bow at his side, Hanzo smirking at his brothers annoyance. “The mission was also successful, but I was talking about Angela. I finally…” He scratched his head and looked away in embarrassment as his brother curiously waited for him to finish. “I finally kissed her.” Hanzo leaned forward with a mischievous look, “And did she kiss you back?” He taunted. Genji shoved a pillow in his face and pushed him, Hanzo laughing and shoving the pillow back. “Of course she kissed me back you kuso!” Hanzo laughed upon seeing his brothers frustration, “And here I thought you’d never amount to anything!” Genji stood to tackle his brother, when a sharp noise split the air, red lights flashing. Hanzo jumped to his feet grabbing his bow and looking towards his brother. “Intruder! We must go!” Genji and Hanzo bolted out the door and into the empty hallway, weapons at the ready. Ahead, the empty hallway split, one way leading towards the front of the base and the other towards the medical wing, the two men racing towards the front of the base. Suddenly, Genji’s shoulder smashed hard, throwing him against the wall of the seemingly empty corridor. Dazed and confused he looked around unaware of what he had hit, when his eye caught a bright purple flicker he recognized immediately. “Arrrgh, Sombra!” Genji sneered, the purple figure already on her feet. She smiled down at him and pulled a lollipop from her mouth, laughing at his shocked expression. An arrow shot past her head, and Genji loosed his deadly shuriken towards the Talon agent, who easily avoided both attacks. “See you later, Sparrow!” A sudden flash of violet pixels swept her away before Genji had time to attack, his jaw grinding and his fisted clenched. “Where on earth did she come from?” Genji thought out loud, turning and looking around them. He stopped, his eyes fixed and his heart sank as he glanced down the adjoining hallway, the door to the medical wing bent and broken in the hall. Genji sprinted down towards the broken door, “Angela!”

Heart Skips- Part One
Water rippled down the window as rain drops pelted the glass exterior, dew forming on the inside of the seal before racing downwards mirroring the outside droplets. Angela took another sip of her coffee before sliding her finger over the screen in front of her and looking over the content of her notes. “Hmm, I know it's here somewhere…” she thought out loud to herself, her eyes scanning vigorously. For months she had been working on improving her caduceus staff after it had been damaged while on the front lines of battle, and while doing the necessary repairs Angela decided to see if she could give it an extra boost. “Athena, pull up last week's notes on balancing damage boost, please and thank you.” The computer screen flashed, “Yes, Dr. Zeigler” the electronic voice replied as a new set of notes appeared before her. Angela sighed and took another sip of her coffee before returning to her calculations, when suddenly there was a knock at the door. “Oh, uh, come in!” Angela jumped as she hurriedly organized her workstation. The door clicked open and the familiar silhouette of Genji filled the doorway and entered the room. “Mr. Shimada! I apologize for the mess, I must have lost track of the time! Please come in and sit down.” Genji bowed slightly and began walking towards the examination table. “My apologies Doctor, I am early and did not mean to disturb you.” Genji looked curiously over Angela's shoulder to the staff sitting on the desk behind her, not used to seeing it not in action much less taken apart. “I did not take you to be a mechanic Doctor, though with all the skill you possess it does not surprise me.” Angela's face reddened, unsure whether to take Genji’s words as a compliment or not. “Thank you, Mr. Shimada I take pride in every aspect of my medical practices, even if my staff is used amongst violent circumstances. Now, let's get to work here. On a scale of one to ten, how is your pain?” Angela washed her hands and turned to look and Genji who sat quietly on the table. “Mr. Shimada, is everything alright?” She inquired, her eyes brimmed with concern. “Yes, sorry doctor. My pain is… normal, for the most part. Nothing to serious I usure you.” Genji looked away uncomfortably, “my shoulder seems to be bothering me a little.” Angela smiled calmly as she pulled up his file. “Here let me take a look, shall we?” Angela looked closely, her fingers moving along the seam where his flesh joined his bionic parts. Red lined the scar tissue, and swelling pushed up against the cold metallic parts genji called his shoulder. “Hmm, I see why it would be bothering you!” She reached behind her, grabbing a small container and a slim pen like object with a small sphere at the end. Opening the container and dipping a cotton pad in the gel, she gently applied the ointment around the swollen tissue. “Are you experiencing any other pair?” Angela asked, now holding the pen and gliding the sphere over the redness of his flesh. The sphere lit up with a gentle and familiar yellow glow, ribbons of light melting off and absorbing into Genji's shoulder. “Thank you doctor, that is all I needed.” Genji looked the other way while the swelling and redness disappeared, the slow throb dissolving. “Mr. Shimada… Genji?” Angela set down her supplies and walked around to face him, his eyes distant and lost. “Genji, are sure you're alright?” Genji continue looking away and nodded silently. Angela looked over his cyborg form before returning her eyes to what little of his original body remained. “Genji I usure your shoulder is well, though it might still have trouble some days adjusting to such a drastic change. I am so very sorry if it has been so difficult for you.” He looked at her and let out a deep breath. “It shouldn't bother me anymore. I should be used to it by now, especially with all zenyatta has taught me. I thought that I was at peace with myself. Or at least what's left of me.” She saw him shudder in disgust before turning away again. “Did something happen today?” She asked, taking a seat on the stool in front of him. “Not really. I just went to town. But the way people stared, the way children looked on. With all the distrust and violence from the omnic uprisings, and then when the world turned its back on Overwatch I understand why they look at me with terror.” “Genji,” Angela sighed sympathetically and gently placed a hand on his human shoulder. “I cannot begin to understand the pain you must feel. But as hard as it must be, you must understand that they don't know you. How much they trust you or what they think of you doesn't change your ability to protect them. And regardless of what has happened to you, if it means anything at all, know that I trust you. I trust you with my life” Genji's eyes looked up at her for the first time since he came in. “With your life?” He questioned, not sure if she was serious. “Well of course! There isn't any reason I shouldn't, you've looked after me plenty of times in the worst of situations” Angela blushed and looked away suddenly, “in the worst and the best situations.” A surprised looked appeared on his face and he watched as the doctor tried not to let her embarrassment show. “Dr. Zeigler, may I ask you a question?” he sat up a little, curiously looking towards her. She smiled and nodded a little nervous about what suddenly interested him. “What do you think of me?” Angela blinked a couple times and thought carefully as if not sure what to say. “Well I think you are a remarkable agent, with a very developed skill and--” Genji interrupted, taking her by surprise. “No, what do you think of me, not what you think of my abilities.” Angela stopped for a moment, pursing her lips together in thought and shifting her balance on the stool uncomfortably. “Well, um…” she glanced back up at him, his eyes locked intensely on her face reading every bit of uncomfortable panic she displayed. “I think you are… kind. I don't know how to explain it, it is a very distant sort of kind. But you are somehow always there, making sure I'm okay no matter what is going on in your life. I feel that you are a very sweet, selfless person.” Genji continued watching her as she squirmed uneasily in reaction to her own words. “You think of me as a sweet person? Not a sweet cyborg?” Angela looked up at him, “Oh Genji of course I think of you as a person! Especially when it comes to how you treat me, and how you feel! Your feelings and emotions are yours, not part of some program or protocol.” Genji thought carefully before standing and moving towards the stool the woman sat on in front of him, catching her off guard with his sudden movement. Gently he took her chin in his mechanical hand and tilted her head up towards his face. Angela's eyes widened in shock and anticipation and her cheeks flushed when she felt the closeness of his face, the warmth of his lips less than an inch away from hers. Genji slowly released his gentle grip on her chin and moved away from her, turning his back and heading for the door. “Genji….” Angela said quietly not sure what had just happened. The man stopped and looked back over his shoulder towards her, “Why do you… what was the purpose….” She trailed off not really sure what to ask. Smiling slightly he turned to face her once more, “To see if you were telling the truth. Thank you for your help… Angela.” Genji turned and left the room as silently as he came, leaving her flustered and confused in her own thoughts. Her name… he had called her by her first name. Her heart skipped a beat as she replayed the sound of his voice articulating her name over and over again. Angela felt out of breath and slightly dizzy as she reflected on what had just happened. “What was that all about? Why do I feel so… so vulnerable.” She wondered out loud to herself, her hands shaking and her face hot. Slowly rising to her feet and making sure not to lose her balance, Angela walked back towards her desk and began moving the parts of her staff around, not paying attention to what or where she put them. How was she supposed to get any work done now, when all she could think about was Genji? His soft touch and warm expression, his gentle pale green eyes and the closeness of his face…. “No,” she thought, “I have work to do, and besides I must be reading more into this than I should. After all, he couldn't possibly….” She stopped, her heart and breath halting almost immediately. “Could Genji like me?”
